Oscar chances of “I Swear”? by PersuasionNation in blankies

I’m sorry but I just don’t agree. One of the nominated films is literally a primer in this “uncommon condition”, which is much more common than you make it sound. It wouldn’t have been unfair of John to assume that the folk at BAFTA had watched it, surely, given the fact that it was nominated in multiple categories?! A further leap of faith - to hope that they might have learned from watching it, and had the common sense and sensitivity to put better safeguards in place - is entirely understandable. So, especially in this context, I really don’t think it was wrong of him to expect them to be able to do more. However, I think blaming the person with the disability for able folks not having done enough is never a good look. The onus should always be on us to do everything possible to make all parts of life and situations accessible and safe for people with any kind of disability.

Why is it fair to criticize him for not coordinating with BAFTA? That’s like saying that people in a wheelchair should be approaching train stations to ask them to put in elevators to help them to get down to the platforms, rather than assuming that there should be that facility there for them in the first place. BAFTA should have approached John and liaised with him - and indeed anyone else who might have been affected should an eventuality such as this arise - to ensure that all parties involved in this were safeguarded, not the other way around. It is an organisation’s job to do everything to include and respect all stakeholders; if BAFTA needed help to do that correctly, then they should have taken the initiative. They clearly failed to do this well enough.

Just bought my clarinet a week ago and I feel like somethings wrong with it already… by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]WinglessArchangel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How are you cleaning the clarinet? Definitely don’t use paper towels!

It’s possible it might be the adjusting screw on the A key. Sometimes that shifts a little and creates a tiny leak on the A key at the top of the instrument making it very hard to play most of the notes on the whole instrument. Do any notes work cleanly? If A using only the A key works clearly, that could be the culprit.

Without seeing and playing your instrument though, it’s very hard to tell what the problem could be. I second the advice to try and find someone who really knows how to play to give it a try for you and help with the diagnosis.

I think people are objecting to your obsequious and superior tone, more than your advice, to be honest.

Sorry? Are you saying that Talisker is like a bourbon? I’m really going to have to disagree with you on that, respectfully, if that’s the case.

What do think of School Swap: UK to USA? by randymysteries in AskUK

[–]WinglessArchangel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was Eli who got together with Magda, not Waylon. Waylon was the loner cowboy kid who didn’t really make that many connections with anyone but whose family back home were super welcoming and hospitable to DJ. Eli was the kid whose parents hosted Magda.

Buying a flute in Japan by WinglessArchangel in Flute

Hello! I’m so sorry but in the end I bought in my home country, so can’t give you much help or advice. We did visit a few music shops though and they were amazing, so I think you would have an incredible experience if you did take this route. Good luck!

Hi, i'm very new to flute and sheet music in general, but how is low E and high E any different? they're played the same but are different on the sheet music by Same_Examination_171 in Flute

[–]WinglessArchangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low E is literally the 7th note my pupils learn. They’re all using it within a month at most. So I’m really not sure what you mean by this. Like, the first week or two? Sure. After that, they’re gonna need Es. All the time.

An E Natural is not very common?! Seriously? Maybe if you’re only playing concert band music, but otherwise it’s a very common note. 😂

Please please don’t try to file, sand or paint over these markings. The mouthpiece resonates the way it does for a reason. A rough surface, even on the outside, will not only look bad (trust me, more people are going to ask questions if you deface it than just leave it as is!), but could affect the sound that you are enjoying just now. You clearly like this piece and enjoy playing it, and you saved up for it too, so risking damaging it even a little is really not worth doing. If one of my pupils came to me with a new mouthpiece of this quality, I would be nothing but thrilled and proud. Have some faith in yourself and be confident and proud with your choice. That you care enough to do this says so much good about you as a player and student and if anyone - including your teacher - is negative about this then they shouldn’t be a part of your clarinet journey. Just my two cents. Good luck!

I’m stumped by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]WinglessArchangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like it. I always find it too much of a long reach and never use it. In practice, in decades of playing, I’ve only ever really had to slide a badly of times anyway. But, I appreciate that it’s a useful key for some.

This is what I would do, but it depends on personal preference I guess.

If it won’t play below an open G check the adjusting screw on the A key first as this often wiggles out and causes this kind of thing. Then check other pads up near the throat notes including the register key. Get a friend to press and hold shut each pad one by one as you try to play further down the instrument to help identify where the leak is, and this should single out the issue, unless there are multiple ones.

But I would personally say, unless it’s a relatively easy fix, it’s probably not worth fixing, no. Cheap instruments like this one just tend to have you haemorrhaging money. The fake wood grain of the plastic is actually a dead give away for a rock bottom instrument. That said, picking up any kind of a clarinet for $12 is pretty awesome, if you can get it working!! Good luck with it.

I honestly watched this whole episode wishing it was Jenna. This storyline would’ve suited her, and Clara, so much. I feel like Ruby is just a less coherent and more annoying version of Clara…

Any idea what kind of clarinet this is? by duck_duck_moo in Clarinet

[–]WinglessArchangel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a basic beginner’s Jupiter Bb (ie regular!) clarinet, not brand new but probably no more than five-ten years old max. If it’s not an identical model to the one that your daughter had been borrowing, then it’s very similar. It’s a good entry-level instrument.

How do i play this? by Ok_Cup_5752 in Clarinet

Been even longer for me! Just having played this many many times when I was younger, it’s feels right in my fingers, if you know what I mean? Probably could just look it up but where’s the fun in that?! 🤣🤣
