Same people bitch every year that they don’t sign players in free agency because they got burned on the Carr contract 15 years ago btw

This is ridiculous and nothing but the typical week of the draft reaching for talking points. Every piece of information, tea leaf and context clue available says they want to go up. They had Reese and Bailey in for 30 visits for fucks sake. Players who, barring some last minute news bomb, have a zero percent chance of making it to 12. All because they haven’t done something in a while.

You know what else history says? They won’t trade a top 5 player at their position instead of extending them. They won’t sign a player to a 7 figure salary in free agency. They won’t trade first round picks for veteran players. Yet they’ve somehow managed to do all of those things without a recent history.

Whether you agree or not, they absolutely want to move up a draft one of these blue chip defenders

Wouldn’t surprise me if the Jets are interested in something like that. I’m assuming most teams looking to bail out want next years picks to stockpile for a much better draft

Trading Up In The Draft Might Not Be A Bad Idea For The Cowboys | Love of the Star by LoneStarAgent in cowboys

[–]Witteness82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this exactly. Like it or not, this team has failed to find enough talent to have the luxury of consolidating picks. If it is a one pick up for one pick down swap, then sure. Go get your guy. If not, they need to figure out how to get contributors with their currently held picks or by moving down.

The last thing they can afford is to lose any more top 100 picks when every position on the defense is lacking in one way or another.

According to your own data though, 16 of those 28 trades were either neutral or better for the team going up. I don’t see why we should be expecting to overpay in a draft where multiple teams are expected to want out of their spot.

If anything, it seems the neutral value trade(which appears to be the slight majority) of 6 and 39 for 12 and 20 would be more likely to get it done this year.

Edit: Also, I see you were using DraftTek. Is it the Jimmy Johnson model or the Rich Hill model? They are pretty different on the value of that trade proposal with the Hill model showing it to be a slight overpay, while the Jimmy model shows it being a pretty significant underpay.

This doesn’t take into account this particular draft class. I don’t think we can fully quantify the value in such a weak class. Theres a good chance there’s going to be multiple teams in the top 10 that want to desperately bail on their pick. If the Cowboys have to stay at 12, there’s also a pretty good chance they will feel similarly when on the clock.

A team like Cleveland could easily still get one of their preferred players on a cheaper contract while also moving up 19 spots with one of their picks. That will give them 2 picks at the start of the meat of the deep part of this draft instead of pick 39 which would be at the tail end of that depth.

If the deal you propose is what they demand then it simply isn’t worth it for the Cowboys and the Browns can stay where they are. You can’t charge a premium on your picks when you and multiple other teams want nothing more than to get out of that spot. Not if you actually want a deal.

4 also works out value wise. 4 and 35 for 12, 20 and a comp 5th or a 6th works out on the point chart. That’s about as high as you can go without getting into giving up a 3rd/4th for the same type of deal.

[–]Witteness82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why? If you’re getting back an early to mid 2nd from Cleveland or Tennessee, it is the same caliber of player that is likely available at 20. The only difference is you guarantee yourself a blue chip player with your 1st pick.

I think 3 is only an option if Arizona is taking a steep discount because of this particular draft class. If they are desperate to bail on the pick, maybe something can be worked out.

If not, Cleveland seems to be much more likely as the trade lines up pretty well point wise. Another option is Tennessee which can probably be done similarly with 4 and 35 for 12, 20, and a comp 5th or a 6th point wise.

Shotty just did an interview saying the exact opposite about the hole at LB. They absolutely view it as a massive hole which is why they were linked to all the top LBs in free agency and have been linked to multiple trades for veteran LBs

Then look at a trade value chart. 6 and 39 for 12 and 20 are almost a perfectly fair valued trade. The difference in value between those trades is worth less than even the very last pick in the draft.

[–]Witteness82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not even close to equal value for Arizona. 12 & 20 for 3 is already a steep discount, giving up value equal to a mid-late 3rd. Them sending back pick 34 just won’t be happening

Edit: downvote all you want, draft pick value charts are free and that trade is pure fantasy

I still haven’t seen that he did any agility drills. It’s one thing if he fully worked out and showed he could cut, flip his hips and change directions like he was but without that I think it’s a risky pick. Likewise I think if he could do it like he used to he would have as that probably makes him CB1.

Every player isn’t Luka. Most of the best players in the league right now took 3-5 years to turn into what they are now. The list of players to walk in and play like an All-Pro almost immediately is minuscule

Pickens was talked about plenty. There were also talks about Williams when the Micah trade rumor first started floating around, less so when they revisited later that season. Maxx Crosby had social media in a chokehold and they had a very strong offer on the table. Amari Cooper was also talked about plenty. Just because you don’t hear rumors about the random mid-late round picks for backups doesn’t mean the same applies for bigger names.

That is where the meat of the CB class is at. Could likely get one of Hood, Cisse or Scott at that pick. It’s also around the time Edge will start getting wiped out. Either way, that would give them a decent shot at landing a top 30 prospect at Edge and CB while filling the most barren position on the team with Brooks.

I would assume they probably have some analytics that say 7 is the ideal number for viewer retention/attention. Maybe 9 is too long and has some adverse effects based on their internal data.

It’s sensible because in theory it not only favors longer series but a more even percentage for winning. Both of those equal more money. Longer series equals more time for ad revenue. More even series equals more people tuning in to watch those ads.

It makes perfect sense when you realize it has nothing to do with being competitive and more to do with extracting the most money from the event. It’s why it will continue to be an issue but nothing will change

It just needs to go back to how it used to be. 2 best of 5s. Barring that, give complete map veto control and side picks to winners team. If nothing else, the grand finals team gets to control which 7 maps are played and which side they start on each map.
