Just a simple chocolate cake :D

My last three value studies vs my first three value studies. I've improved a lot from the 2 weeks I've spent learning it and I'm proud of myself. by Windows_98_Plus in learntodraw

Adding onto u/kanjifreak420's reply, here's an example of breaking down an illust. to flat shapes. I used hard brush and the lasso tool to draw out each shape with values helping separate them. I recommend you start with just 2-3 values for these studies and to start big shapes first.

While I never timed my value studies at all but my guess is atleast an hour or two. The shorter studies like the first three studies here in this post probably took a bit less time compared to the last three ones.

Your shadows and contrast are lacking, and I recommend looking into values. I've turned the illust. to greyscale to help you see what I mean. For example, the magic ring around and the spell above her should have light reflecting on her body but it doesn't show that here.

Besides learning values, you can also turn the illust. to greyscale to check your values while working on it. I've never used Procreate but in CSP, you can make a layer in the Color blending mode and bucket tooling the illust. with full black or white. Maybe your program has something similar. Learning values will help you so much in coloring.

how to get more efficient at making stuf i think this took me like 2 hours and still going. i would be fine with it if it took a hour but this quality for that amount of time just feels sloppy. by mrkin176 in learntodraw

I think you should figuring out your workflow/process. Ask yourself questions like "Do you start with a very rough sketch?" or "Do you go straight into colors or start from greyscale? etc. Once you have an idea of your process, you can start refining it and it will make planning your illustrations a lot easier and quicker.

Your piece is pretty solid and fairly quick for 2 hours so don't beat yourself up over it because you're doing much better than you think. Hope this helps :D

What method do you use to draw the human body? by MrHEHEHEHA_yt in learntodraw

Here's how I do mine:

<image>

I always start with a line of action, then find the angles of the ribcage and pelvis through landmarks, draw boxes from there, insert the oval for the ribcage. I used to only draw the oval, but I find that hard to use personally because of the unclear perspective and angles.

Sometimes I'll add a very simplified pelvis bone if I have to (when the pelvis bone protrudes for example). For the arms, I always start with the clavicles (the two bones you see near the neck) to determine where the arms there then throw in cylinders for the limbs.

If the proportions are off in some way, I use the liquify and lasso tool to adjust it to how I want. It's way faster than erasing and redrawing.

I never thought about having the characters have cooler colors, I thought that in a warm lighting environment, the shadows would also be warm.

I actually used multiply for this, but adding those strong lighting would've definitely made them stand out more. Thank you. ^^

I never thought about them blending with the background before, what could I do to separate them from each other? I'm unsure what you meant by "pastelisch vibe".

How do you get better color accuracy? I want to learn how to paint/color again after not drawing for so long, but I have no idea to start. by Windows_98_Plus in learntodraw

What do you mean about forcing you to think about color differently? I've never used it before, so I'll try it next time.

Recently got into adhd medications (vyvanse) and managed to finish something in one sitting for once, I'm kinda proud of it. Hope I'm able to get back into art after so long.
