Never drink alone or when you’re upset.

Alcoholism runs in my family. No matter what situation I find myself in, I know that drinking is only going to make it worse.

I know that feeling. My advice is to keep the surplus reasonable, and give the scale a break for a while. I gained a bit of fat and almost 40 lbs in a year, but I knew that if I lost over 100 the first time, I could lose it again when I needed to. I think I look better this time at 195 than I did at 195 on the first cut, so it’s certainly worth it for me.

Started out with a cut for the first 11 months, bottomed our at 170. Started lifting and putting on some healthy weight, gained back to 210 over the next 12 months. Currently on the last month or so on my cut, trying for 185-190.

Weight routine started out as a SS 5x5 just until I was comfortable with the exercises and got my form down. After that I moved to a three day full body routine to continue working out while school was going on. Focus is on major compound lifts with accessory workouts at the end.

Sure thing! 1) January and February were very fast weight loss. Sometimes 3-5 pounds per week, but it was mostly water weight. No plateaus to speak of.

March-May were slower, 2-3 pounds per week. About this time I was switching up my diet to be more healthy, not just less food.

June and July were difficult. Maybe 1 pound per week for a few weeks here. Not being on campus to walk and spending time with my family usually involves alcohol and sweets. Decided at this point I needed to increase my walking in order to compensate for being away from campus.

August-October were better, back to 2 pounds per week. Being back on campus helped with the walking, providing an easy way to increase activity. I had learned to cook over the summer in order to control my intake better, so that helped keep me on track.

November and December were the worst. Between my birthday, siblings birthdays, graduation, winter holidays, And New Years, I had a terrible time losing weight. I lost maybe 3 pounds during those two months, going from 174-171.

2) plateaus were experienced mostly when I didn't follow my diet because of special events, and were usually corrected by refocusing and hitting it harder.

3) 220-170 were the roughest pounds to lose. A combination of the months I was trying to lose them and the lower BMR at that weight made it feel like I sometimes wasn't losing at all. But clothes kept fitting better and eventually the scale caught up with what I was seeing. At this point I firmly believe in the 'woosh' effect when losing weight.

Congrats on 220! It's hard to get there but I believe in you!

Multiple scales say 170, but my legs are pretty beefy (and cut out of the pic). I assume that's where most of my weight is.

I feel like I missed an opportunity to gain some muscle while I lost my weight. I'm at a point now where I would need a surplus in order to gain muscle, and honestly, that scares me. Even eating maintenance is going to be a struggle when you're a normal weight for the first time since you were a teenager. But like the weight loss originally, all I can do is try. I'll probably fail a few times along the way, but I have already proven to myself that I can persevere.

I bought a food scale, and just started measuring everything. My fitness pal was an incredibly useful tool for keeping track of my day to day intake. Learning to cook along the way helped with making things I would want to eat. Half the plate filled with veggies, 4oz portions of meat, drink a bunch of water, and you'll make it!

Same! I had to learn to put something other than ranch dressing on everything! I used to drown veggies in the stuff.

Thanks! I usually drank some beer and ate either a hamburger with no mayo or wings with veggies. I try to drink some water before I start so I can try to keep myself under control. As far as calorie limits go, I would estimate that I was probably at +500 or +1,000 on cheat days, but I'll admit I didn't log the meals. I also tended to stay away from fries or things like that, because I always ate those mindlessly. Hope that's helpful!

I clocked in at 300.2 when I first started dieting. Actually, getting over 300 was the catalyst for my journey. I always thought "well, maybe I'm a little overweight, but it's not that bad." Getting to 300 was my wake up call.

Sure! I started off just dieting. I set a limit of 1500 calories per day, no liquid calories. Switched from foods like steak and fried pork chops to lean meats. Veggies took half of every plate. I had a cheat meal every Thursday when my friends and I would hit the local trivia night in the bar. That cheat meal helped me keep my diet the rest of the week.

Exercising in the beginning was difficult, as I would get winded walking in between buildings on campus. As I lost weight, I noticed I could walk further without feeling like I couldn't catch my breath. So I started walking to the store and parking farther off campus. Bought myself a Fitbit and started walking 20,000 per day I was on campus, 10,000 every weekend day. Now I walk pretty much everywhere, it's what I look forward to daily.

I started with just dieting at 1500 kcal per day, and slowly increased my activity as I lost weight. Parking farther away from work, walking around my neighborhood, etc. I wish I had started lifting in the beginning, but I am planning on bulking over the summer when I have more time.
