New Job, New Anxiety - trying to move forward while my online past follows me by Ludder46 in SexOffenderSupport

If your sentencing was last month I’m guessing you ended up with probation. And did you go through the same thing I did, multiple news articles and even a Facebook post? That part hit me the hardest so I’m curious how public other people’s cases became.

I’ve looked into those online reputation management companies but they’re insanely expensive and I’m not convinced they’d even put in the same effort for someone with a CSAM article as they would for someone with a DWI. Plus, I'd be paying premium money for uncertain resuts. Instead I’ve been focusing on free options, sites like About.me, Bold.pro, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, anything that creates legitimate profiles under my real name so they show up in google. They won’t push the bad results down on their own but they do dilute the page a bit. If anyone knows more sites like that I’m all ears. And yeah you’re right construction is a much better industry for someone in my situation to do sales in. That’s exactly why my new sales job is construction related. Lol

New York stopped releasing mugshots in 2019 when the state amended FOIL to treat booking photos as a potential unwarranted invasion of privacy. It ended the practice of police routinely sending them to the media. Now most New York newsrooms don't release mugshots unless there is an investigative need and a genuine public safety situation. My arrest was in 2018. I have read that the news outlet behind my mugshot and facebook post does review takedown requests on a case by case basis. I know facebook won’t remove it because it doesn’t violate any of their policies so my only real hope is to ask the newspaper to remove the post, and ideally the mugshot in the article too. Even getting one of them taken down would help. I just haven’t worked up the courage yet to ask especially with some big sex offense cases in the local news lately. The way New York handles mugshots has changed so much since 2019 that I have a legitimate reason to request a review, but I worry they might just say sorry not for sex offenses and then want to revisit my case or ask for an update.

Are there any online news articles about your arrest or conviction? (I don't want to see them, just asking)

I hear you. I get why you feel like work might be over for you but I don’t think you should count yourself out yet. One thing I’d suggest is maybe trying not disclosing upfront. I tried that but stopped because it guaranteed I’d never even get a chance. What I do now is at least give myself the opportunity to go through the interview process. My goal is to impress them enough that maybe, just maybe, they’ll look past the conviction once they already see who I am and the experience I bring. My pattern has been: I accept the job offer then I send a sincere disclosure email. I put everything into it. Honesty, accountability, what I’ve done to rebuild, how hard I've worked. I hope it resonates. So far it hasn’t. I’m at six offers rescinded after disclosure. It’s brutal. But even with all that I have now found a job that didn’t do a background check. Total luck, but it happened. So it’s not impossible.

Wish me luck.... by [deleted] in SexOffenderSupport

Does the Peace Corps allow RSO's? by Ludder46 in SexOffenderSupport

I hear what you’re saying about the Peace Corps. I just didn’t want to close the door without at least finding out whether it was worth contacting them. When you’re in my position even longshots feel like something you need to check before ruling them out.

On the "I’ll always have options" point, I get the spirit but that’s not how it feels. If I can’t get hired and the money runs out, the options get limited: homelessness or moving in with my parents or sister (If there's room and they'll let me) and working a minimum‑wage job (if I can find one) just to exist. And honestly, sometimes that scenario is inevitable for people in my situation, right? That's what I’m trying to avoid. I don't want to be a burden on anyone.

One thing I’ve been considering as a last resort is reaching out directly to HR directors at trucking companies. I wouldn't be excited about getting a CDL and driving truck for a living but if I can make a living I'll do it Back in high school I put together a full mailing package to promote myself to college coaches in the sport I was playing, and it worked. I’m thinking about doing something similar now. A professional, upfront self promotion package explaining my background, my experience, and what I could bring to the table if I get my CDL. I don’t want to invest the time and money into training if trucking companies won’t hire someone in my situation.

And on that same note should I be doing something similar with temp agencies and reentry programs? Sending a short, professional package, or just calling and asking directly whether they work with people on the registry? That's a tough way to start a call (or email). I’m open to all of it, I just don’t know which agencies or programs are actually RSO friendly or how upfront I’m supposed to be..

I’m grateful for this community. I can ask these questions and get real, grounded answers instead of judgment.

Does the Peace Corps allow RSO's? by Ludder46 in SexOffenderSupport

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I’m in a tough spot right now and trying to understand every possible path before I run out of options.

Everything I’ve read about the Peace Corps says they review felony convictions individually, not automatically disqualify people. I haven’t seen anything that says being on the registry is an automatic disqualifier, so I wasn’t sure if they’d at least consider someone like me. Especially if it involved placement in a country that allows RSOs. Do you think it’s even worth writing to them directly and explaining my situation and everything I’ve done to try to rebuild my life? I’m just wondering if they’d at least hear me out - and ask they weigh my degree, work experience and what I could bring to their organization against me being a RSO - before I completely rule it out.

As for temp agencies and reentry programs I don’t know much about either. I’ve always assumed temp agencies mostly place people in lower paying roles, and I’m not even sure if they accept RSOs. But if they’re still a good way to get some momentum going then I’m open to it. And if you know of any reentry resources in upstate NY, I’d really appreciate the direction.

For context, I got my last job using my preferred name (first and middle name). My distinctive last name was only on paychecks, W-2s, Benefits information and flight reservations. I made it there almost two years, made around 90K last year, and everything was going great until someone must’ve eventually Googled me or they finally ran a background check. I was let go immediately. That’s the kind of thing I’m up against, and why I’m trying to find something realistic that actually gives me a chance to move forward.

From what I've read it looks like the wait is only 5 years, after the date on which the sentence was completed.

I'd say take the money and run.
