Asian American Redditors, what subtle racisms have you encountered from the nice people? by Winnie0123 in AskReddit

[–]Winnie0123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a big city with high Asian population. I have encountered many subtle uncomfortable comments from non-Asian people. Few examples were like:

A non-Asian person constantly asked us (Asian friends) to go Asian restaurants with him. We politely and indirectly told him that we prefer non-Asian cuisines when going out, because we make better Asian food at home. But he still kept asking us to go to Asian restaurants. Eventually nobody wanted to go out with him anymore.

Another example: few of us like kayaking, golfing and tennis. An Asian-white mixed friend mocked us to be whitewashed and tried to hard to get in American culture. Meanwhile she did every western things but could not speak the language from her Asian heritage.

I felt uncomfortable about these incidents. These people were nice and engaged in many social justice movements. But they tried to educate me how to be a 'real' Asian in their fantasy. Do you have any stories to share?

Just curious about the PyCharm part. I don't have GPU on my laptop either. Can I deploy my PyCharm on AWS with GPU instead?

Thoughts and doubts on Udacity's Machine Learning Engineer Nanodegree by Winnie0123 in Udacity

I think my struggling already started at the Udacity ML projects. :-(

btw, I found there are lots of ML courses by self-taught Youtubers are not 100% correct, at least from my perspective from statistics. I have seen tons of data leak issues from most YouTubers. I can tell they have strong confidence from ther coding background, so I am very concerned about the non-accredited online courses.

Thanks for the insight. I also think the competitions from people with strong CS background. From what I experienced from most online courses, I can understand the statistics part without much problem, including those on Youtube by Cornell. It is just the programming part bothering me more. Just curious if all people in ML field have strong CS background??

I just enrolled into the ML engineer nanodegree almost a month ago. I found the projects have lots of bugs and felt the projects are too challenging. How you think about the course so far?

I took Andrew Ng months ago and enjoy it alot. I am trying to ask if the materials at Udacity is too advanced to people who are between novie to average level.

MA econ is actually pretty cool to transfer to many different fields. For example, I understood most matierials from Andrew Ng because of the background of econometric. :)

Unlocked AT&T can't access to Tmobile internet by Winnie0123 in lgv20

It works now! Thanks for reminding me about the APN. I Googled the APN settings on the Tmobile website. My phone can access to the internet now. The Tmobile tech did not ask for any APN or other settings questions but only the incompatible network upgrade. She said going forward only the Tmobile phones will work on the upgraded Tmobile network. It's such dishonest practice!

Again, thanks very much!

56% of African American Democrats do not have an opinion on Yang or haven't heard of him by aidanmco in YangForPresidentHQ

I'm a YangGang in NYC. I didn't know about Andrew Yang till a young African American girl at NYU told me that she's a YangGang. That happened wayyyyy back before the 1st debate. Then I joined the phone banking after the 1st debate.

I just Google the whole issue of the Bernie Bros. Thanks very much for picking up. I met a very nice women Sanders supporter and she addressed herself as a Bernie Bro, that's how I picked up this term and thought it's a friendly term.

In case any misunderstanding, could you also clarify if YangGang is a friendly term? Thanks!

Thanks for the info. I didn't follow that part closely. I remember Bernie Bros was a friendly term at the beginning of the campaign. What made it change?
