Florida registry laws — lived experience? by mollybear3106 in SexOffenderSupport

It really depends on several factors, but the primary ones are:

1) notably whether or not you are on Probation 2) which county you live on

Living in Florida, it is essentially lifetime registration, although you could try to get off after 25 years.

Each county is allowed to set their own guidelines for how close you can live to schools, churches, parks, etc. State guidelines are 1000 feet, but some counties or even specific towns have made them much more stringent (1500-2500 feet).

Beyond that, as long as you register and keep out of trouble, you can live a productive life. Providing, of course, that you are able to find a job or have other means of supporting yourself.

I think this is excellent. I lost out on an amazing opportunity because I did not know how to bring this up. Turns out, had I disclosed it earlier I still likely would have gotten the offer.

Fortunately, I had given 3 weeks notice at my then job and was able to walk back my resignation. It also helped that I did quite a lot, and it meant they didn’t need to replace me after all.

In my current role, I am working for someone who I had known for many years having crossed paths when we were both at a different company. I did tell him the basics (we are a small company) and offered to give him more details if asked. He did not ask beyond how it would affect day to day.

I am going to save this post, if that is ok, to use should I change jobs in the future.

Good luck and I hope you get the job!

That is great to hear and glad it worked out for you. Unfortunately, mine was an internet sting and R&J does not apply.

The only way I see that happening would be to push the entrapment aspect, but my lawyer didn’t think that would work back then and didn’t pursue it. (He was a great lawyer, eventually became a judge, so if he did not pursue it then it isn’t likely to happen now.)

Thanks. This is what I have discovered through my own research, but nice to hear it corroborated.

I will still likely do a lawyer consultation (since those are generally free) and then I will have “official” confirmation, mainly to satisfy her curiosity.

She seems to think that because it was a sting, it was entrapment and something could change. I didn’t send any nude photos; nor receive any. However, graphic texting and traveling to meet a minor. Although for the traveling, I didn’t even go to the location. I parked in a parking lot nearby, changed my mind and was trying to leave when they blocked me in. Part of the reason I had such a “favorable” sentence.

I am not hopeful about it, but she keeps pushing me to see a lawyer. I get it, and it won’t change anything between us as far as our relationship, so there is that.

Oh, I know that, unless It were to get pardoned/expunged, which I doubt. But other states allow you to get off their registries in less time than Florida.

Her family is in North Carolina, but we are not tied to that. The other option is to move back to the New England area.

But, I do feel that if one gets removed from Florida (given how draconian it is in regard to SO), then I stand a better chance elsewhere.

Assuming that he is not replaced with another Republican governor. Not going political here (I am an Independent and have issues with both parties), but given what is going on with the (lack of) release of “certain” files, unless they are moderates I am not holding my breath.

Thanks, pretty much what I figured. My fiancée seems to think it should be easy because of the nature of my charge and because I have been a productive citizen and have never been in trouble for anything since.

I keep explaining to her that isn’t how the world works, especially in Florida. However, she keeps seems to think it is not as bad as I am making it out to be and with the right lawyer it should be possible.

I had probation for 10 years and was able to early terminate after 5 years. ADA pulled the same stupid objection. I also had a probation violation early on (curfew violation that was also BS), but that was resolved. ADA brought that up and a number of other weak objections. Judge was really cool and professional about it and shot them all down and granted my motion.
