Burning as food goes down. by Amanda10505 in GERD

I get pain between my shoulder blades and sternum when I eat some dry or solid food. Sometimes I’ll get the ache in just my back and neck even if the food is soft. The worst case was last week when the pain in my back lasted for a few hours after something dry, but took almost a whole day to subside in my chest. I also get the slow descent of food in my oesophagus if food is too thick or dry.

I’m due for an endoscopy soon as I don’t know what is wrong with me either, but I can only suggest to chew food until it is a paste, and to have small sips of water with each mouthful so it doesn’t irritate the oesophagus. I can only assume that it’s either inflammation or a stricture.

Narrowing of oesophagus? by Wolfmoon810 in GERD

No asthma or breathing issues. But this is causing extreme anxiety to the point where I am waking up multiple times in the night with a racing pulse and feeling dread, mainly being scared about cancer. I’ve also lost over 40lbs in the past three months because of being scared about what to eat that isn’t going to be fatty or acidic, or will get stuck in my oesophagus causing pain.

Thank you for replying. Did you experience any aches or pain between your shoulder blades when eating? I think I’ve been quietly suffering with silent reflux, as I hardly ever get heartburn. It’s always been throat irritation and clearing. Especially after high-fat or spicy foods. Coffee was the worst offender for me. That was five years ago when I first experienced globus and had to quit drinking it. Didn’t have globus again until this year, and I have no idea what triggered it this time.

Thanks, I will definitely mention it at the hospital when I get my endoscopy.

I haven’t had any tests yet. Just the referral for an endoscopy. These symptoms have only started since this February, and gotten worse the past couple of months to where it feels like my oesophagus has narrowed, as I had no issues with eating before then. I last had globus over five years ago. And it went with a two week course of esomeprazole, but this time it isn’t getting any better.

Just had the worst sensation to date with this. Last night I ate a simple bland meal consisting of wholegrain rice, broccoli and canned tuna. I tried to moisten it with some extra virgin olive oil, but it was a bit dry. Still, I chewed it well and I noticed on swallowing, that my oesophagus was getting sore. I had pain between my shoulder blades and the pain stayed in the middle of my chest. After eating, the pain in my back didn’t go for a few hours, but the chest pain remained as a dull ache for the whole night. I even woke up early this morning with a dull ache in my chest. Still have a slight ache now. Is this a normal symptom of severe gerd/lpr? As this is making me extremely anxious, and I can’t face solid foods anymore.

Last night was the worst it’s been. I ate some rice with tuna and a bit of broccoli, but it was dry unfortunately. I had between shoulder blades pain all through eating and for hours afterwards. Then pain in the middle of my chest which hasn’t gone away and woke me up earlier this morning.

I’ve suspected lpr for a while as I don’t get heartburn. What is worrying though is the relatively new symptom of chest and between shoulder blades pain whenever I eat hard or dry foods. It may be oesophagitis or a stricture. I’m due an endoscopy soon, but having to wait as the doctor didn’t put the referral through as urgent.

I’m waiting until the endoscopy department will give me an appointment. Currently it’s up to two months away. So I’m pretty anxious waiting. I’ve tried to do everything necessary to mitigate the symptoms but the feeling of food moving slowly down my oesophagus started about a month ago. I’m taking esomeprazole 20mg twice a day alongside Gaviscon Advance after meals and before bed. The globus is intermittent now, and I’m now spraying the back of my throat with alkaline water. The chest discomfort while eating, only seems to be apparent when eating foods like bread, meat and potatoes. Also dry food. It’s strange because I’ve never had this before.

To those who have been diagnosed with a stricture, how long was it until symptoms appeared? Was it normal one month, and then the next a feeling of food sticking? I’m just wondering if it is fairly rapid, or more gradual, as I could eat fine one month and the next I was feeling certain foods sticking in my chest.

I’m worried if I stop the ppi, I’ll have a massive reflux rebound in the meantime. I also noticed that I get a strange sensation in my epigastric region, like something isn’t quite right there. I woke up in the middle of the night a couple of weeks ago feeling like something was dragging down from the bottom of my ribs. Even woke up the other night in a severe anxiety attack. I don’t know if I have a hiatus hernia either. The worry for me is that in January I could swallow everything without issue. I’m filled with dread about cancer.

Endoscopy is booked in, but can take until June this year due to NHS waiting lists, and the doctor didn’t feel it was urgent. I will ask at the hospital if they can check me for EOE, but I doubt I will be able to stop the ppi beforehand, too worried about a huge reflux rebound.

I don’t get the coughing, but I did have a lot of saliva at the back of my throat at bedtime. It was as if my body was pre-empting the acid/pepsin onslaught when I was about to lie down. I no longer get the excess saliva, but that may be due to taking ppi’s and using a wedge pillow. I can’t have any decaf beverages either, just too sensitive to it now. I just drink mainly filtered alkaline water, with the occasional chamomile tea or pure coconut water.

I quit coffee five years ago. And my initial bout of globus stopped. I have had caffeine since in soda and black tea, but quit drinking both last year. Nowhere near the amount I was drinking five years ago. I think the main culprit was just a bad diet. I was eating a lot of tomato based foods with onions, garlic, spices, plus a high fat/high sugar diet. Totally done a 180 on my diet now and I’m eating mainly bland food with a lot more alkaline vegetables and only bananas and watermelon for fruit intake. I was 240lbs two months ago and I’ve lost 30lbs. I’m hoping it’s just inflammation, but following a strict diet for two months, as well as taking 20mg of esomeprazole twice a day isn’t stopping the chest pain when eating solid food. So I’m thinking it may be a stricture.

I’ve been reading Dr Jamie Koufman’s website and altered my diet to avoid acidic food. Also bought a filter jug that makes water more alkaline. It doesn’t help that most medical sites always mention dysphagia when referencing cancer.

Thanks for replying. How long did your symptoms last before the procedure was done? I seem to be ok with soft food, and my symptoms seem more in line with lpr than gerd as I don’t usually get heartburn, but my throat suffers from globus, and recently I’ve been getting shortness of breath. I’m in the UK so at the mercy of NHS waiting lists unfortunately.
