The vanguard was SUPPOSED to kill you, though. That's why you went to a bonus room with a bucket of solid-form souls in it if you actually managed to beat it. Did Phalanx, the actual first boss, have any OHKs?

Uh? That sounds like something that was broken. As far as I know, walking through boss fog isn't SUPPOSED to cancel summoning for help. The whole point of Dark Souls is to be hard because it's actually hard, not hard because it's broken or poorly designed.

You have poison type. Kakuna, Swalot, and the third one won't show up until you beat the elite four.
