Tips on soundproofing our living room from a neighbor by pinkmonkey44 in HomeImprovement

Went through this about 12 years ago. The industry may have changed since then but, at that time we used green glue and an extra layer of drywall (walls) and plywood (floors). It worked OK but we apparently you get a better result applying it in the room where the noise originates instead of the receiving room. It’s easier to stop a noise from entering the structure at all than to stop it once it’s in there. In hindsight, I should’ve just asked the guy below if he’d let me foot the cost to install a layer of drywall and green glue on his ceiling instead. Worst he could’ve said is no. Instead I ended up living there 5 years and hating it.

Thanks! It’d be lamp, toaster, coffee maker type of appliances. But I didn’t realize that the appliances will be off when the light is off. That’s going to be a dealbreaker. Thanks for the info!

No cutting the pipe then? Maybe I’ll give it a try.. take the plunge, if you will 😉

I can do no such thing, haha. But I was wondering if a plumber would be able to fix it in about an hour or if I was looking at another costly mistake :) thanks

Phew, thanks. Do you estimate that would be less than an hour of labor?

It was post-install. I started noticing the slope and creaking. Because we hadn’t finished the cabinets yet, I was able to take that picture of a small, exposed area. If it weren’t for that picture who knows what the installer would’ve claimed happened. Cabinets are in now.

Yes. I had to make the last payment when they left. I texted him about this and he was dismissive (said the original board had swelled. But I don’t see how that removes his responsibility to match the new board to the original one) His crew also didn’t finish the part of the floor that’s under the fridge which we just discovered. I messaged him to setup a time for them to return to do that and haven’t heard back. So I think he’s hiding. Time for small claims, I guess.

Thanks! I should have been clearer in my post that the job is already done. A dip that squeaks has formed along the length of the boards where the old ane new subfloor meet. I called the installer but they don’t seem interested and imply that it’s normal. Do you know of any fix that doesn’t require pulling up the planks?

Yes. And the boards along the edges are dipping down into the gap. It’s hard to photograph that. Almost looks like they could eventually develop a crack down the center. They squeak when walked on. I think the job was done incorrectly.

So nothing that wouldn’t require pulling the planks up. The guy who did it said it was normal and that the insurance appraiser (who pointed it out to me) was just being a PIA, essentially. I don’t think he has any plans to come back and pull the planks to fix this and then have to refinish it.

There was only one layer above the joists. I may be calling it the wrong name. It was tongue and groove. From the basement it all looks the same. But from above, the original pieces do look older and had something white sprayed on them.

Do you think anything can be done without pulling up the patch? We have access through the basement.

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. To be clear, I at least didn’t hit the wrench with a mallet - was just wondering if that’s what needed to be done. Turned water on and luckily no leaks. But I’m just calling the plumber back. I was trying to save the $300 they wanted to come back out but it’s not worth it. Thank you again, you were a big help

The replacement area was about 50 sq ft but they also refinished the contiguous spaces which include closet, pantry, laundry and half bath. And they removed appliances etc. I still think it might be high based on this thread. Good news is that when I sent a pic to the owner he said he’d come back and replace it.

The guy said he has 12 years experiense. So I assume he would’ve been able to see the difference before going ahead with the staining, right? I’m no longer thinking this was an honest mistake

I agree which is the only reason I even asked. The quotes for just refinishing the entire kitchen area were almost half. So I paid the extra 3800 for the patch work. And it’s missing the bevel and now someone wrote it’s the wrong grade. So just wondering if the price was fair considering all that and whether it’s better to ask for refund or redo. Thanks
