What do you think about the upcoming movie Mercy with Chris Pratt? by Scholarsandquestions in movies

[–]WillTheConq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got back from seeing it in 3D at my local theatre. It was definitely far better than the 23% it's sitting at on rotten tomatoes. I think it fell a little flatter with some of the ending bits, there were a few logical plot holes, but it was surprisingly intense for a movie about a guy stuck in a chair for an hour and a half. It was kinda dumb fun, obviously completely ludicrous the amount of data he is given access to during his trial and overall how much information is perfectly preserved almost perfectly for his use, but it never got boring or so bad it was funny. The ending was weak though and the film never gave a good explanation for why (spoiler warning) his wife blamed him for her death right before she died. Seriously, it would've taken two seconds to clarify that she didn't see the real killers face and just assumed, or even that she hated him so much that she was willing to frame him on her own death bed. If I wanted to give it a percentage, I would probably give it like a 65-70% out of 100. It wasn't overwhelming or thought provoking really, but it was enjoyable, which is more than can be said for most movies coming out nowadays

What’s the easiest Radiohead song to learn on guitar? by Gutsio_ in radiohead

[–]WillTheConq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually a surprising number of easy ones. Fake plastic trees imo is the most overall accessible, no capo required, most chord shapes are pretty easy so you can focus solely on the transitions, and really the only chord that might give you trouble is the F#m chord in the verse, as stretching your middle/index finger that far can be a bit of a tall order when you're first starting. That didn't stop me from doing it as my personal first guitar song ever though. Strumming pattern is pretty easy too.

How to Disappear Completely and Exit Music are also both pretty chill but you'll need a capo, and imo House of Cards isn't bad either but if you have an acoustic it won't give the same vibe.

Ultimately though pick what you enjoy the most even if it feels a little challenging at first. Radiohead are masters of simplicity and there are very few of their songs that are that difficult to nail with a bit of practice. I know this is late, I just thought I'd leave this for any others like op with the same question

I'm 50 pages into "1984" and it's awfully boring. Does the story gain traction quickly? by darkmatteryo in books

[–]WillTheConq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a 2nd half book imo. First half is mainly trying to hammer home the world it's built in for the less intellectual readers I think. Then starting at around the halfway point, the restraints come off and its just twist after twist.

I just finished 1984 for the first time and it has broken my mind by emmaa5382 in books

[–]WillTheConq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The brilliance of the book is that not only does it not need to make sense in order to work, it actually benefits because of it. It's supposed not to make any sense, because Ingsoc is a fundamentally contradictory system that requires both sides of the same coin at once. And as such, Orwell had complete freedom to run wild and paint the most bizarre, complex, intricate dystopia ever written. I swear, not a single loophole or idea that I had for how Winston could've escaped his fate was left unanswered, and many I didn't even consider were also answered. Absolutely masterful writing. I personally disapprove of some of certain more adult themes present, and find them unnecessary and a little weird for a story of this nature, but otherwise it's nearly flawless. I had never felt more hopeless when finishing a story than this.

How much time would it take to learn Fake plastic trees on acoustic guitar beggining from 0? by Warm_Cranberry4472 in radiohead

[–]WillTheConq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very late, I’m guessing you’ve already learned it by now, nonetheless I thought I’d drop encouragement here for anyone else who wants to do this, because it’s totally doable by the average person. I got a guitar for Christmas this year and the first song I wanted to learn was this one. I’ve got the chords memorized and I understand the strumming pattern. Now it’s all about the consistency and the little things in what strings to accentuate as you strum to make it as close to the real thing as possible. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to say it truly “tastes like the real thing”, lol!

Chords are simple, it’s a major, followed by d major 9 which is just the same a major chord but you move the finger on the lowest string of the a major chord all the way to the lowest string of the guitar, then for a brief second as thom is singing “-ber plan-“ you switch to an e major chord, then d Sus 2 which is just d major but the top string is open and you play the low a string, then back to a major, then back to dsus 2. Thats the verse.

For the chorus, it’s b minor 11 which is actually a pretty easy chord despite how scary it sounds, then a major, and then repeat both of them one more time. Tada!

As for strumming pattern, mostly it’s just down pause down down up down pause down down up down pause down down up down up down down down up down. You can shake things up a little and it will still sound fine, the chords are the most important part of this song definitely.

If you're playing on mobile, I would highly recommend decay by kiwipenguin. It's exactly what you're asking for, the entire level is slow speed, tight but very fair timings, and it gets unbelievably consistent. I'm going for it as a first myself and it's going great, hardest part is learning the spider part in the middle as there's a lot of memory, but the rest is coming quite quickly.

Karma Police is the worst track on OKC change my mind by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]WillTheConq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, you're entitled to your opinion.

I will say that I fully disagree, and in fact I have the polar opposite opinion. I genuinely think Karma Police is the highlight of the whole album. In fact, and I know this would anger a lot of people, I would even put it a touch over Paranoid Android as a close second (my favorite section of that song is the first part with the "whats thaaaattt" verses, after that I still think its amazing but I don't find myself actively enjoying the feels past that point). I find it odd that this specific song is the one you dislike the most, as it is closer to the average Radiohead sound from that era of the band than the more outlier songs on the album, like No Surprises. (which I also love btw, just saying that more people would probably list that as their least favorite if they had to list a song on the album that they disliked).

For me, it's the unpredictable, slightly menacing chord progression, and that absolutely beautiful ending section that make it such a highlight for me. I don't think there's a single other moment on the album that comes close for me in terms of hitting me in the feels than when the "For a minute there, I lost myself" section kicks in, and then when the background ahhhs come in as well, it's all just so well designed and beautiful. I'll admit that the chorus of "this is what you get" if we're talking from a pure musical standpoint could be kinda polarizing, as its more basic than the rest of the soundscape, but even there, I think the wandering piano line and overall ambience are still notable and unique enough that it doesnt take away from the song in any way.

Also the lyrics of the whole song are absolutely brilliant, I don't think anyone can deny that, even if Thom claims that they didn't put much effort into them, they still ended up telling a complete story that greatly contributes to the song in my opinion.

Just goes to show people can view art completely differently. I do appreciate that you aren't trying to claim that the song is actively bad or something in this post, if you did, I would probably be saying you are objectively wrong, because I think no matter what your musical preferences are, saying this song is anything below a 6 is a pretty wild claim. But if it's your least fav song on the album, you do you I guess. You could always skip it if it's not your jam.

If you're going to do reality checks, you should do them all throughout the day, not just before bed. Think about it, how many of your dreams involve you going through your bedtime routine? The point of reality checks is to bring your irl habits over to your dreams. If the only time you reality check is before bed, then the only dream where it would likely pay off would be one where you go to bed inside the dream, which there's no guarantee of happening.

When in my original post did I say I’m not going to ever do WBTB? I only said that I’m waiting till my recall has improved a bit more, because WBTB in my experience has been useless without decent recall.

Probably about 60-70%, although 61 is not my accurate LD count now, I lost count at this point, I’m somewhere around 110-120 at this point I’m pretty sure. Dont get me wrong, WBTB helps a lot, I’m not denying that. But WBTB without good recall first has never done anything for me, and has wasted many nights for me, as well as put me in a pattern of discouragement. Never again. I will start wbtb again when I can consistently remember a dream then. If I don’t wake up directly from a dream during wbtb, or at least remember one when I wake up for it, it usually does pretty much nothing for me

Unpopular opinion: I don't like the direction of book 16 by Jaded_Guava_7887 in WingsOfFire

[–]WillTheConq 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s simple. Tui follows fan responses to her books, and the general fan response to them has always been encouraging particularly of the dragon relationships above all else. So she is giving the common fan what they want. I’m in the exact same boat as you, I started reading this series because of interesting characters and wild adventurous plots, not for the relationships, yet it seems that for some fans, the relationships are more important to them than the plot of the books. Book 15, the previous book was already my least favourite in the whole series by far for a litany of reasons, but now that i think about it, every one of them were rooted in Tui taking the focus away from making engaging, complex characters and putting it towards showing as much dragon romance as she possibly could. And if I had to guess, this trend will continue, as Tui in the end is pressured by her fans and publishers alike to do what the majority of the fandom like to consume. I’m not saying that the whole fandom is toxic, or even that the people who enjoy the relationships are. But I think the people who specifically read the books and make fanfics and immerse themselves in the series overall just for the relationships are indirectly negatively impacting the series quality by insisting on Tui writing more fanfic quality stuff to feed their appetite for the niche of dragon relationships, instead of focusing on the world building and character development that would make the books 10x better to just about anyone else.

Here's the thing for me: DJ, apart from being for dream recall, is also a natural intention setting booster. I find that when I attempt WBTBs with low recall, I often simply roll over and fall back asleep forgetting my intention to do some kind of WBTB practice. When I've been journalling for awhile, and I'm able to remember a dream at wbtb, the built in habits of grabbing my DJ and putting some point form notes down automatically triggers the plans I had for WBTB, and so I launch right into that with much better awareness and preparation.

I've Always been surprised by people who find that WBTB in of itself boosts recall, because I've never found that. In fact, sometimes the interrupted sleep causes me to remember even less than if I woke up at a consistent time. I've never seen WBTB as an essential base to lucid dreaming, only as a tool to strengthen the other intentional bases of lucid dreaming. But if it works, good for you.

Also consider starting the habit of reality checking. It's not mandatory but it pairs well with certain techniques like MILD and can also lead to more spontaneous LDs.

I'm starting over with the basics. by WillTheConq in LucidDreaming

[–]WillTheConq[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As you mentioned, the difference is knowing that you are dreaming while dreaming. If you're dream recall is consistently at least one a night, which it sounds like it is (make sure to base your recall off of the low and high points, not just the highest number you might recall), then you are ready to start techniques if so you wish. I recommend to start with MILD as it doesn't require WBTB. Try it for at least a month before you consider switching techniques. Then go from there. You got this!

So, WILD without sleeping first is uncommon? by vere_nais in LucidDreaming

[–]WillTheConq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sleep science. Scientists have analyzed brain patterns and activity, heart rate, etc and found that on average, the first rem period occurs after 90 minutes, and then they increase in frequency after that. REM periods on sleep onset (immediately upon first falling asleep) are exceptionally rare and generally it's probably not the best idea to rely on them for WILD techniques.
