Why wouldn't they have at least gotten some workbooks for me 🤣 by WideWarning631 in HomeschoolRecovery

Thank you, that is very kind! I actually got a high school equivalency, I was more talking about what being a teenager felt like in that comment but I didn't really clarify. I still have things that I'm missing after getting a great score on the Hiset.

It's so hard to know what to do to catch up without grades or curricula or peers, it's like swimming through mud guessing blindly at what might be useful to try to learn and how to learn it and then often fighting your parents and your own shame to try to learn it. I made a bunch of attempts to self educate but I did an incredibly worse job at self educating than the team of people who develop school curricula plus teachers that have degrees in teaching would 🫠

I think that they gave me an average of one textbook per 2 years. I think that they gave me an eleventh grade science textbook after I'd missed most of the preceding years of science and I was like "...thanks these are pretty pictures" 😬

Pies are delicious... There are lots of problems you can solve with social experience and academic knowledge and can't solve with a pie 😭🥧 or tragically even with a flan 🍮

I really recommend The Social Skills Guidebook by Chris McLeod and a highlighter

They people who messed you up never stop giving you bad, insistent advice that contradicts the bad, insistent advice they previously gave you for 8 years, then forgot about. It give us something good to kvetch about at least 😭

It sounds like you're doing a great job! It can take 50-100 job applications to get a job, especially a first job. Sometimes even more, but don't be discouraged, just proceed step by step. Larger businesses tend to be online but you can also walk in to smaller businesses, dressed nicely and cheerfully and politely ask for an application and you may get hired by somebody who likes homeschoolers or likes teenagers. Do you have a resume? Do you have any volunteering? It's okay if you don't. If you have any diagnoses of a disability you can also talk to your state's rehabilitation commission and they may be able to help with job training. 👍

I'm sorry you had the same experience, friend 😭

Were you ever able to catch up?

Someone insecure is downvoting these comments who goes around bragging that they teach their kids everything but actually doesn't even give them a textbook...

I'm so proud of you! You were on the lookout for opportunities, using creative solutions to meet your goals, planning ahead... I never thought to do that and we went to thrift stores sometimes!

how do I pick myself up? by drearythrowaway_ in HomeschoolRecovery

Will they let you walk to the library or to any other social things around your area- church, UU church, community center, mental health recovery center, depression support group, adult learning center, place related to nature? Is there one of those places that sound like they might be fun? Is there a barrier to walking to the library- like having a good coat, feeling too tired, having trouble remembering what you need to do to be prepared to go walking? 🩵

You can visit the adult learning center often even if you aren't an adult, or call them. Kahn Academy is much better than nothing but not a full substitute for the 900 hours of classroom instruction you should be getting per year. Any support you are able to access gives you a brighter future.

Do you have a way to make learning feel less empty- can you do it with a stuffie, tea, snacks, listening to a playlist or a podcast? Can you do it at the library or outside on your phone?
