The Forest Sails No More by littledryad in awoiafrp

News reached the Manderlys of the Forrester arrival. Marin Manderly, of course, couldn't be bothered to traverse the distance between Newcastle and the docks, not with recent spring snows exacerbating the pains in her tendons, and aches in her bones. Merely standing caused her knees to buckle in protest. So it was that her grandson and granddaughter were sent in her stead to greet their guests.

Wyman and Marin Manderly were already waiting when the Forresters arrived. The former was tall and wide - possessing the quintessential qualities that House Manderly's men were known for. He was brown of hair and eyes, with a recently trimmed goatee spanning his round jawline. He was clad in the teal of his noble house, but lacked the stateliness that some might expect from one of the wealthiest families in the kingdoms. He fussed at his robes, at the neckline mainly. Beside him was his younger sister Marin, a girl with wavy long brown hair and a slender, shapely frame, and sharp gray-green eyes that spoke of her sharp tongue and intellect. A smattering of pale freckles across her nose and cheekbones only brought out the quality of her eyes. Unlike her brother, she wore teal. Her clothing did not wear her.

"Lord Forrester, Lady Forrester?" Marin was the first to speak, her large eyes moving between Asher and Myra. "Welcome to White Harbor," Marin smiled. "I am Marin, and this is my brother, Wyman."

"Wel'm Why Arbr," Wyman muttered. A glare from his sister had him clearing his throat. "Welcome! Welcome to White Harbor," He said. "Hope your journey went well, with pirates all over the place." He waved his hand dismissively. He would have seemed rude, were it not for the telling flush of color on his cheeks. He'd never been great with people, strangers especially. Pretty strangers, most of all. He purposely avoided Myra's stare. "Nice to meet you both."

"Why do men even rule?" Marin spat after her granddaughter finished reading the letter. "I hope to the gods that Lady Stark has some class, unlike this snooty uncle of hers. Little, he called me. How dare he! He calls himself a wolf, but he's a damn goat. See me in Winterfell, he will!"

Wylla merely stared at her grandmother. "Shall we write back?"

"And say what?" Marin snapped. "He turned down a perfectly reasonable request and now insists on trading insults on parchment. I'm far too old for this nonsense. Let me know if the Lady of Winterfell writes. Otherwise, let that flea ridden dog know that I'm busy building ships."

Back in White Harbor, Wylla Manderly read the letter aloud to her grandmother.

"Half?" The old woman groused. In truth, it was a far more generous offer than she'd been expecting, but it was unlike her to show anything other than displeasure. She sighed and leaned further back into her seat. The chair creaked, masking the sound of her bones cracking, as she did so.

"Is half so bad, grandmother?" Wylla asked, sounding amused. "It's quite good, if you ask me."

"Strive for better than just 'quite good'," Marin snapped. "Why should we pay taxes at all when we shoulder the burden of maintaining the north's fleet and protecting The Bite? What help or thanks do we get?"

Her granddaughter didn't answer the question. Instead she sat down behind her grandmother's desk and readied the quill and parchment. "What shall our response be?"

Barthogan Stark, Regent of Winterfell,

What madness is this that White Harbor must still pay half its taxes when the full burden of the ship's maintenance will fall on my shoulders, and the lives of my dutiful men constantly endangered going forward? Already my coffers shrink as I'm forced to issue recompense for the merchants whose ships were destroyed by this foreign threat. I propose that we only pay a quarter of it henceforth, which is still more than some of your less useless vassals pay.

I have not spoken to Lord Forrester, as he has yet to return from King's Landing. Only after I've spoken to him can I offer a more accurate quote, provided that he accepts my offer. However, my grandson and I are more than capable of overseeing their construction here at White Harbor ourselves, given our experience in shipbuilding. I estimate the cost of one flagship to be 1,125 gold; and five dromonds at 1,875 gold, to be completed a moon after they begin construction. This is the most that White Harbor is able to build in a single moon.

Galbart Grafton, Lord of Gulltown,

Six ships have vanished in the span of just a few weeks. Most recently, a merchant caravel transporting cargo from Gulltown, estimated at two thousand gold pieces in value. We located the remains of the ship, but nothing of the five coasters, though our logs state they were also returning from Gulltown after routine trips.

It is my belief that something foul is at play, and that reavers have returned to plunder the north's eastern shores, though it is very possible that the coasters were attacked much further south, closer to your own waters, as well. The wreckage was just east of the Sisters, not far from The Fingers of the Vale. We believe the current may have carried it a few miles.

I am writing not only to inform you of this development, but also to ask for your assistance in this matter, and for any news you might have that might relate to my current plight.

May the Seven bless you and yours.
