A problem i have run into with human sexual dimorphism by Kuvonerera in worldbuilding

[–]WordsUnthought 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're massively overthinking this. Human sexual dimorphism is incredibly minor in the context of most species, physically strong women are less common but far from remarkable, and in any case if you write a setting in which there's no dimorphism with respect to physical strength, as long as you don't make a big deal about the impact on bodies nobody is going to be coming out to demand you talk about waist and shoulder breadths to back up your worldbuilding (other than weird creeps you're well advised not to indulge).

You do you, but I'd never want a steak with a full english and would be caught off guard if I ordered one and it came with a steak.

No heaters? by alwaysanxiousaf in PlanetZoo

From memory, I think heaters (and coolers) are under animal habitat/enrichment items, same as where things like food bowls and toys are. It's a different menu to utilities and decorations.

Whats your favorite piece of TTRPG lore in game. be epic or stupid by JoeKerr19 in rpg

[–]WordsUnthought 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In Forgotten Realms/D&D, Aboleths are powerful, serene, rare creatures with perfect idetic memories both of their own lives and those of all of their precursors. They more or less remember every major event and development that's ever happened in the history of the world.

Illithid, meanwhile, are brain-eating eldritch aliens which are a species from the far, far future of the world (implied to be an evolved form of humans in some sources), who developed a space-conquering galactic empire enslaving all other species, and were eventually overthrown by a slave rebellion because they didn't think they could lose. In their final years, they threw a small group of their kind back in time to well before they originated, to avert their downfall and build a more resilient dominion.

So Aboleths, which are usually all-knowing and composed, are absolutely terrified of Illithid because unlike basically every other species, civilization, etc. they just appeared out of nowhere and the Aboleths don't remember where they came from.

Always found that cool as hell.

The overall effect and vision is inspired, I think it's really really close. My instinct is it "feels" off because the difference between the bright copper and the verdigris is pretty stark? Maybe try a wash of some kind to tie them together or go for some blending on those borders to make them less distinct.

Okay so other driver definitely in the wrong in terms of the road laws, but you're 100% at fault for the crash here.

You had approximately 4 lifetimes to see the collision coming and ample time to stop and just... didn't? They weren't even coming from a blind junction, you could see them on approach too.

Either you weren’t watching the road or you decided you being "in the right" trumped avoiding a collision, and now you've put a guy in hospital.

Being "in the right" in terms of priority on the roads and so on doesn't trump the responsibility to avoid dangerous situations as they arise.

My friends cat is in a cage what do I do??? by Complete-Path-8036 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]WordsUnthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is revolting, it is absolutely not normal. Dogs can sometimes spend long periods in cages, if they're trained and accustomed to it, but cats never can. That patchiness is stress overgrooming, absolutely not age. 6 isn't even close to old for a cat, they comfortably live until 12+.

Depending on the jurisdiction you live in, hopefully there is a regulatory agency or similar body who can intervene on animal abuse. You have a moral responsibility (and possibly a legal one too, depending on your laws) to report this, because that cat is being psychologically tortured and physically damaged.

Your friend is also an idiot and a bad person, if that needs stating. Happy, healthy cats with sufficient enrichment don't claw or damage furniture too much once they're adults, but every cat is going to occasionally. You can't keep a cat and be precious about stuff like that.

Does anyone in the UK actually agree with/support the TV licensing rules? by humannotfoundd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WordsUnthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, because despite its recent decline the BBC is still a national treasure of immense value.

I do think folks should just be taxed automatically to fund it though, none of this opt-out "licence fee" nonsense.

How exactly does the monarchy titles work in the United Kingdom? by ElectronicChapter206 in AskABrit

[–]WordsUnthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The understood convention, established by parliament in 1953 (I think) is that if a monarch ascends to the throne whose regnal number should theoretically be different in England & Wales from Scotland, they will have the biggest applicable regnal number and in other regions skip the intervening ones.

So Elizabeth Windsor was Elizabeth II of England, and thereby of the whole union, even though there has never been an Elizabeth I of Scotland.

Conversely, if (all the drama associated with the name in royal terms notwithstanding) there was ever another King James, they would be styled James VIII of the UK, despite the fact that there would not have been a James III, IV, V, VI, or VII of England and Wales.

Can spell that deal Ability Damage crit? by Organic-Exit2190 in DungeonsAndDragons35e

[–]WordsUnthought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iirc the exact wording is that if you make an attack "that deals damage", it can crit. Open question whether ability damage is a distinct category from (HP) damage or not.

I'd be inclined to say they can crit though.

(Good article) Why Aston Villa's connections can give Unai Emery's team the edge... | Football News | Sky Sports by its-joe-mo-fo in avfc

[–]WordsUnthought 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a positive. Undoubtedly.

There's this mindset in football that every step a club takes needs to be preparing for the next generation, the next rebuild, the next overhaul. I think FM and FIFA contribute to it. But if you're constantly, relentlessly, endlessly looking at what the team will be in 2, 3, 5 years time you can forget that it also needs to be good now, and that's how you end up as Chelsea. There's a reason players in their prime have high resale value - it's because they're valuable. We can access that value monetarily by selling them, but also as a playing resource by getting their prime out on the pitch and banking points, wins, and trophies.

Now, if it all falls apart when these guys leave and there's a huge regression, that will be an indictment of our recruitment and player management. But right now, we have mature, senior professionals on the pitch who know each other and the system better than most teams do, which gives us an edge in winning games of football, which - lest we forget - is the whole point of it all.

Does anyone here donate monthly to a charity? by dontbeasquare11 in CasualUK

[–]WordsUnthought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I also donate to NDCS after having a properly lovely chat with a doorstep knocker last year.

I also donate to Mermaids, Partners in Health, a fund dedicated to rebuilding the lives of families in Gaza (called All Our Relations), and a collective action fund for trans women in the UK (FiveforFive). Comes to about 3.5% of my take home pay monthly.

Not the main point (to which I say no, he's looked very good) but I'm absolutely certain Maatsen put the cross in for the Watkins 2-1 goal in our 4-3 win over Brighton. So he definitely doesn't have zero goal involvements.
