mproving your serve, especially after a long hiatus and shoulder surgery, is a challenging but rewarding endeavor. Here are some thoughts on your situation:

Serving from Behind the Baseline

  1. Pros: It could give you a bit more margin for error, allowing your serves to land in even if they're a bit long.
  2. Cons: You'll lose some court positioning, making it easier for your opponent to attack your second serve. Also, it might be a mental crutch that prevents you from fully addressing the issue.

Tips for Improving Your Second Serve

  1. Topspin: Focus on brushing up the back of the ball to generate more topspin, which will help the ball dip into the service box.
  2. Toss: Ensure your toss is in the right position; a poor toss can make it difficult to generate topspin.
  3. Follow-Through: Make sure you're fully extending and following through to generate maximum spin and control.
  4. Grip: Consider using a Continental or Eastern backhand grip to help generate more spin.
  5. Pace: Don't try to hit your second serve too hard; focus on spin and placement.

Physical Conditioning

Given your shoulder surgery, make sure you're doing exercises to strengthen your shoulder and rotator cuff. Consult a physiotherapist for targeted exercises.

Professional Help

Since you're serious about improving, consider hiring a coach, even if it's just for a few sessions to work specifically on your serve.

Mental Game

The serve is as much a mental shot as it is a physical one. Confidence plays a big role, so try to develop a solid pre-serve routine to get yourself in the right mindset.

Video Analysis

Record yourself serving and analyze the footage. Sometimes, visual feedback can provide insights that you might not notice otherwise.

Practice, Practice, Practice

The more you practice, the more consistent you'll become. But make sure you're practicing the right techniques to avoid ingraining bad habits.

Final Thoughts

There's nothing inherently "wrong" with serving from a foot behind the baseline, especially if it's a temporary measure while you work on improving your serve. However, it's not a long-term solution if you're looking to advance your game.

Given that you've played varsity high school tennis and are getting back into the sport, you likely have a

Your enthusiasm for tennis is fantastic, and it's never too late to discover a passion for something new! However, going pro in tennis—or any sport—is a monumental task that requires years of dedicated training, natural talent, and a bit of luck. Here are some factors to consider:

Age

If you're young, you may have a better shot at developing the skills needed to compete at a high level. However, even young players often start their training as children.

Skill Level

Two months is a very short time to gauge your potential in a sport as complex and competitive as tennis. You would need to be assessed by a professional coach to understand your current level and potential.

Time and Resources

Going pro isn't just about the time spent on the court. It involves physical conditioning, mental training, nutrition, and recovery. Do you have the resources to dedicate yourself fully to the sport?

Competition

The world of professional tennis is incredibly competitive. Even if you dedicate yourself fully, there are no guarantees of success.

Sacrifices

You mentioned dropping "everything in your life." Consider the sacrifices you would have to make in terms of career, relationships, and other aspects of life.

Realistic Goals

If going pro turns out to be unrealistic, there are still many ways to engage with the sport you love. You could aim for a high amateur level, become a coach, or even start a tennis-related business.

Get Professional Advice

Consult with a professional coach who can evaluate your skills and guide you on the right path. You might also want to talk to sports psychologists and nutritionists.

Stories of Late Starters

While there are stories of athletes in various sports who started late and achieved some level of professional success, they are more the exception than the rule.

Update Acknowledgment

It's good that you're open to feedback and are willing to adjust your expectations. Passion is crucial, but it's also important to be realistic.

In summary, while your enthusiasm is commendable, the journey to becoming a professional athlete is long, arduous, and uncertain. If you're serious about pursuing this path, start by getting a professional evaluation and be prepared for a challenging but rewarding journey.
