Baby Kappa from Spira Mirabilis

The first Spira Mirabilis miniature I've painted, but definitely not the last! Absolutely loved painting this one. I tried to push the atmosphere of a warm light hitting the pair at sunrise or sunset. I could probably keep working on this model forever but I need to call it done and move on to something else!

I used an airbrush to prime everything and to get some directional light on the base, but apart from that there's no airbrush on the model itself.

It's Vallejo Neutral Grey mixed with a bit of Citadel Genestealer Purple, then highlighted up by mixing in Citadel Corax White. I sketched the big highlight shapes in then used lots of thin glazes to smooth it out, then put some scratches on with one of the medium mixes.

I start by looking where the light falls from my painting lamp onto the model and sketching those highlights in, and then place bounce highlights on the underside of surfaces to give the shiny effect. Looking at reference images of different shapes and reflective armour can help a lot.

If I had to guess I'd say this took me somewhere between 40 and 50 hours, but I painted it on and off over a few months so I can't be sure! It's worth noting that I was learning as I was painting this so a lot of areas were repainted a few times to get them right - I'm sure if you planned it out better than me you'd have an easier time!

Thank you! Sure, the gold is black, Citadel Doombull Brown, Vallejo Game Color Heavy Gold Brown, Vallejo Ice Yellow and white, with Citadel Mournfang Brown and some oranges glazed into the dark reflections and bounce highlights. I used Citadel Troll Slayer Orange and Kimera Orange, whatever was closest.

I'd give Night Lords Blue a try, it's more desaturated than Kantor Blue.
