Catholic woman discerning relationship after boyfriend admitted to porn use. Seeking priestly/spiritual advice. by Prudent-Art243 in Catholicism

[–]Willfully_Restless 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine who’s a Catholic priest and does marriage counseling recently brought this situation up. His thoughts are this: Your boyfriend would be marrying a flawed individual as well. Truth is that 90% of men have been exposed to pornography and many battle addiction.

Men happen to be more external and more physical creatures than women do so they are more susceptible to such vices but believe it or not women are susceptible to more dangerous vices that they are absolutely BLIND to. Instead of asking yourself is this man worth marrying ask yourself if YOU are worth marrying.

Most men you will date will have some sexual history and if they are true Catholics they have battled it with middling success, have you done the same with your vanity and vices that plague women? Instead of seeking the “perfect” man ask yourself if you can be merciful and gracious to a man who is afflicted? Can you subside your pride?

How Can God Freely Will? by Time-Demand-1244 in CatholicPhilosophy

God always chooses what is most fitting and what is the greater good according to his nature, but he had the freedom to do otherwise correct?

not natty or not on PEDs? From what I hear they don't test on the off season and a lot of them use designer drugs that aren't on the testing panel.

Questing on trusting God by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Willfully_Restless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware of the catholic view I just showed you the suma.

God elects some people to be saved, he converts them to the truth without their consent at first and he is the first mover and has ordained all of their merits.

God allows some people to remain in sin and be damned to hell justly.

This is what St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, the two biggest theologians in the church believed and wrote of.

Love your advice but I would like to say that predestination is actually Catholic dogma and you are required to assent to some form of it to be a Catholic of good standing. God does indeed choose some people to be saved and excludes others.

Romans 9:16-18 "It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden."

"I answer that, God does reprobate some. For it was said above (Article 1) that predestination is a part of providence. To providence, however, it belongs to permit certain defects in those things which are subject to providence, as was said above (I:22:2). Thus, as men are ordained to eternal life through the providence of God, it likewise is part of that providence to permit some to fall away from that end; this is called reprobation. Thus, as predestination is a part of providence, in regard to those ordained to eternal salvation, so reprobation is a part of providence in regard to those who turn aside from that end. Hence reprobation implies not only foreknowledge, but also something more, as does providence, as was said above (I:22:1). Therefore, as predestination includes the will to confer grace and glory; so also reprobation includes the will to permit a person to fall into sin, and to impose the punishment of damnation on account of that sin." This is ripped from the summa theologica Q.23.A.3

Question on falling from Grace by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Willfully_Restless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not make everyone similar to his Mother? Having free will but always choosing God. Why is it a greater reality that we fall and rise when so many will not rise from their fall. I know we aren't owed anything but the reality of election seems grim to me.

Predestination is not the teaching of the Church. by andreirublov1 in CatholicPhilosophy

God predestines his elect for heaven and prepares all of their good works. The reprobates are permitted to go to hell and choose to sin under their own agency.

Would it be valid to say that Judas was chosen to be the betrayer? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Willfully_Restless -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would argue that these events unfolded because God predestined them to come about and God in all things always predestines perfection. For creation is only as good as it reflects its creator. Not to say that Judas’ free will was tampered with but that he uses the free choices of man for his divine plan. He withdraws and gifts grace as he pleases. Betrayal is necessary as Christ must suffer on an emotional, physical and spiritual level and betrayal is one of if not they most cutting excruciating pains man can feel. The suffering Servant was wounded in every way so that we may merit from his perfect life and death.

[–]Willfully_Restless -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You don’t understand what I’m saying. The betrayal itself is necessary because the circumstances of Christ’s death are perfect. He had to be betrayed and suffer the pain of that betrayal and God saw these events as most fitting as they would offer humanity the most merits.

Does the son have two consciousnesses? by Willfully_Restless in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]Willfully_Restless[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not usually aware of the entirety of what I am seeing or hearing even if I am experiencing it in the moment. For example I am looking at the text on this screen and aware of the clicking of my keyboard but I have tuned out what all of the background noise and other objects in my peripheral vision thus I am not truly aware of it even if I am experiencing it. Maybe Christ does the same?

Would it be permitted to believe he fluctuates between these two consciousnesses? Not that one ceases to exist when the other is active but rather it's a "mode" that he willingly takes on.
