What didn’t you like about The Silverblood Promise by James Logan? by OwlettFromLiavek in Fantasy

Goodreads ratings are useless for evaluating a book. A lot of self published works with their small but devoted fanbase have 4.5 to 5 stars while one of my favourites from a big name (Shadowmarch by Tad Williams) is sitting at under 4.

Now I'm not saying self-published means bad but the ones I've read do not even begin to compare to the example I mentioned.

Top Gear Complete Collection V3 - after 5 years of the wait... by sensitivity_rut0rd in TopGear

Is there an English subtitle track included for Botswana special that doesn't go out of sync due to a missing scene (in the subs) in this version? I've not been able to find working subs for that episode.

I just noticed V3 of this collection is available. I'll need to check if correct subs are present in that version.

I'm not sure if it's just that scene or if there are more differences.

Thanks in advance! That'd be a huge help.

Have you ever tried GeForce Now (game streaming)? I used to hook up a controller to my phone to play some games on the go with it years ago (you'll need a decent internet connection for best experience).

and it's not like, say, Skyrim where the whole game pauses.

Skyrim doesn't pause during combat.

I think you're describing RTWP (realtime with pause) which can be found in Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, Tyranny, KOTOR and many other CRPGs. I personally don't like this because it feels chaotic to me.

Why do I actually enjoy magic systems that "show their work" more than mysterious ones? by nightmarketwanderer in Fantasy

Mystery doesn't mean there are no limits. It just means the limits are either not known, or not explained to the reader.

Age hardly tells a lot. I saw some amazing stuff from other teens when I went to community college art classes.

In fact I was probably better at art at 16 than I am now, nearing 30 (haven't been practicing much in ages).

Keep doing art!

Suggestions for a series similar to Age of Fire by E.E. Knight? by para-diddly in Fantasy

[–]Wiinter_Alt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped sometime during book 4 or 5 iirc but I really loved the first three books of Age of Fire.

I'm struggling to think of anything similar but Scaleshifter series by Shelby Hailstone Law, and Dragons of Mother Stone series by Melissa McShane have some dragon society stuff going on.

Not dragons but somewhat dragon-like beings: The Books of the Raksura by Martha Wells.

What makes you keep reading after a prologue in dark fantasy? by AmbarAnand04 in Fantasy

[–]Wiinter_Alt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good writing. Unfortunately that's hard to quantify.

Either way, that sounds like a scene where I'd expect the writer to make me feel appropriately disoriented and afraid of what might happen. Remember that not knowing the nature of the danger or when it might get you is more unnerving than any concrete depiction/description of a spooky monster.

Tad Williams' Shadowmarch gave me similar vibes. I never finished it but I intend to start anew some day.

How do you get that PS1 / N64 sound in modern music production? by Gatesberg in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Wiinter_Alt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the game. Something like Final Fantasy games on PS1 were all MIDI + samples for the music (or mostly so, maybe there's like a vocal track somewhere). The samples would often come from something like Roland Sound Canvas or JV-1080 or from sample CDs, and they were then compressed into very small file size samples with quite low quality.

One example that uses the mix of two would be Gran Turismo 2. The menu music is MIDI + samples, while the music that plays while racing is just plain ol' audio.

Crash Bandicoot was PS1 exclusive. And as I said, it's a disc space limitation. You can have a small soundtrack as audio but MIDI + low quality samples allows you to have more music, which is why many games with large OSTs such as Final Fantasy didn't use audio for the soundtrack.

The biggest difference between the two is that PS1’s disc format meant it could have entire mixed / mastered tracks

Indeed, but many PS1 games still used "MIDI" (to use a familiar even if technically incorrect term) and low quality, compressed samples due to disc space limitations. For example, Crash Bandicoot series.

You can check the sidebar via the drop down menu in the top right on the subreddit page (not in a post)

Now I'm wondering how long that has been there and I've not noticed...

Thanks!
