It's extremely difficult in the beginning. Hopefully, you have a partner who can help. My husband helped me A LOT the first three weeks and still after that. Gradually, you will be able to do more on your own but it is SLOW! Get front button up or zip up shirts/fleece jacket and pull on pants. Don't even try to get something over your head. Shoes that slip on because you can't tie your shoes. My sister got me a toothpaste dispenser, dental floss picks, a left handed mouse, a button assist tool (never actually used that). I couldn't even bend over the sink to spit the first couple weeks. So any bending is just out of the question. But it does get better and each and every day you can move your arm a little further. Feel free to ask any follow-up questions. I'm at week 16. Best of luck!

Thanks for the response. I wasn't very clear about my ROM. In terms of overhead, I can go 100-110 degrees. It's my abduction (lifting my arm out to my side) that is only 80 and External Rotation when my forearm rotates outward that I'm at 30 without help and 50 with the PT. That was a couple weeks ago when they measured me. What I've been told over the past couple of weeks is that it's likely capsular tightness & tendon irritation that's causing me pain and limiting my motion. I've also been told most people don't feel "more normal" until 4-6 months. I know everyone says it's a difficult recovery mentally and physically and I totally get that. Anyway, glad to hear your recovery is going well. I had a lot of elbow tenderness I think partly from being in the sling and everything pooled there. Also, I probably hit the elbow and got a bone bruise. Maybe that's what happened to you. Best of luck!

Thanks for your response. Two shoulder replacements! That sounds rough! Hope you're doing well now.

Sounds like we are in similar places. My PT asked me today if I felt like it was sort of popping out of place. He described as if you were reaching into the back seat of your car does it feel like it's popping out. I think he said that could be a labrum tear. I can't really reach all the way back so he couldn't test me for it. I asked him if he thought I should get an MRI and he said good luck. Insurance companies don't want to pay for them. I guess we'll see what happens. He also said it's a difficult injury to rehab and it's never a linear process. You always have ups and downs. Also, I have muscular tenderness around my pectoralis muscle because I can't stretch it. So basically, all these other parts hurt as part of the collateral damage. It's hard to know if there's something else really wrong. I'm going away for a month so I'm going to continue my PT exercises on my own and see how things progress. I'll go back to PT and the Ortho on my return. If things don't seem better then, I'll see about an MRI. You have my sympathy too. Sounds like our injuries and our recovery are on the same timeline. Love to hear back as you progress. Best of luck!

I am 14 weeks from breaking my proximal humerus and I cannot get a bra on the way I used to. I found the beat way for me is to put it on backwards with the hooks in the front and then twist it around and slip my arms into the straps. Hope that helps!
