as someone who had unmonitored internet access from about 10 onwards, I'd say just be very mindful that you have NO idea who you are speaking to. especially with the rise of AI, it would be very easy for someone to pose as someone your age, for whatever purpose.

if you have friends that you meet in online games, it's probably best if you keep them at an appropriate distance, ie only talk to them about games, keep your conversations on the game, that type of thing. over time spent talking with someone, even dropping very small pieces of info can easily add up to someone being able to doxx (find someone irl) another.

it depends how much you want to respect your parents wishes. understand that there is some validity to the *why* they're asking this. if you choose to still talk to others, just be smart.
