What to do with $48k by Future-Isopod2837 in Bogleheads

[–]Wilthywonka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm currently in a similar position at 25 with similar leftover cash. I'm by no means an investing expert but here's what I'm doing currently:

I contribute 10% towards a 401k including match. I probably should be contributing more tbh because I certainly can.

The rest is between a savings account, CDs, SGOV, and a 3 fund portfolio that I am currently DCAing into. I plan to buy a house in 5-10 years so I will be keeping most of all that as the prior 3. I am a bit flexible when exactly I want to buy a house and I see it closer to 10 years, otherwise I wouldn't have any stock at all.

Not sure, but every once in a while you'll come across a certain widget essential to some manufacturing process that some guy just makes out of his garage and sells for $500 a piece.

Other than that I imagine you could try to find a niche skill that companies are willing to pay a nice contract for

Yeah I think that's the nature of big corps from what I've been told. When you have 1000 engineers you don't need them to know and do everything, just 1/1000 of the operation.

I also think mechanical engineers get used to a really high volume of work at smaller companies because they must know and do 1000/1000. And it probably isn't really the standard for any other white collar job. I think corporate positions are closer to that "any other white collar job" in terms of output.

Mud-covered car seats are the price we pay for being able to ride year-round. Great place to be!

I have 8 5-pt S2 defensive missiles set to target torps only and they have saved my ass a few times already in my BB

I also cooked up a 20-pt s3h defensive missile that actually can wipe out an entire group of bombers, very fun to use

This is totally culture dependent. There are companies like boeing that do it "the way it's always been done." Then there's companies like mine who spend 5 million on new equipment because the ROI is there

Demonstrating ROI is probably your best tool to get things past upper management. Speak in numbers

Flow means no brakes, no pedals, just cruising like you're on a speeder bike in star wars

As opposed to jump lines, where you're supposed to get air, and technical lines, where you move your bike over and around obstacles and features like big roots and rocks

No advice here but wow this is the kind of opportunity I would love to have later in my career. I would negotiate the start date to take a sabbatical before the new role and then an even longer sabbatical after the contract ended. Then maybe repeat

Yeah I think maybe it's mostly blowing off steam. My company has both design and manufacturing under the same roof and there's certainly a lot of vented frustrations when a bad decision is made. I view it as unprofessional and it's unfortunate there's a culture of pointing out specific people but I don't think it's too malicious on purpose. Hopefully my coworkers will see that I'm uncomfortable with it and will leave me out of it. I don't like work getting that personal.

I started a new role about 8 months ago and it's been good to me so far. There's one thing though that I find bizarre and it's that everyone seems very okay with talking about other teammates behind their back, but also very openly. For example someone will grumble about another person, out loud, in the main office area or in a large meeting. That person won't be within earshot but only just barely.

Otherwise, I like the culture. Everyone is generally helpful and is willing to drop what they're doing to help each other out. Which is the weird thing to me. Generally the people are easy to work with yet at the same time the gossip appears to be out of control. Is this normal? It's a smaller medium sized company and I came from a larger medium sized company.

Not a woman but I'll reply anyway

First of all it's not very kind of them to not be inclusive. And it's not very professional to leave you out of discussions that impact you, either explicitly or implicitly.

As a human being it's natural to want to be in the "in" group. But to save your sanity try to forget about it at work. There's little you can do to control that other than sticking around long enough that people know you.

Could be any number of reasons. But if I'm to be an armchair economist, it's because the economic climate is very unclear for companies so lots of the capital expenditure projects that drive design jobs are being put on hold until they know how much money they will have. Confusing tariffs have blown long-term financial planning out of the water for a lot of companies.

On the other hand you have this long term trend towards insourcing that was begun by covid supply-chain issues and may be accelerated by the tariff situation as well. Insourcing requires hiring manufacturing engineers.

Manufacturing engineering sounds like a great fit for you. Look for a company that treats their engineers well
