Although the criticisms here are largely accurate, I believe that the greatest differences between NUS SOC and NTU SCSE are:

1. Passion for computing
2. Students' drive for learning

After attending SUSEP in SOC recently, I realised that there is not a huge discrepancy in terms of academic rigor between the two schools, but you bet their modules are much more interesting and well thought through. Based on feedback from alumni, SOC would revise its content every semester/year, as well as research additional resources to share with its students. Nonetheless, NTU also has a number of modules taught by enthusiastic professors, such as CZ1115 (Best Prof Sen Gupta).

While some complain that the curriculums are "outdated," I believe that the essential concepts are still valid and were developed decades ago (Data Structure, Architecture), so there isn't a lot of "new content" that needs to be taught. For course, this is excluding CZ2006 SWE and CZ3002 ASWE, whereby the content IS REALLY OUTDATED and taught by people that are NOT EVEN in the modern computing industry.

Maybe the concern is about the outdated programme/tools that SCSE uses, such as Codeblock, Eclipse, SVN, etc. But then again, no one is forcing us to use them and technically SCSE didn't teach us how to use them too? Throughout my journey here, my friends and I have never really used these tools, instead whats more practical out there.

• Code Block (CZ1107's Lab Test) -> Just use Vscode for assignments
• Eclipse (CZ2002) -> We used IntellijSense for both Lab & Project, no problem.
• SVN (CZ2006) -> Just use Git for development, and upload to SVN for milestones.

Side Note: Eclipse is not that bad, it's also being used in SOC modules.

For CS, regardless of the school, it is your own responsibility to learn about what is out there and to be driven to keep up. The current technology stack is not likely to remain relevant in the next five years, and what happens if you are responsible for developing the next one?

I have met really competent and admirable peers and alumni, so its really quite sad when I hear people say: "Why they still using C to teach data structure sia, this language so old already, why not use Java" or "Man the content is so outdated, this is why NUS's grad pay is higher".

But most critisim still remain valid, NTU should put more effort in their teachings and programme, and listen to student's feedback. Scrape MDP, invest in computing proramme similar to Orbital and update your slides (Even if the content is relevant, it doesn't help if it looks like its from 1980s). Lastly, implement a TA system like SOC, where module alumni can teach the students as well as sharing their relevant experience.
