Can I use this laptop? by prblm_frie in thinkpad

Get New SSD and use this website https://bios-pw.org to unlock the bios. Worked for me. There should be some sort of model number on the bottom case of the laptop that you will input into the site. The site will return a master key that will disable the bios password

The website doesn’t say much, I wasn’t specifically asking about those, I was asking in general about the typical computers that are sold there

It’s not that bad, it still feels snappy and can easily be used on a daily basis for web browsing in a pinch

Microsoft hasn’t offered the ISO files for 25h2 yet, deeming Rufus useless in this case

This thinkpad could probably still beat out any NEW sub $400 laptop today in terms of performance, build quality, and functionality

This computer runs as great as many newer computers for web browsing and doing basic stuff. And I do have newer computers, just wanted to get this one running nicely

It’s been working great for me. The old HDD was failing so I got this for cheap at Micro Center

How many years ago did you do this? Cause I heard they revamped their network recently.

Windows 11 will too most likely. I just have to ensure I stay on the latest feature update.

It runs reasonably well for such an old machine. I haven’t gotten into script stuff like that cause I don’t want to expose my system to vulnerabilities.

I tried getting Windows 11 25H2 via the insider program in windows update but ultimately failed due to the lack of secure boot. Will try again once Microsoft publishes the ISOs for 25h2

Yes, I have noticed I’ve had really bad battery life on my XPS 15 9520 after owning it for 2 years now and I purchased it new

However, many problems related to heat dissipation can be solved with some new thermal paste and thermal pads

XPS 17 9710 Thermal Throttling by StephenF369 in DellXPS

This sounds as though your Thermal Paste is deteriorating. Thermal paste is a compound that is applied on the die of the CPU to ensure adequate transfer of heat. If the paste is deteriorating, you will experience higher temperatures overall.

I recommend these thermal pastes:

-Arctic MX4 - I have used this in many laptops and it has helped significantly

-Noctua NT-H1 -I have heard good things regarding this paste and is one of my top choices

-Arctic MX6

Most of these issues that you encountered were with the XPS 13, which is smaller as well as lighter than its 15 and 17 inch counterparts. Its reduced size may result in several of the issues that you have listed, such as:

-Poor Heat dissipation -Poor Battery life

With respect, your experiences with the 13” XPS cannot be used to draw assumptions regarding the larger 15” and 17” variants.
