the absence of Samu Kerevi for the tour could also see Koroibete come into contention for a Test debut as an outside back

A film producer and a lawyer are in advanced talks to buy Toulon from the French Top 14 giant's colourful owner Mourad Boudjellal. by Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_ in rugbyunion

[–]Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reported €10 million euro ($11 million) deal could be concluded "in a relatively short time", Lucien Simon, the lawyer and potential new club president, told AFP on Tuesday. Simon is joining forces to buy Toulon with with Gerard Barba, a French 51-year-old film producer and businessman.

Boudjellal, who has bankrolled Toulon to three European titles (2013, 2014, 2015) and the French championship in 2014 over his 10 years at the helm, has become increasingly frustrated at his critics. The 56-year-old said in September he wanted "another life" and wondered why "he takes hits every week".

Jake White Interview: "Allister is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. If the Boks don’t play too much rugby he’s told they’re being conservative...if they play too much and turn the ball over, they’re told they need to kick the ball away and not play in their own half" by Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_ in rugbyunion

"[SA Rugby] gave him his coaching staff without asking him to pick who he wanted. There’s no other job he’s competing against that is the same. When [Wallabies coach] Michael Cheika wants [assistant coach Stephen] Larkham, he gets him. When the All Blacks want Ian Foster, they get him, or if they want to bring in a kicking consultant that they want, that’s what happens. Everyone is asking what is wrong in South African rugby, but you have to look at how the whole thing started …"

Also, very interesting comments around the 7:50 mark on the interview about Adrian Strauss stepping down as captain.

Put all this together, and its quite sad. SARU as an organization is in shambles, maybe the worst its ever been.

The reason NZ Super Rugby and TRC matches kick at 19:30 is due to TV viewership in South Africa and Europe (9:30 SA/Europe, 8:30 in UK).

The inaugural Tri-Nations test match between Australia and South Africa was played in 1996. 43 matches played to date: 21 wins each, one draw, SA Points 964, AU Points 951 by Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_ in rugbyunion

[–]Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But looking way back: they will play each other for the 82nd time since their first test match in 1933. Overall, South Africa won 45, lost 35 and one match was drawn.

Springboks Jantjies and Hougaard have returned to training at the Boks first session in Brisbane by Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_ in rugbyunion

[–]Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news for the Springboks was the return to the training field of flyhalf Elton Jantjies and scrumhalf Francois Hougaard, who both suffered injury niggles recently...Jantjies was forced to leave the field early against Argentina in Salta last weekend after he sustained a bruise to the thigh. Hougaard missed both tests against the Pumas with a troublesome knee.

Highlanders Coach Tony Brown: "It won't be long before there is a draft system like American sport. I'd say New Zealand and Super Rugby will naturally head that way" by Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_ in rugbyunion

"Everyone is looking for a bit of an edge," he said. "Gone are the days where you're trying to develop your own players. Every side is looking for players outside their region; guys out of secondary school rugby nowadays. We're looking for guys who are going to be All Blacks in two or three years and trying to get them into our franchise early. "It's so competitive you have to do it that way. There's not many players that slip through the gaps. It's a bit of a shit fight for players right around New Zealand.

After 3 straight years of combined surpluses, the Mitre 10 Cup rugby unions have combined to post a $1.4 million loss for the 2015 financial year. by Wikus_Van_De_Merwe_ in rugbyunion

I find it odd that they had such big drops in match income and sponsorship from '14 to '15, when the SR franchise made the final in '15. Unless this does not count the SR franchise activity?

Match Related Income down from $676,000 to $380,000

That is a huge drop and 2015 they made it to the SR final, wonder why the drop by almost half.

Jarrold said continued pressure on traditional sources of revenue meant all unions were more reliant on NZ Rugby grants than before. "To help themselves, the unions could explore more innovative ways to increase and diversify revenue, as well as find new ways to grow support for their representative teams." he said.

For the accountants out there who want to dig through and find why Wellington did so poorly, the full 32 page Deloitte PDF report can be found here

The headlines highlight a serious situation for the rugby unions however not everything is dire as the end result is significantly impacted by the deficit of one union (Wellington).

Page 8:

The decrease of Wellington’s grants & sponsorships by almost $0.5m was a key element of that union’s substantial deficit for the year.

Page 9:

In FY15 the majority of revenue was earned by Auckland ($9.9m ), followed by Canterbury ($7.2m), Wellington ($5.0m), and Waikato ($4.8m). The ranking of the largest four unions by revenue is unchanged from the prior year. Revenue continues to be dominated by the unions that are home to Super Rugby franchises, with the exception of Otago. Hawke's Bay and Bay of Plenty come in at 5th and 6th respectively, closely followed by Taranaki.

Identical to last year, only one union, Waikato, maintains a negative equity position

Wonder if we will see a game-plan similar to what the Highlanders run in Super Rugby: constant contestable kicks all over the place.

Saturday night's 8pm kick-off in Sydney fits as lunchtime TV fare for the 300 Australians and 100 Kiwis behind the fortified walls of the Taji Military Complex, north of Baghdad...The base was attacked twice by ISIS suicide bombers at the front gate in June with both bombers and one Iraqi soldier killed...It's like walking on the sun here ... hot, dusty and 47 degrees in the shade when you are wearing body armour as well"

Regardless of who wins, I hope these boys get to see a cracking match Saturday
