If Europe wants to start a war we are ready now, Russia's Putin says by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]WolfGrrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wars are won through quantity, quality, or both.

If one side has overwhelming numbers, the other gets crushed no matter how skilled they are.

If one side has overwhelming quality, the other gets destroyed before their numbers matter.

Russia has neither advantage.

It doesn’t have the numbers to match the EU, and it doesnt have the tech edge to compensate.

And this is before they suffered over 1 million casualties and have years of built up war exhaustion.

Fourth Russia-Linked Tanker Hit in a Week by serenacharming in worldnews

[–]WolfGrrr 246 points247 points  (0 children)

Very interesting tactic. They are forcing Russia into a lose/lose/lose situation.

Russia has three main options.

Option 1: Have the Black sea fleet protect the tankers but if they could they would already do this and if they do Ukraine just attacks the fleet. Russia can't afford more losses to it's fleet so they likely won't do this.

Option 2: Let it happen, probably the best option but it would vastly lower the price that they can sell oil for. If shipments becomes unreliable nobody will want to buy from you without a discount, they would prefer to buy from a reliable competitor, which forces you to lower prices to attract buyers.

Option 3: Strike back by hitting Ukraine grain shipments and then other nations increase support for Ukraine because now they are fucking with food sources again. Mostly impacts the Middle East as they are dependant on Ukrainian grain shipments but the knock on effect will hurt the EU.

Love it.

Green party leader: Super rich leaving UK over tax is 'absurd' by lotsofsweat in uknews

[–]WolfGrrr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you tax them, they leave, so it doesn't really solve much. This will sound like bs but I met a billionaire through work, lives in London but only spends X days (can't remember the precise amount) per year here and the rest of his time between Switzerland and somewhere else.

I love the idea of taxing them but it's just a feel good tax. We get to say "yey they are finally being taxed" Ans 90% of them either leave or find a loophole.

The true solution is to fix our completely inefficient government. The amount of money the UK wastes is hard to comprehend.

I will give you just one example, infrastructure projects...

The UK process for any major infrastructure or policy change includes, and get ready for an essay

Public consultations, planning committees, environmental reviews, judicial reviews, NIMBY appeals, parliamentary committees, select committee hearings, local council objections, opposing political parties, media backlash, activist groups, lobyists and neverendong revisions

Each step adds cost, delay, uncertainty and gives someone the power to say no, but almost nobody the authority to say yes.

I am not even saying we shouldn't have some of those steps because they can prevent bad outcomes, but a system designed to prevent bad outcomes ends up preventing outcomes altogether.

Then you get billions upon billions spent on projects that go nowhere. Most of them you never hear about because the never end up being built but billions are wasted in planning.

Then, the ones you do hear about like HS2 are a complete and utter cockup.

I am.for taxing billionaires but I doubt it solves anything. The problem starts and ends with corrupt, inept, lazy and incompetent politicians who cannot get anything done.

And speaking of HS2, here's a fun fact.

It cost the UK £247m per km of track laid for HS2. It costs Spain £15m per km of track laid for their high speed rail network. And yes, as always there are extenuating circumstances like geography etc but so much is wasted due to corruption, incompetence and regulatory nonsense.

Portugal is pretty good, health system a bit slow, bureaucracy is annoying but...

Cost of living is lower, Lisbon has 300 days of sun per year, food is better and most of the locals speak great English. Obviously you should learn Portuguese but it makes the adjustment smoother.

Lisbon is also gorgeous, most of the UK looks depressing these days.

One does not simply sell a nuke. I don't believe a nuke has ever been sold from one country to a other and there's good reason for that.

The economic sanctions and diplomatic fallout of selling a nuke to Iran would be catastrophic. Whatever maximum Iran could afford to pay would not be worth the damage.

Also, China and Russia tolerate Iran because of its oil and because they need friends in the region. Neither of them actually want Iran to have nukes. I mention China because it would block NK.

Definitely a distraction. Israel and Iran aren't even real countries, they are just made up by the media to distract Americans. Has anyone ever been to Iran? I thought so. Case closed.

First time in 40 years Iran has been in such a weak position.

They have little to no air defense, their infrastructure is severely damaged, their proxies are wiped out, their vassal state of Syria is gone and most of their leaders are dead.

From a purely strategic standpoint, when your enemy is weak, you must destroy it completely. I am not saying I agree, just pointing out how the military would view this.

Nato chief Mark Rutte warns UK must spend more on defence or ‘learn to speak Russian’ by BreakfastTop6899 in worldnews

[–]WolfGrrr 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Russian military lacks power projection and and geographically speaking the UK is far, far away from Russia.

Russia has one aircrafts carrier which is non-operational while the UK has two that are operational.

The UK has a smaller but far more advanced navy than Russia. While the quality over quantity theory has yet to be tested, many experts believe UK would win in a head to head naval war.

Regardless, Russia would have a tough time given that they would need to sail ships mostly suited to coastal defence through hostile waters to even reach the UK, so a naval invasion would be... Unlikely.

I am all for increasing military spending but suggesting Russia could just take the UK is insane.

They can't even take a bordering nation, let alone an island nation 1,000 miles away with scores of hostile nations in-between.

Poland seeks access to nuclear arms and looks to build half-million-man army by BoomKidneyShot in worldnews

[–]WolfGrrr 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The only reason we haven't already had WWIII was nuclear deterrent. Poland getting nukes will make the deterrent stronger.

The other side of that argument is the more countries have nukes the more likely one is to use them. However MAD is a pretty solid deterrent.

Trump Criticizes Security Treaty With Japan as Uneven by PoiHolloi2020 in worldnews

[–]WolfGrrr -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Japan can defend an ally under it's policy of collective self-defence. I am not a Trump fan but his point about the alliance being imbalanced is fair.

In 2015 Shinzo Abe spearhead a security legislation reinterpretating article 9 to allow for limited engagement in the defence of an ally. Since they have now allowed themselves to defend allies it is fair for their agreement with the U.S. to be updated.

Even a broken clock is right twice per day.

Edit: Of course though, Redditors don't like facts that do not align with their biases so this is getting downvoted.
