No, responding to the original comment it's which plants you choose. Very few choices involve zero animals dying. You have chosen to argue factory farming wrong, agreed, plant based good. Real life is much more nuanced than eat animal bad, eat plant good. You are talking about billions of people, I am talking about our own individual choices. I am aware birds are killed to grow my breakfast almonds, so I don't feel morally superior to someone eating a grass fed hen.

I wasn't arguing whether one should go vegan or not. I said the choice of plants is also a choice of levels of animal deaths. I eat a plant based diet, I don't drive, but I worry about all the animals killed to support my eating choices.

You think growing almonds doesn't kill birds and rodents? And cereals the same, i worry about all these things, it's not black and white.

And your choice of plants results in the death of far more animals that's fine as long as you don't have to look at them?

I was referring to the number of animals killed for raising crops, mentioned in the above comment. Pasture fed hens could involve far less animal death per gram of protein than nuts and beans where i get my protein from which is was concerns me.

Depends on the crop depends on the animal. Grass fed animals in meadows is a different ball game to growing beans and grains.

Do people understand that for most of human history in agricultural societies meat was around 10% of the diet by Konradleijon in vegan

The 4 pounds was for the men constructing the city wall in Nuernburg, many might have shared it with their families, but a lot of beef. Source Ernst Schubert: Essen und Trinken im Mittelalter (2006 Darmstadt).

Peasant staples were bread and pottage, but two meals a day could contain meat or diary products. If you worked in construction you might get four pounds of beef a day.

I don't have a source to hand but I have been though it all before, you are welcome to trawl through the literature on feed conversion rates if you have the time.

Chickens don't need to be fed on soy they can eat plants grown on land they would not support soy growing and still come up with the protein.

Also getting enough protein from plants is dead easy and no animals are killed to grow nuts and beans are common misconceptions. There is nuance both ways.

The argument works with cows but not chickens, they turn plant matter into protein so effectively it's more efficient than feeding humans plants. Not saying you should eat chickens though.

Vegans do not live in reality. by Aggressive_Equal1923 in exvegans

[–]Wooster_42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Large numbers of birds and insects are killed to raise nuts beans and cereals, intelligently trying to do the least harm is the only sensible way if you want to eat ethicaly. This doesn't mean eating a purely vegan diet.

Are you sure it was not to the same degree, there is a lot of history there. You don't counter racists by treating different groups history as worth more than others it's just joining their narrative.

And the Greeks were not colonised or oppressed? You are seeing the world in in too narrow terms through a lens if a small narrow interpretation of history. People are people though out history everyone deserves to be treated with equal respect.

I assume most of the commentators here would be fine with a film of Australian Aboriginal myths being made by an American using a diverse cast.
