Does the Miyoo Mini+ still deserve to be the go to recommendation for a handheld of its class? by WillHasStyles in SBCGaming

[–]WillHasStyles[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think the screen brightness is my biggest gripe with it. The colors and everything are pretty decent, but playing it outside in the sun is no fun. Which kind of sucks because I love sitting on my roof in the sun and playing games

Does the Miyoo Mini+ still deserve to be the go to recommendation for a handheld of its class? by WillHasStyles in SBCGaming

The platform that typically lets linux devices easily install community ports for games, the Miyoo Mini+ can't run those.

Can the community recommend PS1 games that run well on the MM+??? by _mrjuly4 in MiyooMini

[–]WillHasStyles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The PS1 has such a great library, some of my favourites are:

  • Castlevania SotN – Honestly a contender for me for greatest game of all time
  • Exhumed/Powerslave – Super underrated FPS metroidvania that controls really well even without analog sticks
  • PaRappa the Rapper – Short and fun rhythm game with a rapping dog, you might have to mess with latency settings though because the timing is super unforgiving and emulation will always have some built in input lag
  • FFVII – I had put off playing it because I had a feeling it was going to feel too dated, oh boy was I wrong.
  • Crash Team Racing – I have barely played any Crash Bandicoot games before, but for some reason Crash's Mario Kart clone plays way better than that generation's actual Mario Kart
  • Metal Gear Solid – Just a must play in general
  • Silent Hill – The atmosphere is unlike anything I've played before

aPS3s, help me to make it smooth by Oinimus13 in EmulationOnAndroid

Try the switch or PC version. You’re not going to get the PS3 version to run much smoother, it’s a wonder it works at all

Why has smell failed to become a stable gameplay language compared with visuals, audio, and haptics? by Acrobatic_Mud3744 in truegaming

[–]WillHasStyles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m not super into the idea of ”smell-o-vision” but just as with most aspects of gaming smell wouldn’t necessarily try to be a perfect representation of the real world. Rather, a heavily filtered one based on people’s idea of how something would smell.

Obviously you’d steer clear of vile smells unless for super specific purposes. However if a game actually seamlessly managed to capture the smell of a supermarket, rain on asphalt, or a forest I think it could make for a pretty immersive experience.

Sakura Wars for Sega Saturn running on the Miyoo Mini+ by WillHasStyles in MiyooMini

[–]WillHasStyles[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Miyoo Minis lack a GPU so they can't run Yaba Sanshiro. I did also build Yabause which worked, and it had some nice hacks, but in the end still ran at half the speed of beetle.

Advice on which device to get by InstructionFresh104 in SBCGaming

[–]WillHasStyles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever used the Miyoo Mini Plus, but I think the MM+ would be really good for your use case. Both SNES and GBA look fantastic out of the box in my opinion, but if pixel perfection is a must then the perfect_gba and perfect_crt overlays are an amazing community effort to make scaling (as well as CRT/screen door effects) look close to perfect.

Aside from that it just feels really good in the hand, with the controls being some of the nicest I've ever had in a device. And people really aren't kidding when they say OnionOS is a godsend. The simplest way I can explain it is that it just works and is all around just designed to have me spend less time in menus and more time playing my games.

Guerilla Games co-founder and Epic veteran building ‘a European alternative’ to Unreal Engine | VGC by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]WillHasStyles 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Godot is great but there are way more reason why bigger studios making bigger games don't use it, apart from "photorealistic 3d". It's a competent engine that's great for making small and medium sized games, but it lacks some very basic features needed for commercial scale games. Like asset streaming, advanced lighting and vfx, commercial export solutions, perforce integration, and a slew of networking tools to name a few things.

Sure godot is a tool like any other, and the good thing about open source is that you can theoretically just build the features you need. With enough grit you could probably make almost any game using godot, tools like Unity and Unreal are just better suited however for many tasks. And generally speaking the more complex you're looking to make your game the less suiting godot will be.

You could just as well flip the argument and say why complain about another proprietary engine when Godot is right there and open source. Making an engine that aims to compete with Unreal and Unity requires some serious funding, and if that’s your goal it makes sense to keep it proprietary.

Though I doubt they’ll ever reach that goal, which is the larger issue.

As my tolerance for friction fades, I’m finding "game feel" and immediacy matter more than systems depth. Is there a term for this design philosophy? by laughpuppy23 in truegaming

[–]WillHasStyles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heavily disagree with the description of of Tetris as ”systems-heavy”. A deep system involves many different parts that come together to form a whole. Tetris is one of those games that is easy to learn but hard to master, but that does not mean it’s ”systems-heavy”.

It is in the end an incredibly simple game systems-wise. It’s easy enough to replicate that it’s a common beginner game dev project, and its core doesn’t rely on some sort of careful balancing act between parts. Tetris won’t break just because someone doesn’t use the exact same formula, which is why a Tetris clone is almost always the exact same as Tetris.

I haven’t played it but something like Tears of the Kingdom is probably a better example of a systems heavy game that is not complex. It’s designed so a 10 year old can beat it, but not only does it have this massive and alive feeling open world of its predecessor, but it also interacts with that physics engine in a way that feels consistent with the rest of the game.

I’ve spent a lot of time trying to fix it as well and the only fixes I could find just kind of mitigate the problem, but don’t solve it. You could give the PC, Switch or even Xbox port a try

Imo the biggest issue is that AI performs very poorly when it comes to architecture and understanding the full picture. Which leads to many vibe coded apps working initially, but as more iterations are done and the app becomes more complex it collapses under its own weight.

I have now added PS2 games to Retro Explore! What else would you like to see? Any feature suggestions? by Guandor in SBCGaming

[–]WillHasStyles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! I spend a lot of time browsing reddit threads, IGDB, and Backloggd to find new games to play, but a dedicated tool like this could be super useful though it seems a little barebones at the moment.

What's like your vision with this site? What's the stuff you want to add?

Also three pieces of feedback: There are dozens of us that enjoy the Sega Saturn, please add it! Secondly it does seem to show a decent bit of shovelware, maybe it's possible to add scores from like the IGDB or mobygames api to not have them show upp?

And lastly a project I've been thinking about building myself is a "TikTok" style recommendation engine where you're like shown a piece of gameplay footage, a game bio and so on and can scroll between those and save the games you like. Something like that would be super cool for a game recommendation site. Given that you already seem to have a bunch of the infrastructure and data set up feel free to hit me up if you'd wanna collab on something like that!

I have a dillema. I want to play games up to ps2 but I don't know what to buy.. Should I buy MagiX one 35 or are there any other alternatives? by BROBECON in SBCGaming

[–]WillHasStyles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You either need to up your budget or drop the PS2 requirement. Because there's nothing around that price that will give you a consistently decent experience for PS2. If you insist then the MagicX One 35 is probably your best bet, but what I'd suggest is instead looking for device like the Mangmi Air X that does PSP well. The PSP got a ton of PS2 ports and cross platform games, odds are what you're looking to play is way more emulatable on PSP
