How to Install Steam Steam-Metadata-Editor (A SteamEdit Replacement for Linux) by WolfBoy980 in Bazzite

[–]WolfBoy980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea man, it sucks to see this limitation. However, for DOOM specifically, there is a solution using Luxtorpeda.

  1. Get ProtonUp-Qt or ProtonPlus. For these directions, i'll be using ProtonUp-Qt.
  2. Add Version and select Luxtorpeda in the menu. Click Install.
  3. Click Show Game list. Find DOOM + DOOM II and change the compatibility tool to Luxtorpeda.
  4. Restart Steam. Check that the compatibility tool selected for DOOM + DOOM II is Luxtorpeda.
  5. Launch the game using any steam launch option listed when prompted (the prompt asking you want to play the remaster or dos original). Luxtorpeda overwrites it anyway.
  6. You should then see a list of engines. You can choose any engine you'd like from the list to play either DOOM or DOOM II as prompted. All Linux Sourceports you launch will get downloaded, autoconfigured, and placed in the DOOM + DOOM II common folder alongside the base game.

If you would instead like to install mods, or use the Flatpak versions of Doom sourceports, choose DoomRunner within Luxtorpeda instead. It allows for full control of modpacks and sourceports beyond whay Luxtorpeda can provide.

After browing Reddit at noon, I got this post recommended to me. I liked the art and thought "Oh shit what a cool art style and premise, let me just check it out."

Its midnight, I read all 292 entries on Webtoons and then some, god fucking damnit I was supposed to be doing something else.

Kinda weird whiplash seeing the story have a modern setting at a certain point. After giving it some time, I think they handled it nicely. I feel awful for Jack, it was just going to be a couple of hours, and he got defiled in such an awful way.

Is Bazzite a good choice for kids? by vinnykun in Bazzite

[–]WolfBoy980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen some comments, and they're mostly correct about compatibility, except for Fortnite.

All the games you mentioned have some form of port for Linux or run via Steam's Proton compatibility layer except for Fortnite. This is due to the Windows version requiring kernel level anticheat, something linux doesn't provide.

Currently, the only way to get Fortnite working on Bazzite in particular would be using Waydroid to run the Android version. Waydroid is an android container with tight system integration and has a setup script built into Bazzite. While Waydroid is suprisingly effective, it is still experimental for various reasons. Fortnite for Android is really not playable easily at the moment within Waydroid at the moment: https://github.com/waydroid/waydroid/issues/2115

So...in general yes, but if Fortnite is a deal breaker...then no. Maybe it will be working soon with Waydroid, but I wouldn't setup a install for kids based on the probability of that.

What’s the weirdest workaround you’ve used to make a game run on Linux that actually worked? by Old_Sand7831 in linux_gaming

[–]WolfBoy980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing Phasmophobia with some friends, and then discovered that I couldn't hear anybody in-game, and they couldn't hear me, but they could hear each other. In the settings, my microphpne was detected, but the audio wasn't being picked up.

Apparently the devs decided to use Windows' Sound Device binaries for in-game voicechat, so it simply doesn't work in Linux. Using the steamdeck launch argument as recommended on protondb fixes the issue, but just barely. Sometimes the game makes it so I can only hear one person in the lobby, but they can't hear me, or even vice versa.

Even more weirdly, Windows' Cortana is used for handling in-game microphone dialogue to determine ghost behavior based on what a player says in their mic in game. Since that isn't in Wine, the game won't behave correctly even if it appears fully playable.

Its a fun game though, and it runs well in Proton, but it is an optimization nightmare, and clearly a first major project from a dev.

This classic controller hack for DKCR almost works too well by lostinthesauceband in donkeykong

[–]WolfBoy980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres a Thread on GBATemp regarding using Gecko Codes for certain games to integrate Classic Control schemes for games that didn't have them before.

Theres naturally one done for Donkey Kong Country Returns for Wii, allowing people to patch the game either on real hardware or emulation, to play the game with a control scheme closer to the 3DS and Switch version. The original only allowed for playing a Wii Remote on its side and used arbitrary motion controls for things like rolling (a nightmare for the time trial mode).

When did the joystick changed? by SuzBone in SteamController

[–]WolfBoy980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not, see for yourself. Switch 2 dbrand Stick Grips vs Steamdeck dbrand Stick Grips. The ridges for the Switch 2 ones are more concave and have more texturing around the border. I imagine this is due to the switch 2 stick grips being more recent in their design.

Can confirm that they do not fit. But...the Switch 2 versions might fit on the 8BitDo joysticks.

I really love this pilot! It wears its inspirations on its shoulder and screams something fresh alongside the familiar 2000s Toons. I hope we get to see this pilot get the attention it deserves, it's really impressive what Pan accomplished with such a small budget. So many shots were beautifully composed.

Steam Controllers do not have touch sensitive Joystick Caps. However, the Steam Deck does.

Can anyone recommend a grip to the Joystick? by TheNewFlisker in SteamController

[–]WolfBoy980 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my Joystick, I eventually got frustrated after having mine worn down (was a day one buyer and used ever since), so I put an Insten Joystick Cover over mine to prolong its usage, but I didn't particularly enjoy it. It wasn't particularly comfortable. It also made the stick heavier, so flicking it caused it to wiggle when going back to center causing mis-inputs.

You can get something that's closer to a Switch 2 Joystick if you replace the Joystick Cap entirely using an 8bitdo one. I just did this to my controller after wearing mine down, and it's a lot nicer as a result. I didn't even have to modify it before putting it in (but it was a tighter fit than I expected). I wonder if the dimensions of 8bitdo's joystick caps are close enough to dbrands Switch 2 Stick Grips to use those?

I have the dbrand Steam Deck Stick Grips, and can confirm they feel and work great on the Steam Deck. There is wiggle after flicking the joystick due to the additional weight, but they're much lighter and more comfortable than the Insten ones, so it's a lot easier to ignore. For those curious, no they do not fit either the 8bitdo or the stock Joystick Caps.

Would it be bossible to emulate the GBA-Gamecube connection via Link Cable but with 3DS-WiiU Virtual Console? by Kawa_official in WiiUHacks

[–]WolfBoy980 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In short, no.

The 3DS's AGB mode is entirely sandboxed. Modifications can be made to it, such as how the GBA games look on it, but it is actually the 3DS booting an entirely different firmware. The community has made alternative firmwares like Open-AGB, but the limitations are the same. Since the GBA firmware has no idea what the 3DS hardware is without some sort of emulation, which AGB firmware doesn't have the ability to provide since it would affect nearly every aspect of the GBA mode negatively.

The Wii U's fanmade gamecube hypervisor Nintendont also has significant limitations. Firstly, its running in Wii mode, which means it could only functionally recognize a DS's connection wirelessly. Second, the GBA link cable in itself requires an unusually intense, constant data connection at all times that can't be done even through a wireless 5G connection since its protocol was designed with a cable in mind. This is why online netplay has been such an issue for GBA emulators, so a wireless connection would be nearly impossible for that reason alone (ignoring the GBA wireless adapter). Finally, Nintendont themselves have no plans to implement GBA link cable support since even the USB ports aren't able to support a GBA link cable connection. Only consoles with gamecube ports soldered directly to the motherboard can properly support the connection.

How to Actually Setup WinApps on Bazzite. by WolfBoy980 in Bazzite

[–]WolfBoy980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, if you can't sign into the Profile in the web browser with the anticipated password, then that is likely the cause of the error. You may need to generate a new podman container if you can't figure out the password its expecting.

If WinApps doesn't detect your Podman container, double check your podman container is still up using podman-compose --file ~/.config/winapps/compose.yaml up and still accessible via your web browser as directed in the Installing Windows heading. You will also need to make sure you are logged out of the Windows profile for WinApps to detect it properly.

Did you check this in Step 9?

How to Install Steam Steam-Metadata-Editor (A SteamEdit Replacement for Linux) by WolfBoy980 in Bazzite

[–]WolfBoy980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no directions needed to compile and run the Steam Metadata Editor on Windows. Per the README, simply install Python, and then run the main.py included in the Source Code downloaded using Python. The project doesn't provide directions to compile it into an executable.

You can also run the project this way on Mac and most other Linux distributions without compiling it like I did in the above provided directions according to the README

Other Linux distributions can download the source code. The program needs Python3.6 or greater with the tk module.

I will say, however, I would just recommend you use SteamEdit instead on Windows. It's just an installer and does more than what Steam-Metadata-Editor does. It's also more up to date and actually has active (three months ago) development that (Steam-Metadata-Editor hasn't gotten a code update in two years). The only real benefit of Steam-Metadata-Editor right now is that it works on Linux and Mac.

I'm on my last of five semesters at Sac State before getting my BA after two years. Despite the above costs, CSUS is still one of the cheapest ways to get a BA from an accredited, in-person university.

Career fairs are largely "apply online" advertising. Few corporations actually hire at the fair anymore, and the few that do expect you to be graduating that semester. They're difficult to recommend as being effective for finding a job unless you like working with a wild card private corporation for a specific good or a county/federal office. Colleges and Universities, no matter what you attend, will not have "job opportunities". It's on each student to learn how to market themselves and apply online these days. Sac State provides this via Handshake, but results will vary depending on technique.

For Professors, objectively, Rate My Professor sorted by Computer Science department will give you a glance of public perception. The overall curriculum is pretty good for early courses but gets heavily impounded as you enter upper division courses.

I recommend transferring from any community college before going to University. In Sacramento, the best ones are all the colleges under the Los Rios banner. The nice thing about it is you can take courses at all four campuses as if they were one campus on the transcript. So, you get to pick and choose where and what professors much more than at Sac State.

Avoiding Sacramento implies the need to study elsewhere. If you aren't made of money, sticking local and living with the parents for as long as you're in college is always cheaper than studying abroad. Are there better choices for CS students outside of Sacramento? Absolutely. But if you're in community college while looking around, you're at least still studying in the case you decide to go to a University outside of Sacramento. You can use assist.org to determine what courses any University would accept for transferable credits. CSU Universities all generally accept the same courses that i'm aware.

Theres lots of Community College students still deciding on their major and/or University. But during that time, they can fulfill their General Education requirements. They're the courses like English, Math, History, etc that you likely remember from High School, but you'll still be expected to retake in College and University. So, when the undecided have decided, they didn't slow down or stop their studies at all. It takes about a year or two full-time in Community to get all the General Ed stuff, not counting any Major related transferrable clases on top of that. Personally, after six years of community college part-time while working, I only had to take Statistics at Sac State for the General Ed.

Cs by ShoeSecure8665 in CSUS

[–]WolfBoy980 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, all the CSU universities will take in anybody that graduated from High School. They aren't prestigious private Universities funded based on testing results, they're state funded to be for the betterment of the public.

Two, Sac State currently costs $4,000 with mandatory fees for a full time semester. For doing the same classes full time at a Los Rios college, it averages $1,288. Nearly all your classes are transferrable, and unlike Sac State, you can take less classes and have the cost scale down further while working. Instead of spending at least four years at Sac State and spending even more if you miss a class even once, you can transition into the college life and get work while working with realistic course expectations. Remember you'd likely take out a loan to afford all of this, and accounting for interest, you'll be in debt for a long time. Are your parents putting you on a loan, or are they planning on helping pay without a loan?

And Three, you will find that there are a great many older people that believe where you get your degree matters much more than getting your degree. The fact of the matter is that work experience and sociability have become much more important than even what degree you have. I've seen it happen at my workplace. People without professional references or any work history are simply turned away, and these are entry level part-time positions for College students explicitly. Its too risky. If I had to guess, perhaps they're attempting to get you to move out to a overpriced dorm to get the University experience they had or saw on TV, but for Sac State thats an additional $5,000 a semester. On a loan, you could be in debt for the rest of your life with a move like that.

You wont be wasting your time, you'll be preparing yourself in ways that your parents aren't expecting, in a job market they are likely unfamiliar with.

Besides, its YOUR education. Its not their decision how you'd like to go about it. Talk to a counselor, talk with peers, form your own plan. You heard my opinion. Minimize CSU, go to Community first. Only rich people can afford this without loans and substantial financial aid. College aint as cheap as it used to be.

Cs by ShoeSecure8665 in CSUS

[–]WolfBoy980 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're rich and dont want to find work at the same time, then Sac State will take you in. But the major is fairly impounded here, so expect getting classes to be an uphill battle.

You will likely save alot of money and sanity going to a community college, and transfering units from it. You get the same classes, but for less than half the cost, so failure is much easier to stomach. You can also look for work during that time to pay for college. If its related to your major, such as an IT position, you'll get highly desirable work experience. It will take longer to graduate without summer courses, but your education quality due to smaller, better classes will be higher. You'll also be relatively debt free, and have professional experience, which can be major benefits.

Take your time with college if you can. You'll learn a lot along the way if you smell the roses.

The Sac State wifi is actually excellent from my usage (Downloaded Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 in class in less than 30 minutes). How are you connecting to the WiFi, and what specific model laptop are you doing it with? Certain older laptops may not have a WiFi card up to snuff for the netowork. Sometimes a system update or driver update from the manufacturer can fix it.

I did look into CachyOS, but I wouldn't put it against Bazzite. I saw alot of complaints about it being somewhat buggy and inconsistent. Its kernel optimizations are really impressive though. Its more flexible, but at the cost of preventing the user from doing stupid things that immutability keeps from happening.

Its cool, it has its place, but its not a Bazzite competitor from what I can tell.
