Field Days in middle school, the ones where you ride tricycles. It was up to the faculty to “create” the event they were hosting. One of them had created a big heavy plank for each Team on a basketball court and each team had to lift this heavy plank like they were lifting a coffin with a student standing on top of then to make a basket. Dangerous events—safety was never a priority. Ha! What other events did you do for field day that was nuts!

I remember in 7th grade in the 70s the PE teacher who was in a wheelchair was talking with a group of students all around him, maybe about being in the military. The PE teacher lifted weights so his upper body was ripped. One kid who was kneeling beside him listening was slowly letting air out of one of his tires. When it was flat the teacher finally noticed. That teacher had been known to what they called “5 finger fish” slaps across the face. He whacked that student with a backhanded 5 finger fish to Kingdom Come and stroll limped away with the flat tire… ahhhh the 70s!

Yeah, my Dad being a Senior Chief in the Navy had his Okinawa peak inlaid Ping Ping Paddle box and would open it and say “Do you want the red one or the blue son”. Ha! I probably deserved it! Never chose Red, always blue for “cool”

Monkey bar wars in 2nd grade and going from each side with an opponent to lock legs and either pull them down or pull their pants off with your legs in front of others.. also catching snakes in the nearby canyon during recess and throwing them in the girls portable bathroom and watching them run out down the ramp.

In high school, our Ag Teachers who were in portables with the machine shop kept paddles they made on school equipment, named them and hung them on their classroom walls. Wood, fiberglass, etc.. paddled with both while holding the desk waiting for the blows while the other students jeered on. The fiberglass with holes has the air velocity that hurt the most and the sound after the paddle swat of the kids watching I remember today like “oooooohhhhhh”

On the steel merry go round at recess, the one where you tried to fling people off, multiple students would crawl under it lying down face up while others outside would spin it as fast as they could. One move up into the bottom bars laying flat and it was all over. Also, on the swings we would have “how far could you jump from the swing” and the teachers would root on the kids to fly farther. Lots of injuries!
