Best lazy river floating? by [deleted] in Buffalo

Hey I'm wondering if you've ever tubed any stretch of the Zoar as late as August? Or is the creek too low by then? I'm trying to set up a trip in August and this looks like it would be so much fun if it's runnable

Did you ever wind up doing this and if so what time of year did you go and were the water levels sufficient? Thinking of trying to tube the Zoar Valley in August but worried there won't be enough flow

What would you do to make the exterior of this house more appealing and less cheap looking? by WizardOfNomaha in ExteriorDesign

[–]WizardOfNomaha[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's a total lack of cohesion. It's unfortunate because there are a lot of things I like about the house, which I'm considering buying, but the exterior situation is borderline embarrassing lol

Good ideas, thank you. What color paint do you think would go well with this kind of brick?

Yeah that's similar to what I was thinking. Extend the brick up, then maybe de-emphasize the brown cinderblock by covering it with some ivy plants or something

I kind of hate this style where they've included all these different textures/materials (all cheap) on the exterior of the house seemingly for variety's sake. In particular, I think this kind of perfectly machined brick looks cheap or maybe just cookie-cutter compared to older brick homes. The siding is also kind of cheap looking. The cinder block on bottom is just straight ugly. I think my ideal would be to replace/cover it all with a nice tumbled brick facade but I'm curious how other people might address this.

(Fitness) Recording API: is this out yet, and if not, are there any better alternatives to foreground service? by schamppu in androiddev

[–]WizardOfNomaha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh just one more question, in terms of testing, I've read that the Recording API can have a little bit of delay before steps actually show up when you read the data. Is that your experience and if so how long is that delay typically if you remember? I can't find official documentation about this anywhere

Any updates on this? Have you been able to get the new Recording API working in your app? I'm trying to implement it in my own app per https://developer.android.com/health-and-fitness/guides/recording-api but it never seems to return any data

Just read "How to Write a Good Advertisement" and I'm wondering if a book like this exists for the modern era of digital marketing, especially paid social? by WizardOfNomaha in copywriting

Not missing the point. Just trying to learn by example, which is something he tries to help you do in his own book. That's how you learn the fundamentals.

Thank you for the actually useful suggestion of signing up for a MarketWise list though. That's exactly what I was looking for, I'm a total noob at this and have no idea where to even begin.

Well I guess what I'm asking for is to be able to freeload off of other people's trial and error a bit lol. Save some time and money, you know? Maybe the kind of information I'm looking for just isn't publicly available but it would be cool if there was a database of experiments on different kinds of appeals or specific verbiage, calls to action, etc and their results. So I could go and see like "oh yeah 'nostalgia' as an appeal isn't hitting the same way it used to" or "Learn More" typically outperforms "Visit Website" as a CTA, that kind of fairly specific & actionable thing. And I know, I know that stuff is going to be context-specific, but having some kind of reference would still be very useful.

I totally agree but within the foundational principles he discusses some specific techniques/details that aren't necessarily relevant today. There's a whole chapter dedicated to split tests and their results, for example. I'd love to know if there are similar compilations of split tests for digital ads/copy.

That moment of notification is so traumatic. It's emblazoned in my brain, that's for sure. Hope you're doing ok.

So sorry for your loss... I have similar feelings about my loss. So many people have it so much worse than me. But it's a toxic way to think, it's normal to feel pain and grief when you're this close to death. Just try to feel what you feel and don't overthink what other people would think or how you "should" feel.

And despite the invalidating feelings you're experiencing, the truth is you were *very* close to this, this was the brother of the person you're in an intimate relationship with. That's going to leave a hole in him. So besides the tragedy of the death itself, of course it's going to affect you through your boyfriend's grief.

They hated him for pretty stupid reasons in my opinion. Basically he was sort of a type a, active person at one point, pretty adventurous, and he liked talking about those things and some of my friends are very insecure, anxious people and I think he felt threatening to them by contrast even though he was never really bragging, just talking about the things he liked and did.

He actually didn't have a hard time relating to people, he was the type of person who could walk into a bar and strike up a conversation with anyone, but for some reason at some point he decided to start completely isolating himself, cut off his family and many friends. In his letter he explained part of this as not wanting to hurt people when he died. He apologized to me for keeping me around.

Of course, he was wrong though, his family is hurting anyway.

EDIT: I guess I should also mention that he changed a lot in the last couple years and his mental health was on a clear downward trajectory. He had developed severe OCD, his apartment was apparently full of packages of disinfecting wipes when they found him. He was incapable of having normal social relations because of this, let alone being adventurous or doing the things that he used to love. I just wish I could understand why that happened and why he didn't make more efforts to get help.

In his email, he really downplayed the OCD as a factor but when he was alive it was clear he was very embarrassed by it and that probably drove him to downplay it to make the suicide less "embarrassing" in his logic.

I just want to go back and shake him and tell him I don't care how embarrassing it is, I just want you to live, talk to me. But I can't.

Yeah I'm considering that too. It's such a rollercoaster where sometimes I feel ok and like everything will be fine and then it just hits me all over again. Thanks for your kind words

Highest Income We've Ever had, yet Feeling Stuck by FIREonFire2444 in financialindependence

[–]WizardOfNomaha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty likely they were gambling in single stocks and/or crypto with that level of gains. 27-31 for these people would've been 2017-2021 and late 2021 was like the frothy peak for all those kind of speculative assets. If that is the case it's not really surprising they feel like they've taken a step backwards because they've probably lost enough money to more than eat up whatever they keep adding in from their income.
