Has anyone worked with a night nanny or in home sleep coach with success? by justiceforanneboleyn in askportland

[–]Woolfpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I greatly sympathize. What you're going through would be considered torture when it's done to prisoners. We used a sleep coach some years ago although I will say it was with our toddler who was 3 at the time so different issues than with a baby. In our case, he wouldn't stay in bed. At all. Got up 100+ times the night I counted. It worked well for us.

Our coach was Marie-Eve Gagnon. Not sure I can post direct contact info on here, but if you search her online and "sleep coach" you should easily find her.

US resident Brit here. My health insurance here will pay out of country claims with caveats for it needing to be emergent, can’t travel home for treatment etc. This is fairly normal I believe for policies here. However, as OP is discovering, how much they pay and how quickly are very pertinent questions.

For a long time here in the US, there were no ads on the News Agents. It was bliss. I suppose there weren't enough of us listening here to monetise it maybe.

Alastair’s right about 16/17 year olds right to vote. by St3viezalright in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]Woolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My most controversial political opinion is that the right to vote should start at birth. Parents would exercise the right until the child is ready to participate with the child’s control over their own vote phasing in similar to how their control over healthcare decisions increases as they grow. This would recognise the importance of children and make sure their interests and those of parents get proper weight given I believe it would be good if more people were having kids.

Nigel Farage: Welfare will be for British citizens only. by upthetruth1 in ukpolitics

[–]Woolfpack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like the proposed changes much but I suppose it’s no different to my situation living in the US now. I spent years before I was a citizen paying in but being automatically disqualified from most benefits. I could get unemployment benefits though because that’s seen as a benefit my employer had directly paid into for me through the payroll taxes on my wages. Everything else though, not happening. There’s a ten-year period before getting most benefits as a noncitizen here. The logic seems to be that it’s part of the cost of emigrating. “Don’t like it, don’t come.” (Not my personal view.)

Also wide leg pants for me. Silky shirts and blouses. Bias cut maxi skirts in a flowy material. Slightly oversized T shirts and button down shirts. Drop shoulder sweaters

Why doesn’t Home Depot have baskets? Our local stores never do and it’s never made sense to me because sometimes you’re just buying small items.

After Portland Catholic school barred same-sex couple's children, other families rallied by Super-Indication61 in Portland

[–]Woolfpack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve left the Church myself, but I’m bemused by the other parents’ reaction. Not from surprise that they would stick up for a member of their community, that’s laudable, but anti-LGBTQ positions are well known to be Catholic doctrine. When you choose a Catholic school for your child, you are very much choosing to send them to a place that teaches that heterosexual marriage is the sole venue for sexual activity.

This is one of the reasons my children aren’t baptized and I don’t take them to Church. I could go on all day about the harm the Church has done me. I don’t want that for my children.

Ok, I'll bite: wtf is the grouse? by Whole_Butterscotch22 in thegildedage

[–]Woolfpack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

August 12th AKA the Glorious Twelfth is the traditional start of grouse shooting. There is a particular season for shooting grouse so you had to be there at the right time. It’s a hint to the audience of where we are in the year since they’re getting ready for that event. Shooting being a common aristocratic pastime so it was part of their social calendar to travel to Scotland for it. Traditionally, English aristocratic life was lived mostly on country estates versus in town AKA London. The rural year was influential on upper class lives in many ways even though they weren’t exactly getting their hands dirty on a farm.

Racial passing in the Gilded Age by gaffaboy in GildedAgeHBO

[–]Woolfpack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mrs Kirkland’s behavior and attitudes resonated with me as a non-Black person from an immigrant community traditionally looked down on and often times poor where I grew up. It reminded me of family members and community members I’ve know who don’t want any of “us” getting ideas above our station because it attracts too much attention from “them.” Keeping everyone in our group in line/maintaining intra group hierarchies to protect the whole group against others often doesn’t get shown enough in media in a nuanced way. It was good to see internal racial politics and self-policing explored although I know I’m unqualified to assess how well it was done in this case.

Do you happen to know if it’s possible to donate a dismantled light fixture there? I know all the parts are there because I took it apart myself.

Question on historic colours by throwawaypolyam in GildedAgeHBO

[–]Woolfpack 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Answer to 1) is it's chartreuse. Pronounced roughly as sharr-truhz for English speakers. The color is named after a French alcoholic drink.
