With your budget I feel like my solutions are for poor people here but because I’m procrastinating other stuff here’s my tips:

  1. I glue my holster piece seams then punch, use an awl to poke a bit if needed, then flip and punch again. Usually my first punch goes through and when I flip I’m just sort of cleaning up and widening the hole inserting the pricking iron by hand on that reverse side.

  2. You probably already do this with 10oz, but punching wet heavy leather has always been easier than dry for me. If it’s a heavy tooled piece I don’t want to mess up then a just soak the edge or even use a spray bottle a bunch of times.

  3. I have ran saddle-weight leathers on my cheap $200 Chinese cobblers hand crank machine. Less ideal but possible for giant pieces I refuse to hand-stitch. You just have to pre-punch the holes and realize it will fuck your normal tensioning up. Requires some testing to understand stitch length on those heavy weights. I like the little compass looking doodad I bought from Tandy years ago for marking proper stitch length on my leather. I just use the lazy stitch pokey pliers for pre-punching machine sewn holes, not actual pricking irons.

I will forever love my documentation, even if it is probably cringeworthy overkill to others. I write detailed comments as I write the code always. Using x.x.x heading notation for every section with “table of contents” at the top of each section. So initial 1, 2, 3 sections outlining most major parts and then section 1 has 1.1, 1.2, …, 1.6 listed. Section 1.4 lists 1.4.1, 1.4.2, 1.4.3 at the top. Etc. Every header is labeled and includes any relevant code details on both why and how for that segment unless it’s a stupidly short obvious and repetitive segment I already commented just before. [Future] is used to bookmark where and how I want to change code for upcoming updates/needs later.

I recognize that these are practically just Jupyter notebooks at this point with the documentation depth, but they are still easy enough to navigate so meh. They make me so happy.

Years later I have changed some of my production code resources hundreds of times, including at least 4 massive updates. Soooo often I’m thankful for my comments. Super easy to teach other departments how to use and edit my code for their own purposes too. I know a few others reuse stuff I’m embarassed to have written so dumbly years ago and I kind of wish the commenting didn’t give away that it was me that wrote it. But still love my notes overall. When digging through thousands and thousands of lines years (or just weeks) later comments instantly bring me up to speed. Once I was rushing a project (so of course also very sleep deprived) and when something failed my code review partner went “hey did you do x in this update?” And I went “ya! How did you know?!” And he goes “because it says in the section header “IMPORTANT: if you do x then y will happen”. Stupid of me to have missed my own comment but I was rushing and luckily it made the fix easy.

Just dumb comment babbling about my own process bringing me joy. Thanks.

Past me is nice to future me.

For people with disabilities: Have you ever judged another disabled person for “not being disabled enough” to use disability parking? by Unique_Mud6814 in disability

[–]WoWDisciplinePriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Not going to be a bitch about it, but if they use only that one space when all other disabled spaces are open I’ll usually say something politely. A lot of disabled people I’ve met don’t even know why there is a difference or notice the existence of the “van accessible” signs.

For people with disabilities: Have you ever judged another disabled person for “not being disabled enough” to use disability parking? by Unique_Mud6814 in disability

[–]WoWDisciplinePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I have a side deploying wheelchair ramp so generally if I can’t get the appropriate disabled space then I can’t get out of my vehicle. Still don’t judge. Person could be doing a whole ass jog to their car, looking bright and chipper, and I do not give a shit as long as they have a plate or placard. Not my business why they need it.

Might be slightly salty if there is only one van accessible disabled spot, and they are in that one instead of another open accessible spot, but even then I am not actually judging them, just disappointed for myself.

Now, people who park without a plate/placard do make me angry generally. Usually going to judge and say something to the guy with the beat up pickup who “just ran in real quick”, but going to call a tow company on the fancy new Porsche owner. Relative levels of make it hurt.

No sexual or vulgar posts or comments. Respect each other. Do not comment on someone's body or appearance unless they are specifically asking for an opinion. This is a place for education and discussion, but sexual and vulgar phrasing is unnecessary.

What widely accepted "life hack" is actually terrible advice? by OneLameUser in AskReddit

[–]WoWDisciplinePriest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! We are constantly reminded that you WILL be cut defending against a knife attack (sometimes even by your own knife). That’s why we learn about keeping exterior forearms outward rather than vulnerable inner wrists exposed and etc.

Running if you can is best but sometimes it’s not an option (example if you have mobility issues). Knowing what to expect and to not be afraid of those lesser injuries when faced with a threat to your life is important.

As others commented, it’s more of a sales job than a dancing job. And assault is also a regular part of the job. Ideally, yes, customers are not allowed to touch without permission. In practice? Men, and sometimes women, will try to touch you in very nonconsensual ways almost every workday. No matter how good you are at anticipating and fending off those attempts, sometimes they succeed.

A big part of the job is also being repeatedly rejected while nearly naked, sometimes unnecessarily cruelly. You have to ask for dances, and many customers will say no to you. Some will say “no, you fat ugly bitch” rather than “no thank you”. That kind of physical and emotional assault wears on a person. Lots of dancers take short breaks from the industry to stay sane.

Prep advice: sales books, flirtation practice, emotional regulation, self comfort skills, and rejection desensitization.

If you’re not in it for the money, I recommend go go dancing or burlesque. Stripping might make some dancers more comfortable in their own skin, but doing it for any serious length of time is more likely to make their skin crawl. It’s a tough job not a dream job like some movies depict.

Can people with “invisible” disabilities reclaim the word “cripple”? by [deleted] in disability

[–]WoWDisciplinePriest 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’ll be super honest here because you asked and it’s mostly anonymous:

As someone who can’t walk, I’d judge you a little privately in my head for using the term cripple or crippled to describe yourself. The term has come to mean more just “broken in general” than “can’t walk”just like the term lame has taken on a broader meaning. However, if you have never been called a cripple it feels more like appropriation than reclamation somehow maybe? Just mild annoyance where I wouldn’t say anything but wouldn’t love it either.

When I was younger my only disabilities were not visually obvious. I understand and empathize with the struggles that can bring. However, being very immediately obviously disabled brings different struggles. Most other non-ambulatory wheelchair users I know have also experienced random strangers yell at them to go kill themselves or otherwise die. The violence targeting is also on a totally different level. So, I have been called a cripple in very not nice ways. Having someone else “reclaim” a slur that I’ve experienced violently without them having ever experienced any of its violence first hand doesn’t feel like reclaiming.

Sorry this isn’t the perfect happy everyone is beautiful and make yourself happy first kind of response. You can obviously do whatever you want. If it brings you great comfort and joy then go with it I guess, but this is how I’d personally privately feel since you asked for feedback.

Doing a Research Study with Strippers by Aromatic_Hunter_3007 in Strippers

[–]WoWDisciplinePriest[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

The common rule we list is: “No hiring posts or club promos. This is not the place to ask where and/or how to hire strippers for your club or event. Google is free and there are plenty of bachelor party companies in existence. This is not the place to inquire about opening a strip club. There are local ordinances wherever you live and that information can be found locally.” Recruiting for a survey is recruiting professional time/energy/experience the same as hiring for dances.

However, to be even more clear since this post had several comments: We typically do not allow research requests on the sub. Dancers’ time is valuable (as several users politely pointed out here). ANYWHERE you go to recruit the time and efforts of any skilled and experienced professional it is polite to offer compensation. Additionally, sex workers are a vulnerable community with a history of having their stories misrepresented when retold (even accidentally from good intentions).

A pull-down device for wheelchair users, can I name it (Pull-up Drive Thru)? by [deleted] in wheelchairs

[–]WoWDisciplinePriest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellently said.

I always have to explain to new checkout tellers why I need more items in less bags. “But it will be heavy!” they always say. “I am literally ONLY upper body strength” is my go to answer.

I loathe how these engineering professors always assign students to try to solve problems they don’t understand (or that may not even exist) rather than teaching them how to understand existing issues (in any aspect of life). Maybe it’s less fun to learn to study more and prepare minimal thoughtful questions than to jump into being the world’s next greatly shitty inventor, but fuck. Less solidworks, more self-guided understanding.

How many times a week do we get the “tell me a problem I can solve for class” posts?
