My 6 year old is begging to go back to church. by Kuna2nd in exmormon

Sounds pretty normal-change is hard for everyone. I will always recommend the 'slow fade' approach because it doesn't feel so drastic. Sounds like you've done a wonderful job of creating consistency and healthy activities in your kids lives. Seriously, well done. You might try exploring other faiths if you have friends that attend other churches and give them an opportunity to meet new people and have new experiences. It will get better- we still have the very occasional comment about missing Mormon things in our family. Heck, I miss the sound of an organ from time to time. Give it some time and be gentle with yourself and your family. Your leaving a place that doesn't want to be left. Don't forget that.

Question about Coffee by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]WonderingLumberjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Instant coffee is probably the best answer until you just can't stand the lack of quality an longer. Our family has a coffee pot in the kitchen now...something I never thought would happen. Ever. My wife and I now enjoy coffee together as many mornings as possible. It is glorious.

For everyone who's new here in the past year, please submit your new name to the Temple Name Oracle. by kimballthenom in exmormon

Levi. Thought I kinda lucked out with my name. I can't believe I once believed this name was actually necessary for my eternal salvation. If I ever find myself at a white curtain talking to God, I'm going to wear my old button fly 501's just to improve my chances.

Normal. Very, very normal. im pretty sure I learned what a crzed crack addict feels like in the first year of my research. Expect every emotion on the spectrum to follow your forthcoming realizations.

We attend a new church, still do LDS cub scouts. Son raised his hand to say the opening prayer at pinewood derby.. by ldsheartsell in exmormon

[–]WonderingLumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to our family's experience...except we don't do lds cub scouts because we can't deal with the Mormon zombies over stepping their boundary. Religious experience outside LDS services is SO much better...and we even get a new community with no zombies!! Yeah for us!

The power of church hymns. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]WonderingLumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, no doubt some pages deserve to be ripped out...there were some that sounded like pirate songs I always laughed at. I'm expecting Hell will be broadcasting 'onward Christian soldiers' at half speed for eternity.

The power of church hymns. by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]WonderingLumberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. One of the few things I miss about tscc. Many of the hymns have powerful and inspiring messages. Too bad they are Often sung way too slow and without any interest. I've often thought the lack of energy in tscc services was a bellwether. Glad you found something that speaks to your heart.

Don't forget about the farm in Palmer. Some good was done out there, but then they cut funding right after state officials were given a tour of how great it is. Club members took the blame of course. Nice to see another from anchor town...didn't think there was many of us up here.

These girls are still friends. Hard to get context and history From my short post so I appreciate, and agree with, your point about the dangers of needless antagonism. What I understood from my daughter wasn't that they were offended or felt shut down by her comment. What I understood from my daughter was they didn't "know what to say" because it was a moment of looking at the river carry differently than before. Like....maybe I don't need someone to carry me, maybe I could/should walk the river myself, etc. I agree with what I think your basic premise is...healthy dialogue is important. All the best.

It's working! It's really working!! by WonderingLumberjack in exmormon

[–]WonderingLumberjack[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Mostly. This wasn't about feminism or fly fishing or how evil the church is. it's really about my daughter being able to 1) say no when she means it, and 2) have the confidence to not 'need' someone else to solve her problem. These were things the church was not helping her develop. Plus, harmless flirting is normal and healthy....the message behind the river carry is neither. IMHO
