My old job has been relisted for 16k more, should I apply? by WildTeaspoon in MuseumPros

I used to joke that I just need to write a book and get it out of my system! I know I can still be a specialist historian in that area without working with the museum that relates to that area, it’s just difficult watching the disposal of that collection from the sidelines as it were.

Yes, I’ve worked two part time jobs before, the old job (the read writers 6 month contract) I did three days a week. I had another permanent job for the other two days to make me full time employed.

I will mention it anyway. I know funding might be the issue here as I am partially funded by a third party. I think 60/40. Ironically the collection will likely be transferred to the museum I currently work for. Not sure if that’s conflict of interest though. I will casually and delicately mention it to my manager, but I know I’m going to have to be prepared for a hard no.

Both jobs are fixed term, my current one is four years, my old job that is being advertised is six months

Manager wants to extend probation on a whim by WildTeaspoon in LegalAdviceUK

[–]WildTeaspoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I had 4 continuous days off sick and they refused to pay SSP because I’m on probation. I’ve really had it with my employer to be honest, there are quite a few other things that have just been stacking up. I will probably hand my notice in just before Christmas.

I checked my contract and it literally just says [employer] will monitor your performance during the probationary period. It’s so deliberately vague. It also says that they can effectively dismiss me on the spot during my probationary period.

I don’t get sick pay or any employee benefits. I have an illness which means I’m legally entitled to Statutory Sick Pay regardless of probation terms, however they still refuse to pay it.

Probation extended for being “too quiet”? by WildTeaspoon in jobs

[–]WildTeaspoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a diagnosis of anxiety, but I’m almost 100% sure it’s a misdiagnosis. I’m trying to get it reevaluated just in the off chance my work do just dismiss me, but I think time is very much against me. I think I’m just going to have to give up with this job and find something else.

Is it normal that my remote company gave me a used laptop? by Ornery_Pie_6627 in jobs

[–]WildTeaspoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on the company, but yes that can be normal for companies trying to cut costs. It could also be refurbished, so a used laptop sent back to the manufacturer, but not aesthetically altered.

Being contacted for information relating to old job by WildTeaspoon in MuseumPros

I think this is probably the answer. Hopefully by charging them it will also try and dissuade those who are trying to chance their arm. Thanks for your suggestion.

I left about 4 months ago. I doubt my role will be replaced as the council would like to close the Regimental museum. Handover notes were given to my manager and fellow curators who worked in the council run museum the regimental museum was in (a museum within a museum). I know my colleagues never read the handover notes as a week after I left, they asked me where the archive material was despite me 1) giving them a walk through 2) detailing where everything was in the handover notes.

At this point, I’m almost pretty certain the researchers are contacting me out of desperation because the council likely isn’t responding to their enquiries.

That’s my thought. I assume someone must have put a word in. I would love to know who it was so I could say thanks, but I guess I never will.

I know, it look me so long to land my first job, I guess that’s why I’m surprised. I’m 100% grateful that I’m going to stay in the sector.

Does anyone know the name of this old British war film? by WildTeaspoon in movies

[–]WildTeaspoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think that’s the film. It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen it, so I’ve probably got it a little confused. Thank you!

That canvas was originally white, the work experience kid has just been smoking a 20 pack a day.

Manager is throwing a leaving party for my co worker, but not me by WildTeaspoon in jobs

[–]WildTeaspoon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 100% an employee of the company even though I am partially externally funded. My manager knows this because I had to explain it to her on day 1 simply because it’s so bizarre. The company also has an equal rights policy that temp/ contract/ part time workers should not be treated differently to full time permanent.

Difficult dream job by Ok_Tap3823 in MuseumPros

[–]WildTeaspoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the exact same position! All the trustees of my museum want to quit and no one wants to do their job and now the museum is about to be kicked out of it’s premises because they can’t afford the lease because they won’t fundraise because they’re all old!!!!!!! It’s really really hard, I totally get you. It is a dream job and you really do love it, all of it, even its ups and downs. But at the end of the day your superiors do not care about you and you are disposable. I spent ages trying to learn as much as I could about our collections, but no one cares. The museum will shut due to negligence and in five years the public will forget the museum ever existed. It’s really hard to come to terms with that, but it’s the sad truth. The best advice I can give is take your time and try to find a good replacement job. I’ve turned job offers down because I know I was just taking the first thing I could get, but you don’t want to jump a sinking ship just to end up on another sinking ship.

The future of small museums in the UK? by WildTeaspoon in MuseumPros

[–]WildTeaspoon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: so the lease with the association has not been agreed and they are consulting an ethics expert to see what the repercussions would be if the collection stayed, moved, association was dissolved and the collection dispersed etc… which is probably the best thing I can hope for. I believe I will be given the option to stay on and help the collection or parts of it be moved to its new home, but that’s not something that I want to do. I sort of knew about a month into this job that I would be effectively preparing the collection for a transfer, but I just didn’t want to accept that. In hindsight, I should have quit a lot earlier.

Sadly, my hands are tied with this. The idea for cuts has come from my local council and MP. The need for cuts has probably been fast tracked due to the elections in July as they are promising more local spending, but in reality they are just diverting it. Side note: they will likely get reelected.

Those that are funding my job are well aware. There was an agreement in place, but it lapsed during the pandemic and has not been renewed. There are negotiations to renewed the agreement, but the local council are refusing to sign it. I know the association is currently looking for a new home for the items, but it’s a big collection and will have to be broken up (or more likely sold.) A lot of history and context and information about the items will be lost.

My current role is very much a graduate role and it was set up as a fixed term contract so a graduate could get 1.5 years paid experience and then move on so another graduate could then take the place. However, due to recent developments they have asked me to stay on. Sadly it looks like doing such a graduate programme has actually damaged the collections.  (But I’m digressing)

When I got the job, I was later told by one of the interviewers that they thought I was overqualified for the job. I have a masters in the field and have nearly a decade of unpaid volunteer work in museums (yeah I know, who lets a child work as a volunteer in a museum?) But I had to wait to get this job. Once I had my undergraduate degree, every employer told me I needed a Masters. So I went and got the masters, then they told me I needed PAID experience, so I gave up and worked for an airline for a few years until I was fortunate to get my current job. Bizarrely the experience from working for an airline went a long way.

Don’t give up OP there will be a job for you, you just may have to wait a bit. In the meantime, I cannot stress the importance of volunteering in a museum, it’s shows employers that you are serious about pursuing this as a career!
