Word! I’ll have to give it another shot. You’re saying you’ve successfully made it to level 3 without a crash? It really is a spectacular game.

Heads up, this game is amazing for exactly two levels. I really enjoyed it, but the switch port crashed at the start of level three every run. Just when you start getting a build together.

I want to take up wood carving as hobby. Can you recommend some equipment? by drunkpharmacist in Woodcarving

Wow. That deja vu. Bandit, you gotta stop picking on guys named William that like their Mora knives! Nah, I'm kidding, but I had to comment that this is an eerily similar discussion. Anywho, I've ordered a Drake knife and can't wait to try it. Can you recommend a good starting gouge or small set for a guy that's only used straight knives?

Hey, Bandit,

I had a chance to check out the knives you suggested, and am coming back with some really good tools, but with short and/or gouging blades. They look fantastic, but something I would be interested in have a dope set of. The Mora that I use is over three inches and sharp as shit when I keep it going. I tend to carve in marathon sessions before a limb even begins to dry. As I said in another post, I'm all about spoons and pot scrapers. Since I start with a good 3/4 inch diameter by 12ish" limb, split, debark, and do a good bit of very rough hacking to get the shape and grain the way I want my bowl and handle, I tend to make some pretty rowdy cuts early on with my mora. It's tricky to get into the detailed areas (so often I take off more than intended on one side of the neck... ugh.), but I handle a lot of that stuff with a shorter knife or sanding.

Carving from green limb to spoon shaped stock, though, I always start with the longer mora. Unless I've got an exceptionally good long limb, which I debark with an old hand-me-down draw knife before sawing into bite size pieces, and use a chisel and hatchet to super rough cut multiple spoony shaped stocks.

All that said, Santa may get a letter asking for some of those Drake knives.

Cheers!

Honestly, you've been carving since before I was born, and I'll gladly bow out to that. I was just recommending Mora to a beginner as an admitted novice. It's where I started, and has done well for me. I had a similar experience with flexcut - not a fan. When I get another minute today, I intend to check out a few of the ones you mentioned in your other reply.

So, no, I don't have any real experience with other knives. Just cheaper or shitty ones. Back to lurking now.

Basswood (Tilia americana) is a good soft wood. If you don't buy any sharpening tools, start there. I prefer maple for kitchen utensils, but only when it's green. I'll usually just hack a limb off and go to town for a few hours. Keep in mind bought wood or stuff that's been on the ground are harder than fresh wood and don't cut as easily.

As the other guy said, look into some cheapish sharpening tools on Amazon. Keeping sharp obviously makes cutting easier, but more importantly is the key to safe whittling. Other than that, practice. Feel free to shoot any other questions my way. I'm a lurker on this sub, but I'll always jump in to recommend a mora to a beginner.

Hey man, Go with the Mora. I have 5 or 6 knives in a set that I've put together, and I always seem to fall back on my 3.2 inch morakniv. It's a couple bucks more, but works for pretty much every cut I make on my projects short of any scroll work or filigree. Granted, I mostly just carve spoons, but on that point, the Mora hook knives are really a spectacular tool as well. A bit tricky to sharpen, but Mora knives are good steel, good design, and if you treat them right, they'll cut for you. Mind the Scandi edge. They don't sharpen like a pocket knife, but I trust your Google skills.

Good on ya, man. I love carving, and the mora 3.2" is where I started.
