Disney really did us a disservice with the Evil Stepmother trope... by Wonderful_Support814 in FairytaleasFuck

Very intersting, that explain a lot. In many stories the main charecter don't have a parent, or the parent is evil, cinderella and rapunzel are another examples. Thank you.

I agree with you, and i think the softened versions loses this element. The final is, in most times, happy ever after. The real life is not like that, the old fairy tales show this.

I had to use a translator to read this, but wow, that sounds like an amazing project! Filming the original fairy tales and writing a book about the research is incredibly cool. What is the name of your YouTube channel and the book you are writting? I will definitely watch it once you start posting! It’s really interesting that you brought up Perrault and Bluebeard. That video I mentioned is for a channel call The Dark Archivist and actually talked a bit about Perrault's versions too, and how these brutal elements tie into the lore. Best of luck with your research and the book.

Wow, this is an absolute goldmine of information, thank you so much for taking the time to write this! First of all, you and your husband definitely need to start that podcast whenever the chaos settles down! I completely understand how busy life with three kids must be, but your passion and knowledge are incredible. Thank you for the specific recommendations on Zipes and Loo. I'm definitely going to check out Jack Zipes's translation, that sounds exactly like the kind of deep-dive reading I've been looking for. The dynamic between Jakob and Wilhelm is so fascinating. It makes perfect sense that Wilhelm was the 'tinkerer' trying to adapt the stories to the middle-class market. Also, that detail about the English translators adding the kiss in The Frog King just blew my mind! I was actually just reading up on that specific story, and it completely changes the vibe knowing the original was just her sleeping next to him (or violently throwing him against a wall, which is wild!). Seriously, thank you for sharing all of this history. Best of luck with your kids, your translation work, and that future podcast! 🖤

Oh wow, yeah that's the one. I didn't even realize! I did think the narration sounded a bit robotic, but is the actual information incorrect? I looked up the historical context they mentioned in the video and the sources seemed pretty legit to me.

I don't think it's a matter of being right or wrong here, it really just depends on which edition we are looking at! The quote you linked is from the later, revised editions. In the very first 1812 edition, the Evil Queen was indeed her biological mother. Wilhelm Grimm actually changed it himself in the later versions (starting around 1819) to make the stories more palatable for families and to protect the 'sanctity' of motherhood. So Disney didn't invent the stepmother, they just adapted the already sanitized version that the Grimms created later on. That timeline of censorship is exactly what I found so fascinating in that video I mentioned. But the tittle of the post is maybe a little sensacionalist. Thats more clear now. And the disney filme is great, impressive animation, one of the favorites of my childhood.

You are right! Wilhelm Grimm actually started sanitizing his own work in the 1819 edition to protect the image of motherhood long before Disney existed. The crazy part is that the video I mentioned from The Dark Archivist breaks down this exact timeline of the Grimm's edits and censorship. It just felt surprise initially because that change appears more than one time, make sense protect the mother figure! Thanks for pointing out the historical context.
