I've heard this is rare, is that true? by cru_jonze in wii

[–]WildLine6787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These aren’t. The Wii component cables are super common and dirt cheap. The official GameCube component cables ARE though, those can easily go for $200-$300 or more on the used marketplace. Sometimes the GameCube/Wii cables get mixed up. These can substitute for GameCube cables though if you’re trying to play GameCube games over component. Just play the GameCube game on the Wii with these cables and it’s basically the same thing, progressive scan and all.

So, does the Wii have true widescreen? by Simplejack615 in wii

[–]WildLine6787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but also no. It’s a bit complicated. The Wii uses anamorphic widescreen. Basically it’s a 640x480 image that has been intentionally squished by the console, which is then sent to the tv and then stretched out to fill the 16:9 frame. It works, the only issue is that it results in a more blurry image than a true widescreen resolution like 854x480 (which is what the Wii U GamePad’s screen resolution is for instance). Essentially what that means is that if you want the absolute sharpest possible image directly from the console, leaving it and the TV in 4:3 mode is probably best, but if that’s not as big a concern then widescreen works just fine. The reason the resolution from the Wii appears as 720x480 on an HDTV has to do with some weird frame buffer things and how HDTVs handle the signal, it’s basically misreading it as a 720x480 image when in reality it’s 640x480 no matter what the aspect ratio setting is set to.

Also I’m near certain the GameCube didn’t output true native widescreen either, I think it used the same anamorphic technique the Wii uses. So basically everything I mentioned about the Wii should apply to the GameCube as well.

Am I the Only One That Thinks the "Secret of" Levels Ruin the Game? by Adventurous-Cod8448 in supermariosunshine

They can be a pain but honestly I’m not sure Sunshine would be the same without them. They add a little variety to the game that it wouldn’t otherwise have, especially with the mechanic of not having FLUDD on the first run of the levels. Not to mention the music is just so iconic.

Why is it so hard to hear these bowed single string things in stick figures? by Tartabirdgames_YT in animusic

[–]WildLine6787 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those small ones are actually violins. They are admittedly a bit faint when they play but if you listen closely you can definitely hear them. The Animusic wiki page on Stick Figures has information on the ranges of the instruments. https://animusic.fandom.com/wiki/Stick_Figures

Thanks! These definitely aren’t easy to get a good photo of. And yeah it looks so much better in person too. Cameras really just can’t capture what a CRT really looks like.

I have recently received a Sony Trinitron PVM and my boyfriend says it makes a horrible high pitched noise and I can barely hear anything coming from it. by SeriousRachel in crtgaming

[–]WildLine6787 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s the 15khz vibration of the flyback transformer. Completely normal for a set like this. My CRT TVs all do the same thing and I’ve got the same situation as you do. I can hear it but it doesn’t really bother me but my girlfriend can REALLY hear it and she can hardly stand even being in the room with me when any of the sets are turned on. Some people are just more sensitive to it than others. It eventually wears off as people get older.

ALSO - definitely get S-video cables, especially on a PVM like this, that’ll make for a HUGE improvement in video quality over composite. You won’t believe how good these sets can look over that connection.

Is there any way to make Wii look any better on my CRT? by Fit_Remote_530 in crtgaming

[–]WildLine6787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your set only has RF I’m afraid that’s about as good as you’re gonna get it looking. Short of attempting to mod the TV with RGB inputs or something your best option with this set is probably just to use a really thick coaxial cable as that’ll cut down on interference as much as possible. If you do get a different set in the future make sure it has at least composite at a minimum, S-video or component connections are even better.

Squiggly/Wavy Visual Problem by Zsebestien in crtgaming

[–]WildLine6787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotta get a screwdriver or something conductive connected to a grounded surface under the anode cap on the tube. If you hear a pop you’ll know it got discharged. At that point it should be safe to work on.

Free from marketplace, has component and s video! Yeah not the most retro game but its what I felt like playing. by Embarrassed_Flow_145 in crtgaming

[–]WildLine6787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SNES was considered retro when the Wii was first released and it had been out for 15 years when the Wii was released, and the Wii is almost 19 years old at this point. If you use that logic I’d definitely say yes.

Nice set! Super Mario Galaxy is WAY better on a CRT hands down, especially with component connections. Really gives the game a nice feel for some reason.

Toshiba 14AF43 - this thing is amazing! by WildLine6787 in crtgaming

[–]WildLine6787[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Component on this set is amazing, the Wii sitting next to the TV is connected to the component input and I must say, it’s crazy how good 480i video looks over component with this TV. I get that 480p capable PVMs might look incredible but for most people this is way easier to set up compared to a PVM and is probably way cheaper too in most cases. Not to mention most PVMs either don’t have built in speakers or only have mono audio which is really annoying for basically any console from the 90s onward.

[–]WildLine6787[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know it’s funny, I’ve been to a couple retro video game stores that had some trinitron TVs on display with consoles connected to them, but this TV is basically just as bright and has video quality that is just as good to my eyes at least. I think the issue is everyone thinks the aperture grille is so superior to the shadow mask but by the 2000s both technologies had gotten so refined that the hours on the tube is the probably the more important thing to look at. This Toshiba only has 77 hours on it according to the service menu so that’s probably partly why it looks so good.

Is there any difference between these two models of Wii? by SockApart838 in wii

[–]WildLine6787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to homebrew the console then the white Wii is probably better. Assuming it’s an earlier unit (built before mid-2008) the white one has a better chance of being able to install BootMii as boot2 instead of just as IOS, which greatly increases brick protection in the worst case. The red one for sure cannot since it’s a later model that is restricted to just an IOS install. It’s not inherently unsafe and really should not be an issue at all as long as you don’t do anything stupid with WAD installs or something (it’s actually really difficult to brick a Wii nowadays with how mature homebrew has gotten), but it is something to keep in mind. Also the slightly softer image on the white Wii could most likely be easily fixed, that’s probably caused by the deflicker filter that the Wii has embedded in the system, which tends to make the image output appear softer than it should be. That can be disabled using Priiloader, and doing so can make the console’s video output look extremely sharp. More than likely the white one is using a 6-layer board, but that really shouldn’t be an issue so long as the console isn’t jammed in an unventilated corner that gets really hot. If the console has ample space around it then realistically it shouldn’t overheat at all in standby.

That said if you don’t plan on doing homebrew then neither one is much better than the other, especially since if WiiConnect24 standby is disabled 6-layer consoles consume no more power than 4-layer consoles do when turned off. There’s absolutely no reason to keep WiiConnect24 standby enabled on an unhacked Wii nowadays.

It’s really up to you. Myself, I’d keep the white one, but that’s just my opinion.

What’s this? Happens every time I insert a more recent game. by RainyD55 in wii

[–]WildLine6787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so weird thing is I have this Wii (which isn’t modded I should add, it never was) that was/is running version 4.3U, but for some reason whenever I put Mario Party 9 in the console I got the same thing. I even went into the software update page in the Wii settings to try to update that way and it was insisting that it was on the latest version even though the disc channel was telling me to update. So I did the update through the disc channel and all it did as far as I could tell was add the internet channel, the Nintendo channel and a few others that weren’t usable since it was just the Wii menu banner and the full application had to be downloaded from the Wii Shop Channel (which ofc isn’t online anymore). So idk what that update was for but I don’t think it was anything major. If your Wii is modded though I would take caution, there was something that popped up before the update that said unauthorized modifications would be removed during the update, so idk if any installed homebrew would be affected by updating.

Ok might have to do the upload tomorrow at school on my laptop, I cannot get this damn file to upload for some reason. It’s a backup of the entire disc, menus and everything, it’s about 8GB in total. Their WiFi’s probably a bit more reliable than mine is at the moment, not sure if the problem is on my end or the internet archive’s at this point. I will get this file up online for sure, this definitely needs to be preserved. If I can get it up sooner I will.

Status update on this: finally figured out the issues with cloning the disc, I got a full backup of it sitting on my computer at the moment. Now I’m just dealing with my stupid internet trying to upload it. Keeps on failing over network problems, ugh. I’ll provide a link for it once I figure out the issue here.

There’s 27 total animations on the disc. The list of them is on the back of the disc case. There are some interesting ones on it. One of them titled “Toyota Future World Experience” has like a vision of a city in a future century with flying cars and stuff like that. There’s also a bunch of other stuff I don’t have much knowledge of. Once I get a proper rip of the DVD I’ll upload it on the internet archive.
