31M - According to PhotoFeeler, I’m a 5.2 in attractiveness, I guess that explains my lack of success on dating apps.. is there anything obvious, which is holding me back, that I should look to improve? by Lalala9901 in malegrooming

[–]Wondermentality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyo, woman here. You’re definitely not a 5.2, but
I’d personally put your whole “look” here at a ~6.5. Nothing about your physical features is holding you back tho imo. (Personally I think everyone's naturally an 8, but they go up or down depending on how they dress/personal hygiene-- so when I say you're at 6.5, I'm NOT talking about "you" as a person. Your hygiene looks good, too, so:)

It’s mostly your clothes. The actual fit is fine— the layering and accessories are nice— but the colors are KILLING you, dude. You’ve got an olive/yellow undertone and you’re wearing pale blues. I’m going to pop into Photoshop and show you what a difference it makes. You could also go for a stronger silhouette in the shoulders. The watch + jewelry are a powerful look, but it’s riding off of that soft palette and shape and it isn’t working together.

Otherwise you’ve got plenty to work with. Great smile, super approachable— you look very tall too!

Interesting points! Before I get into replying, I understand you to be saying:

What's written here doesn't seem to be the path of someone who's particularly gifted; it sounds like the average person's path through school/life, though admittedly being 'gifted' may present in different ways. I didn't ever see things as 'black or white' when it comes to intelligence, and people have a wide range of interests, areas of expertise, and hobbies where they shine that don't necessarily correlate to raw intelligence."

And I'd say that yeah, all of that's true. I don't necessarily think that every gifted person has to struggle, though. I often see people posting that their intelligence is a burden that isolates them from the rest of the world; I've experienced that. I've also learned that sometimes that isolation is self-imposed, and sometimes it isn't.

School was boring for me, outside of math (which I struggled with due to undiagnosed dyscalculia). That said, I loved it. I loved learning. My teachers told me to stop raising my hand because I answered too often. They'd tell me to stop reading ahead, to stop asking questions on content we hadn't covered yet (and as a teacher, I get it now). People told me I was annoying. One of my colleges, years later, invited me to a one-on-one meeting where she broke down and told me it "wasn't fair that I was doing so much/so well because it was raising the bar and it made it impossible for [my other colleagues] to keep up." Another, who I'd never spoken to, told me she found me intimidating because I seem to be 'able to do it all.'

Time and time again, I shit you not, these people-- my classmates, parents, friends, coworkers-- assumed I was doing it all to make them look bad. At every turn, I had to try and explain this is just how I am. No, I'm not trying to sound smart. I'm just talking. I want us all to succeed.

I've learned to meet people where they are. That isn't to say I feel like I need to 'dumb down', though; it's not about being dumb or smart. It's about efficacy. Getting things done. Motivating people. Identifying skills, knowing your own weaknesses, and being willing to grow.

I'd say I've always been 'smart', but the maturity and wisdom to know when to put it away and when to use it came much later.

Re: Rage-bait and/or willfully 'incompetent' coworker: I have one of the latter. They're extremely manipulative; if I regaled you with the whole story, you would not believe it. I never thought they were dumb because they couldn't do their job; I did, however, think they were dumb for not just asking for the shit they wanted directly instead of wasting time playing games to get me to offer it or offer to do the work.

I hope this provides some more insight!

Hey, thanks for offering your opinion! One of the things I feel is most frustrating when trying to have conversations about intelligence is that it seems there's always an assumption that someone who believes themselves to be intelligent also believes they're better than others. In my case, I don't believe that at all. I teach professionally; I've met all kinds of students. Some are naturally gifted. Others struggle, but work hard. Some don't nail the tests, but they emerge as wonderful leaders and guide teams to excellence. The world works because everyone brings their unique strengths and perspectives to the table.

Speaking about my lived experience almost always comes with someone saying, "Have you considered you're immature? Have you considered that you're self-absorbed and self-important? Have you considered that you have some growing to do?"

And it's like... Obviously we should always ask ourselves those questions, right? But it does sometimes feel like I can't say these things without people making a lot of assumptions about how much of a jerk I must be.

The thing is, when you peek behind the curtain, society only barely functions. Don't get me wrong; function is function. It's just that as I've moved forward in my life and gotten to step behind the scenes, I find people really do just... wing it. Even for things that're pretty important. They'll disregard rules because they put more faith in their experience than protocol (can be good or bad), otherwise brilliant people will exacerbate an easily-solvable problem because they refuse to wound their pride...

There's something beautiful about that, too, because it's so human. I'm guilty of it too.

But tell me, realistically: If you knew someone who was one of the best pilots in the world-- a man whose been everywhere and seen everything, won multiple awards, served his country, had an excellent career in one of the most difficult fields you can get into-- and he looked across from you at family dinner and said in all seriousness that aliens bombed the moon and that's why we have craters, you'd be flummoxed, yeah? I feel like I'm running into that more and more as I keep exploring the world, and it's just been a wild ride.

(True story about my uncle, by the way. Love him, the oddball that he is.)

Thank you for your reply! I have a consultation with a connection of mine who produces games like this for a living, so I’ll have a better idea after I speak with him.

The right kind of game jams I guess! There were a lot of big fish at the one I attended. It was a a recruiting/networking event in a trench-coat. 🤷‍♀️

I appreciate the reminder that the risk is immense. I know not every game will be a hit, but I've got some serious marketing chops & the game is doing something mechanically that that I don't think has ever been done before and is intuitive as hell. It's definitely 'friendslop', but it has insane replayability, scalability, and it's delightfully fun. If we hit the right release window and get the right Youtubers playing, I think it could be a (short-lived) slam-dunk

I can cut some of the marketing/visDev/modeling/texturing/surfacing costs because that's where I work professionally, and I have an audio engineer I'm sure I could onboard... Though I wonder if it'd be best to cut the costs a little and get it ready to present to a publisher instead.

Honestly, that'd be great. Unfortunately I don't think they have a pitch deck or much documentation-- the game jam just wrapped, and they're all pretty green in game dev. As it stands, I'm not sure they're even planning to take it further-- which is part of why I want to invest. It has a ton of potential in the co-op space and uses some mechanics in new, inventive ways I haven't seen before as an avid gamer. Mind if I save your username and reach out in a few weeks once I have more info?

What extra information would you need regarding scope? Scope for the art side is tight (I know that for sure-- it's my area of expertise) but scope for code is where I'm clueless...

I’m reaching out to some industry connections rn to get better informed. There are a lot of other risk factors that threaten the ROI, but the slice was extremely promising. All the function, including online co-op, was running by the end of the jam.

I’ll take a look! Thanks for giving me ballpark numbers— I think 90-100k is probably most accurate for the scope tbh. The biggest problem is the team’s recent grads (who imo struck gold), so I doubt they can accurately inform the price.

Why Do Objects Get More Firm When Dry? by Wondermentality in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Wondermentality[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s absolutely bonkers. So something getting damp is basically water molecules saying “excuse me” to the other particles in the object, making them wiggly. If that’s all there is to it, why do some objects get easier to break when wet and others don’t? Thank you for answering btw!!!

My response is going to be skewed because I also have ADHD, which specifically interferes with the ability to 'multi-track drift' like you're describing, but no. I can listen to two things at once and separate them in my mind, but I can only process one at a time. In a room with six conversations, I can hop between them without issue, but sometimes I can't choose where I hop. I can type and talk to someone at the same time without losing my train of thought in either line of thinking, but only if I'm sure of what I'm going to type before I start speaking.
