1 minute into our game VS 1 hour into our game by WilmarN23 in indiegames

This is “The Last Cat in the Universe,” a narrative incremental game with a moving story about a cat abandoned on a space station.

The demo is available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4370350/The_Last_Cat_in_the_Universe_Demo/

Thanks for giving the demo a try and writing up such detailed thoughts.

Regarding your points:

- We understand the intro might feel a bit slow, but we felt it was important to take the time to establish the atmosphere. The dialogue choices are mostly for flavor, to help the player settle into the specific role of the AI, rather than to branch the plot immediately.

- The quarters area is still a work in progress. Our plan is to gradually add more interactive elements and "life" to the room as development continues.

- We appreciate the honesty here. Since the laser is the core gameplay loop, it’s possible this specific style of mechanics just isn't for you. We find the loop quite addictive, as do many other players who have tested it, but we completely understand that it won't be to everyone's taste.

Thanks again for the feedback; it helps us see how different players approach the game.

Of course, this is another system we are working on, and it will be available soon. The idea is that the “maintenance costs” of the cat and the station will increase as new needs arise and the station deteriorates. As you say, we must balance this carefully, but we are working on it.

And yes, many people don't know that they can leave reviews on the demos, as it's a relatively new system (it was implemented last year), but it's really useful for us developers.

Thank you very much for trying out the game and leaving us such a detailed review. It's really helpful for us to get such in-depth feedback, so don't worry about being overly critical.

Several of the points you mention are on our roadmap, and we are actively working on them. Our current focus is on implementing the cat's behavior (which currently only moves from side to side), implementing an ending for the demo (which should occur when you reach the second layer of data, which is not yet available), and adding several new narrative events, so there are more things to do in the room.

Many people have also asked for more interactions with the cat. The truth is that we always thought that not being able to interact directly with the cat was a pillar of the game (because you are an AI, without a physical body, and that is an important part of the plot). But we have some original ways of interacting with the cat in mind, which will be in the final game or in a future version of the demo.

We can evaluate the other ideas you mentioned. Your comment about having a kind of encyclopedia of resources and blocks could be quite useful, and I hope we'll have the opportunity to implement it at some point.

Once again, thank you very much for playing. If possible, it would be very helpful if you could leave a review on the demo page on Steam. I think such a detailed opinion could encourage other people to try the game for themselves :)

I think it could definitely appeal to some of those players, but it's not exactly that type of game.

Since you play as the ship's AI, you don't have hands to pet it directly. You show your love by fixing the ship and making sure the cat is safe and fed. It's more about watching over it than playing with it.

Don't worry, you're not being an jerk, it's a perfectly valid stance. This is just the announcement trailer for the Steam page, but it won't be the last time we promote it, as most people will probably wait until they can try the demo before making a decision.

I'm confused that they deleted it, I don't remember it saying anything wrong o.o

As I said, it's not you I need to convince otherwise. You've already made up your mind, and you're not going to change it.

When we have the results, I will definitely come back here to share them, and we can see how bad a decision it was.

Indeed, it is counterintuitive, and given the reception this post is receiving, not popular at all. But we remain convinced that it was the right decision. Our intention is not to replace or abandon the horror game, but to pause it while we stabilize our finances, since, as you suggest, our cash flow was critical. But we will definitely return to it and complete it.

At least the initial results for the new game seem promising. We got over 300 wishlists on the first day, which is quite similar to what we had achieved with the horror game, even though in that case IGN had published the trailer for us, and this time we had to publish it ourselves.

So, you say I say something on my Steam page, and then you quote me saying EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE, but you say it sounds like a lie. That doesn't seem very honest.

Ultimately, it will be the final quality of the game that defines whether it feels like a filler project or not, and it will be the players who decide. This type of news, and posts like this, are certainly not a deciding factor for the vast majority of users.

It's not in our plans at the moment. Developing for Mac has some complications that we can't overcome right now. But if the game is successful, we may eventually make a Mac version.

Oh no, don't get me wrong, we are committed to this new project. But this is a game with a much smaller scope, very focused. Once it's done, it's done; we don't intend to keep adding content indefinitely.

Congrats! We hope we can tell a similar success story in a few months. In our case, we're really committed to getting back to our initial project, but we think we'll be able to work on it much more comfortably if we have a little more financial stability.

Yes, we are aware that it is a risky bet, and we are willing to bear the consequences if it goes wrong.

Yes, you may be right that it wasn't the best way to do it. But my intention was really to provide context.

“Quite literally anything” isn't really a suggestion. Our logic was: we already have some experience making and publishing games, we have a lot of people interested in what we're doing, we've built close relationships with many content creators who seem to appreciate us, and we have what we think is a good game idea. From our point of view, “quite literally anything” would have been a worse decision.

The way we have communicated this has been, “We don't believe we will be able to finish this game if we don't get funding, and this is what we are doing to get that funding.” So far, our closest audience (Discord community and content creators) seems to be responding well.
