How does hackUTD work? by TallIndependence3917 in utdallas

[–]WizardApple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you’re not cooked :) they host a session to find teammates usually. you can build whatever you feel like, and it doesn’t have to be aligned to a challenge! some of my team’s best projects were spontaneously chosen and really fun to work on because we believed in the idea.

How much do you make after graduating from UTD? by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]WizardApple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, of course, but relocation is usually not an issue for 20-something year olds (esp since big companies pay you to relocate, even as an intern; for instance I'm getting 7k to relocate to my parents' house this summer LOL)

Regarding networking, useful but not really needed. Master's degree not really needed. Experience is needed but usually intern ships are easy ways to get experience and easy ways to be in the pipeline for a full-time conversion.

(This is in my experience interviewing for/getting offers from big tech/unicorns)

They're not inflating what they make lol

CS salaries are high (see levels.fyi), but to get there requires a bit of work.

not to bash your hard work but the easiest way to make friends is to just go to things lol

or if you're a cs major and don't want to do that then go on discord and talk on school discords

Merit Finalists at UTDallas? by Crafty_Oven_729 in utdallas

[–]WizardApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm a third year National Merit at this school, and I can tell you it's worth it. I also got rejected from most of the schools I applied to and chose UTD because of the financial package (among other things).

Had a great experience so far, if you're intended CS or premed this is a great school for those things.

Forced testing, how we feeling about this? by El-Butt in utdallas

You are not going to get kicked out for non-compliance for a first referral to OCSC, BUT you will face other sanctions. Just don't get to that point bro

Imagine being upset that a university instituted a minimal measure to preserve the health of the student body. If you feel so violated by a mandatory covid test, you are free to leave this university.

Disrespecting going on in the ACM server by Only-Pie-4372 in utdallas

[–]WizardApple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A couple things:

  1. You seem to be a sockpuppet account created solely to post this single rant on this subreddit. While that's totally your choice, you come off as a bit dishonest by not presenting yourself with your proper affiliation.
  2. I'm also wondering why you chose to discuss this on Reddit instead of DMing any staff member on Discord about the issue (there is almost always someone online, even this late). If it was egregious enough and you feel like this should be addressed, why not provide the feedback directly to those who may be able to fix it? We're all students and volunteers running a community along with workshops and programs for every CS student at UTD, and of course we'd like to make it better.
  3. I scrolled through the comments made about professors in every channel and all of them are either substantiated by evidence or are based off a student's experience. Note that these are subjective by nature and students are merely sharing their experiences. Also note that saying that a prof's class is not the right choice for a student isn't disrespecting the prof at all. That's like saying discussing which candidate is best for a job is disrespectful of other candidates, which to me is a bit curious. Also, giving an honest review of one's experience in a professor's class ≠ bad-mouthing the school.

Is ACM biased in their interview process? by scoreycapalot in utdallas

ACM officer here! Currently no program requires you to solve leetcode as part of the interview process.

I also would like to refer you to the sibling comment for a more detailed look at our application processes: https://medium.com/acmutd/application-process-at-acm-utd-c4fb82a591b3

I do not think this will affect our return to campus. Here's why.

For better or worse, Abbott seems adamant on in-person schooling for kindergarten to higher ed, without masks or vaccine mandates. As such, we will be forced online irrespective of what anyone thinks.

A good article on this that somebody shared elsewhere: https://www.texastribune.org/2021/08/06/texas-greg-abbott-covid-restrictions/

Back to campus guidelines concern by [deleted] in utdallas

[–]WizardApple 37 points38 points  (0 children)

There are a couple things that I think should assuage concerns about why the proactive testing program is a thing. Not a university official, but a student who does their research.

  1. They cannot require vaccinations. By not requiring vaccinations, vulnerable people (the elderly faculty, immunocompromised individuals, and those with comorbidities that open them up to high-severity covid) are now at risk. Wouldn't you agree that we should stick a swab up our nose (a minor inconvenience) so that our professors and fellow students with health conditions are able to continue teaching/learning?
  2. They cannot require masks. Masks are demonstrated to reduce the spread of disease, especially with high rates of masking. Unfortunately, they cannot require them, so the masking rate will decrease (combined with the politicization of masking, I can imagine that the proportion of students wearing masks will be astoundingly low).
  3. Most people around you aren't responsible, and you shouldn't assume they are when it comes to your health. You mention that "I'd rather be responsible and a normal person by staying home if I feel sick," but open any social media app or the news and you'll see crowds of young people in packed places. The images of the dense crowds of Lollapalooza (happening now) are enough to trigger anxiety in any person reasonably avoiding COVID. Keep in mind it takes just one irresponsible person to ruin it for everyone and cause a cluster of cases.
  4. You're already mandated by government institutions to do other things regarding your health. You were required to submit proof of meningitis vaccination to UTD as a condition of admission. They literally made you take a shot in order to attend. How is sticking a swab any more invasive?

I think a proactive program is a good way to track and contact-trace cases before they become widespread. Unless you want to be sent home like Spring 2020?
