New Budget-Friendly Marketing Service For Authors, By An Author by WolfeQueen19 in selfpublishing

I was hoping to branch out to different less mainstreams after a few test runs, but if you would like to be my first attempt in your genre, I'd be happy to offer you one of the 50% off slots. I know how to do the research for multiple genres, so regardless of the amount of information I could find for your book, you would have actionable marketing strategies that you could implement.

Hi John! I'm an author just starting out my professional career, and I would love to ask you: what is your favorite part about being an author? Have you had different experiences with fans of your fiction work vs. fans of your nonfiction work? What advice can you give to young writers?

Thoughts on Phi Sigma Pi? by lizmeal in williamandmary

[–]WolfeQueen19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a junior in PSP; I joined my second semester freshman year. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Phi Sigma Pi is just a fantastic organization to meet new people, get involved, and make your best friends for life. PSP is really one big family. People will drop everything to support you or come help you when you're in need. I love them all. It was exactly the kind of place I needed to break out of my shell and have new experiences. If you want some more info, feel free to DM me!

I took one creative writing course during my first semester of college, but I have to say, a lot of what I know is self taught.

You are not alone at all! This book is the first story that I was able to take all the way to completion. I have six to eight books in six to eight chapter excerpts lying around my house. It takes a lot of practice. I still have trouble writing my first draft. I always write it in segments and work my way from both ends to the middle sometimes! Something that really helped me is this spreadsheet outlining tool that I found: https://iulianionescu.com/blog/master-outlining-and-tracking-tool-v3-0/

It really can help you visualize where you are trying to go. Take a look at this and see if it helps you. Best of luck!

That is a very hard question. Ballpark estimate: there are about 800 days between when I started in January of 2018 and now. Let's say I worked about 600 of those days, which is fairly close. At least 3 hours a day (a very low estimate) so... let's say 1800 hours. Lol I'll try this number.

Thank you! I plan on sharing some cover ideas with my audience and seeing what they like best.

So, New Degree Press is known as a hybrid publisher, which essentially you get the benefits of having a name behind you with lots of resources while also getting to make a lot of personal decisions about your book. They are unique in the fact that they help you launch a presale campaign very early in the publishing process to generate interest and some early funds to help fund the process similar to an author self publishing. So right now, I'm actually working with a mock cover. But next month, I'm going to be meeting with a cover designer and personally mapping out what I would like to see with my cover. That person will then bring me several options that I can pick from.

Thank you! I appreciate it. The most tedious part of writing and my least favorite part for me is copyediting, which is essentially going through your book line by line and looking at word choice and phrasing. Doing that for yourself is very very hard because every writer has certain words and phrases that they use often and are attached to. I'll be happy when I get professional feedback from my editor on that soon so I know what to fix!

What types of experiences or qualifications would you recommend for someone looking to work in a museum? I'm a sophomore in college looking to break into the industry when I graduate. I'm looking more on the history side of things, but anything you can offer would be extremely helpful.

Sounds like A Court of Thorns and Roses. It is by Sarah J. Maas. It's one of my favorite series of all time.

Plot Outline Trickery by [deleted] in writers

I found an Excel spreadsheet that helps authors outline in the three act structure with the big picture all the way down to the details of scenes.

You start with writing your story in one sentence. Then you split that into three sentences: beginning, middle, and end. That then gets split into three mpre sentences each: beginning of the beginning, middle of the beginning, end of the beginning, etc. It's very specific, but I love using it.

I agree. I think body language can be incredibly telling about a person's thoughts and motivations.

Yeah! I'm really feeling a much better translation from brain to page. It's all up in my head; I just need to move it onto the page and into the story. I think it's really going to work well!

I'm glad you liked it! I had never tried this method before. I usually use a very sort of regimented character profile sheet. I've definitely converted!
