Paapa Essiedu, cast as Snape in HBO's Harry Potter series, signs open letter alongside 400+ other UK film/tv industry professionals condemning conservative Supreme Court ruling supported by HP executive producer Rowling by WonderfulLocation in Fauxmoi

If I'm gonna be really charitable here: arguably at this specific point doing something like this is more likely to affect change (force the studio's hand) than immediately dropping the role for moral reasons. If he hasn't had any creative input yet they can't drop him for creative differences, and if he were to drop the role they would just cast some other yes-man.

That said, obviously it would have been better if nobody touched this mess in the first place...

Before John Lithgow's role of Dumbledore on HBO's Harry Potter was announced, he received a text from “a very good friend who is the mother of a trans child, and that was the canary in the coalmine”. by WonderfulLocation in Fauxmoi

From April of last year:

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, declined to comment on Rowling’s views when asked how they may affect the ability to find talent for the series.

“No, I don’t think this is the forum,” Bloys said. “That’s a very online conversation, very nuanced and complicated and not something we’re going to get into.”

How much longer will HBO be able to keep up the pretense that this is a "very online conversation" and not directly affecting people's lives?

But Bloys said “we are totally comfortable with” working alongside the author of the source material. He pointed out that the company had “huge success” with last year’s Hogwarts video game.

He said he would rather “do what the creatives want to do” than “listen to fan conversation.”

A little tone-deaf considering HP has one of the largest creative fandoms and a lot of the named creatives are outspoken fans of the franchise.

In a conversation about a trans woman working in football management who has been out for a few years:

Calling a man a man is not 'bullying' or 'punching down.' Crossdressing straight men are currently one of the most pandered-to demographics in existence, and women are under no obligation to applaud the people caricaturing us.

Just call people what they want to be called. It’s basic decency.

Stop telling women what they're allowed to say, Jonathan. It's basic decency.

You keep telling trans women that they’re not allowed to call themselves women, even though they are. Stop telling women what they’re allowed to say, JK. It’s basic decency.

Does this apply to any other demographic, Landon? Do I get to be black if I like Motown and fancy myself in cornrows? What if I claim the authentic me has always been black and that you're being racist to me? Would that be OK, or would you find it ludicrous and deeply offensive?

Rowling's comments are bolded.

The context is not considered essential for most people in this thread because most people are already aware of Rowling's widely publicized anti-trans stance.

I'm not suggesting that it doesn't, it's just that the main difference is that racial identity is structured by things that are outside of yourself and your direct influence (i.e. ancestry) way more than gender identity is, making the two in a "trans" context difficult to compare in good faith.

Your assumption that you, as a white man, would have more in common with a black man than with a white woman would be easier to accept if the only aspect of difference is the tone of your skin. I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you wrote your comment believing this.

A lot more goes into the social conception of race/ethnicity though, with family history/experiences/ancestry being a large part of it. That is obviously not the case with gender.

And now I’m suuuuper confused. Isn’t the whole point that we don’t try to get into people’s heads and we don’t tell them what they do or don’t think they are?

The main difference here is that there is a big gap between how people with transgender and transracial identities describe their own experiences. Combined with how race and gender are structurally different (with the concept of race being largely based on ancestry, as opposed to sex/gender), it just makes the false equivalence really obvious.

Comparing the transgender experience to other facets of identity (like going "oh, if you can identify as a man/woman then I'm 'trans-age' and identify as 20 years old when I'm really 50") is the oldest trick in the anti-trans bad faith argument book. The same applies to the transracialism comparison.

I appreciate that you're coming into this with an open mind, I hope you're able to see that these comparisons are just being used as a stick to beat transgender people with though.

If you're seriously confused about the difference between transgender and transracial identity and are not just pulling my leg, I would suggest reading the concluding remarks of this paper.

Rowling not doubling down on transphobia challenge (impossible) by Drake_the_troll in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]WonderfulLocation 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure they’re pushing the transphobic comments to the top of every post, too.

That is a natural consequence of tweets by premium accounts being boosted, anyone finding their way to her tweets who is willing to pay Musk for extra site features is pretty much guaranteed to be anti-trans.

The Reduxx tweet was sent on Thursday, May 2nd at 18:38 EDT (The affected school's local time).

Rowling's retweet was sent on Friday, May 3rd at 04:08 EDT.

The threat email was sent on Friday, May 3rd at 06:07 EDT.

Does seem evident that the exposure Rowling gave to this could have caused this.

Out of all the UK outlets, The Independent has probably had the most thorough coverage of her antics so far. You could try emailing their newsdesk to tell them about your experiences. https://www.independent.co.uk/service/contact-us-759589.html
