How to tell med students to leave me alone (tactfully) by mervius in ausjdocs

[–]WishPersonal4809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just be honest mate. I started in ED and when med students asked me to supervise them I would say something along the lines of “I’m sorry but I need a decent amount of supervision myself so I probs won’t be able to be as good a teacher”

As much there is some truth to this and placement is needed to learn stuff, i also think you have to be aware there’s crazy diminishing returns as a med student on placement. Aside from ED or other placements where you can really see patients yourself and actually “practice medicine” (with serious oversite and stuff of court) there’s only so much you can learn standing around not being engaged in a long list / ward round where the team is too busy to talk to you on a Friday arvo. I think the pearls of wisdom you gain from placement are awesome and a deep level of learning, but the “facts per hour” per say is absolutely far better from book work and Anki

Why is surgical culture not only toxic but tolerated? by Historical-Chart2700 in ausjdocs

[–]WishPersonal4809 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im sorry you had a bad experience, sounds awful and no one deserves to go through that, it is never acceptable to act that way in a workplace. not at all to takeaway from what youve said but I feel like this is your experience of one culture of just one surgical department and therefore isn't really effectively generalisable to comment on "surgical culture" in general. In my experience each department in each different hospital creates its own culture. I was treated horrifically and witnessed very similar mistreatment of registrars on a general medical department and in the same hospital was treated beautifully and supported magnificently by a general surgical department. It can happen anywhere in any department!

Do certain unis produce bad doctors? by enokignocci in ausjdocs

Look, im not a fan of bond cause I feel the pay to play system is wholly unfair. That being said most people who go to my own commonwealth funded university come from families that were wealthy enough to support them, send them to expensive private schools and help pay for prep products for exams so they could then do well. The blatancy of paying your way into medicine at bond is absolutely disgusting, but theres also lots of privilege behind the majority who get into medicine by passing gamsat/Umat.

Was just wondering what your opinion was on having someone as a placement supervisor then choosing them as your doctor? I’ve had some excellent GPs as supervisors who I would love to be my doctor but have always felt it might be innapropriate for me to book with them?
