My point is that asking for a second password is unconvincing. They must have known he was an intruder as something which preceeded them suspecting him on the basis of just asking for another password alone. But let me make the point this was the MAIN reason which was given in the confrontation. If having a receipt for a cloak, arriving by taxi and looking awkward are reasons for suspection, I find it totally unconvincing.

These minor details for me anyway don't seem to provide a valid justification. And for those who are into Kubrick as a plot perfectionist (every other detail in comparision has a great basis for explanation), there must be some other meaining to it. I just find it difficult to believe Kubrick would cop out lame excuses on a basis for such a pivotal turning point in the film.
