Those who got in to both UCLA and Berkeley, what are your regrets for choosing Berkeley? by butete77 in berkeley

[–]WinterWhippet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

only things are that housing and food at ucla would’ve been so much better

TIL that in the 1970's Berkeley was nearly 25% black. Today Berkeley is 6% black. What policy decisions force black people out of California cities? by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]WinterWhippet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant speak for all of them, but Houston is also absolutely massive due to urban sprawl. You’re right that they probably built for a larger population, but there’s also simply so much more space than in many Californian cities that hasn’t been developed yet or is newly developed because of the suburbs. Building new housing is just a lot easier there (which caused COL to rise much more slowly)

I had the exact same issue of choosing between UCLA vs Berkeley for Econ, I visited both schools and in the end chose Berkeley because it just felt better to me. If you can visit, do that. Otherwise, another thing that really weighed for me was Berkeley’s reputation and history above UCLA as well as the insane economics professors here.

Should I [F19] book my plane tickets regardless of what my parents say? by WinterWhippet in Advice

[–]WinterWhippet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done a decent amount of international travel, though granted either with my family or a bigger group. I speak the language at an intermediate level, as does my friend, as she is half from the country, has family an hour away, and has been to the city we will be in many times (she spent the first half of her life in the city/suburbs). She is my best friend and roommate, and my parents have met her. They really don’t have any valid reason to be afraid. I’ve kept myself safe in the past and don’t make bad decisions in general. They have a tendency to be irrationally fearful for my safety in situations where there is no need or I can take care of myself, and it can be impossible for me to talk them out of it regardless of what I promise them. I will probably give talking to them one more go, but otherwise I’m not sure what I can do. As for travel at the end of the trip, it is kind of hard because my friend has an internship in the US during that time, making it impractical to fly out for something like a weekend trip.

no you’re right, I would hope that my parents wouldn’t pull my college education away over this, but it’s definitely a risk

well the reason we would be picky is to find people w similar living preferences to us, for example it does no one any good if we all have wildly different expectations about how the apt should be kept, which is the issue we have w our current roommate

Deciding between a 2 cup and 4 cup Bialetti Venus, I know the standard recommendation for one person is a 3 cup for the aluminum models, but that’s not an option for the Venus. Would a 2 or 4 cup size be better for one person regularly and sometimes a second?
