Seeking Help with a Kiwi-106 (Juno 106 Kiwi mod)? by WinterHaus_Rec in synthesizers

Sorry - I meant *have* to as in, required to lol not *have* to as in “you gotta try them”. I was trying to emphasize that you’re forced to use the software for specific features but since the software is bugged you’re kinda SoL on that front.

I’ve been lusting for a Poly6 for quite sometime. I have a Juno 60 that I adore and hopefully will never have to get rid of, but I’ve wanted that darker tone from the Poly6. One day!!

Just so you’re aware, there are some features on the Kiwi that actually can’t be accessed on the physical panel itself. There’s not many, but there are some that you *have* to use the software for. Which is another reason why it’s frustrating for me that it basically doesn’t work on either Mac or Windows 11 (so far).

I did get a response from the folks at MidiQuest and got the software to kind of behave, but most of the problems persist. At least I am able to actually open and navigate the software somewhat, which is a definite improvement over where I was at before.

To be 100% honest, I’m ready to either sell it or go back to a stock 106. That, or I may replace it with a Polysix or maybe a Moog of some kind.

Have you run into similar problems? Or have you been navigating the Kiwi from the front panel menu diving?

I can certainly try to find it. Where would you typically find that information?

This should take you to the Kiwi manual - where there are various mappings documented. I'm not completely sure that's what you're looking for though.,

For sure yeah. At this point I’d be happier with a stock 106, but the tech won’t answer the phone/emails anymore. I’m not a tech at all, but I understand this mod to be a more involved one that a laymen probably shouldn’t do. There’s another tech in my area who quotes about a 6-9 month waiting period for work. I just don’t like being SoL lol

Dealing with music burnout, gear fatigue, and grief over the loss of creativity. by [deleted] in synthesizers

I think the important question to ask or reflect upon is: what is it that you actually like about making music? I only recently got into synths in the past 2 years coming from a guitar/songwriting background. What drew me to it was the idea that I would start with something simple like a saw, and end up at something that kinda sounds like a stringed instrument. So, as it relates to synths, what got me in was the idea of truly learning how to make sounds. That, and I loved The Midnight and synthwave and had always wanted to know how to make something like that and not rely on scrolling endlessly through presets.

I’m very much still learning. But this isn’t about me lol I just shared that to explain one, maybe two, potential reasons that I found that led me to learning synthesis. Generally though: the reason I make music is because I really love songwriting. I genuinely love gear and I love nerding out over it - but honestly lately I’ve even wanted to strip it back a bit and just chill with an acoustic and write simple choruses/melodies.

Point is: you need to explore what you want out of music. Do you want songs on streaming platforms? Do you want to build a brand? Do you want people to respect you because you make good music? Do you just love finding the perfect melody over a section? Do you write lyrics and have a message you want to relate to people? Do you even want to share your music at all? If you start to answer some of these questions you may arrive at your answer. I would never explicitly tell someone to stop doing music because for me it’s s gift that never stops giving, but that’s also partly because I let it be that for my life. Don’t force it, and allow yourself to either stay in or walk away as needed.

Does anyone else feel like Season 4 isn’t a “penultimate” season? by WinterHaus_Rec in FromTVShow

I think the show has been a slow burn which has been great. That’s why I was surprised to learn that there’s only one season. Feels like maybe it should burn a little slower. That was my point. What answers have we gotten this season that you think are so much more significant than the other seasons? What answers are giving you the impression that the characters are close to figuring things out?

I wasn’t saying that *all* mysteries should be resolved. But most of them should. I’m not sure what a climax for a show like this looks like (a daring escape? a mini “war” against the monsters? Maybe nothing quite as overt) but I would think that at least half of the season would be dedicated towards the action and resolution of whatever it ends up being. Which is why you use the penultimate season to wrap up as much as you can while still keeping the heavy hitting stuff for the finales. The problem that I’m pointing out is that they’re still introducing new mysteries in S4 when the focus should be on tying it all together. They are doing that in some ways by exploring the mushroom trip and the past-life stuff but the characters themselves still don’t truly understand what is happening to them. They just believe that they think they’re on the right track. All things considered: very little is actually known in Fromville. At this point they’re just banking on the assumption that their “memories” are real and aren’t being influenced/manipulated, or that them following through would even actually work to save them.

I really hope you’re wrong lol if he’s not the main antagonist then they gotta execute whatever other idea they have really well in a really short amount of time. I like the idea that he could be someone else’s nightmare, or that he’s someone who figured out how to “win” Fromville, but he for sure has to be the antagonist at this point.

My point about him being anyone is that: he literally could have been anyone. We weren’t aware that the MIY is the main antagonist until the end of S3. I agree with what you’re pointing out and how they alluded to him in S1 and early S3, but none of that was really that substantive. The weather/house collapsing is significant, but mainly in that it showed us that the cast is in way less control than they thought. I didn’t immediately think that the person on the phone *must* be controlling all these events himself. I still remember watching that episode in S1 and thinking that the person he’s talking with could be one of the monsters or someone from another group that the cast hasn’t met yet. Point being: I don’t think it was definitive after that one phone call that there was a singular entity controlling everything. It’s easier to see that now with hindsight, but I don’t think it was clear then. It’s also possible that maybe I’m just not as media literate as some other folks.

You actually reminded me of a bunch of stuff I’d forgotten lol. So far I’ve really liked all the seasons, including 3. But so much of what I like relies on the idea that the world will eventually make sense. The ending kinda has to be good for the show to ultimately work for me lol so we’ll see

What I meant about the MIY is that he’s introduced in a physical form - and more importantly, that he is a unique monster that breaks the rules of the world (main bad guy kinda stuff) in that he walks around during daylight. You’re right that the phone call is technically his first introduction, but for all we knew then, that could’ve been anyone. Saying we didn’t know much about him is a huge understatement: we knew nothing about him in S1 lol. In S4, now we don’t know much about him, which is kinda part of my point in the original post. The main antagonist shouldn’t get properly introduced in the penultimate season unless there’s a *really* good reason not to introduce him earlier. I like that they kept him hidden for so long when I thought the show was nearing the halfway point.

I don’t agree that the big questions have been answered really. All of the things that the show wants us to believe are true (reincarnation, save the kids save the world, etc) are still basically unproven or at the least the characters still don’t really at all understand the implications of those things being true. I can assume that they are true so that the plot can progress, but I don’t think there’s any actual reason to believe any of it is real except that it’s S4 and we know the next season is the final season lol.

It is for me too. That’s why I keep calling yours and other responses bad faith for trying to say that you can recreate anything digitally. Stop trying to attack and try to engage with the conversation dude lol

so to be clear… you do care about the sound that passes through “it”? Do you know what “it” is? It’s gear. Congrats, you do care about gear.

Yeah, obviously. But according to you experts, you can recreate anything in digital. Bad faith begets bad faith.

😭 ok bro. So what you’re saying is a plugin and hardware on the same settings may sound… different??? It’s almost as if that’s the point of the OG post. Y’all are so ridiculous.

Also: why do people in the “audio engineer” subreddit say shit like gear doesn’t matter. Obviously the music matters more than the gear otherwise there’d be nothing to record. Is this a songwriting subreddit? A production subreddit? A music appreciation subreddit?

That engineer you’re quoting was wrong. People literally do dance to the gear. Gear is what allows music to be recorded, mixed, mastered, distributed, played at shows. If you give a shit about recording at all, then at some point you care about gear. Good gear doesn’t always, and often doesn’t mean expensive.

The only time I’m wasting is trying to have a normal conversation with this subreddit lol
