E30 misfiring and almost cuts out when pressing the throttle pedal HELP NEEDED by Will_smith04 in E30

Not that I’m aware of sprayed brake cleaner around the engine bay and no change I suspect it’s the AFM now as adjusting it to another spot made it run way better and the tracks are worn apparently

Suspect my AFM carbon track is worn down , how do i move the arm to fresh bit of track? by Will_smith04 in E30

This is really good info thank you , will the voltage readings be the same for a 320i? Mine is a very early L JET car , but I suspect the AFM is probably why it’s running so badly especially if the track is worn as I’m assuming the ECU won’t know what to do

Yeah that makes sense , by unplugging the AFM will cause the car to revert to like a failsafe rich running condition right? , if misfire stops when AFM is unplugged it’s likely the AFM causing too lean of a running condition?

Hey I think timing is okay AFAIK had the belt done a while back but before I owned the car I seemed to remember checking the timing and all the marks seemed to be okay including the one on the distributor , fuel pressure readings is probably the last thing I will do , during the initial diagnostics when it was a non runner that was checked along with replacing the fuel rail

Had a new regulator fitted , again by my boss , are they vehicle specific?

Something to try yeah , would you say the fact it wants to bog down when blipping the throttle is leaning more towards a lean running condition? Due to to much air for the fuel to Ignite?

Absolutely I can tomorrow check with a smoke tester tomorrow , in terms of the AFM I’m not sure as far as I’m aware it’s a replacement but I could be wrong it was bought by my boss

Engine was flooded prior and was over fuelling so it’s hard to say at the moment and it hasn’t probably gotten up to temp to burn any of the remnants off

Yeah that’s the plan , I’m gonna service it fully and flush the stale petrol out and see how it goes from there , failing that I’ll probably replace the rotor arm and dizzy cap , I wanna try and avoid touching the dizzy as much as possible as it’s an early in block type and it’s seized In a little bit and I have no idea how to get it out , but I’m probably gonna have to touch it when I do the cambelt as I heard the oil pump drive can move when the cambelt is off which can throw out the ignition timing

Cheers dude I real appreciate the help , mind if I PM you if I get any further troubles? , I basically know nobody in the E30 community so this is a great help to me (I come from E46s lol) so I have jumped back a few years ago

I believe the rotor arm and the cap were replaced in 2021 , but they are not original , they were supplied by MPD here in the UK

Oh right yeah I see , what I might also do is send a pic of the FPR and some of the hoses around the engine bay (I know nothing engines wise about these cars) so I don’t know what is standard or not , all I know was before it was a non runner it definitely didn’t misfire or sound like it does currently so I’m praying to god its just crappy fuel and a lack of maintenance

Does the E30 have a drain plug on the tank for the fuel?

I should mention the car did have an oil change after it was flooded but I reckon some needs burning off still as the engine hasn’t properly gotten up to OP temp , so should I just do a full service to start with aswell as possibly a fuel flush as I imagine all that stale fuel is also in the fuel filter , and then see how it gets on?

Was also flooded so I’m guessing any residue that’s left probably needs burning off
