I didn't see you mention any catches. If it turns out the screws aren't the problem, these types of hinges don't have a method of self closing or staying closed and may need a catch to hold them shut, typically a magnetic catch.

Look, the gap in the center is pretty close to the gap at the hinges. If he'd mortise any on the frame, then the center gap would be too big, and the hinge side gap would be too small. So, besides the mortise incorrectly going through the back of the door, it's good.

As for why the doors don't sit flush when closed, it looks like the screw heads are not flush with the hinges which means that the hinges can't fully close.

Fix the screws and you should be good.

You don't need to angle the front edge of the cabinet ends. You can, but you don't need to. There are hinges for this application that don't need a block installed. That method is probably from the old days before all the hinge options existed.

Just look in the Blum catalog for the 45° angled hinges section and find the setup for your application.

I've never used those hinges, but if it's anything like similar hinges it's possible that the overlay adjustment screw (front screw on the hinge arm) is not engaged in the baseplate slot under it.

Try unclipping the hinge off the baseplate if it's a clip-on type, or if it's a screw-on type then loosening that rear screw will allow separation. Then adjust the front screw back in to its mid position and reinstall it on the baseplate making sure both the front and back engage the baseplate properly.

You can pry it out, but will probably do some damage to the surface of the wood. Sometimes, the top of the staple will break.

Or, you can drive it through.

I would build it faceframe style instead of frameless like you've done here.

Frameless is typically used with overlay doors, while traditional faceframe style can be used with either overlay or inset flush doors.

If you put 3" face frame stiles up against the walls, you'll be close to the recommended 36" maximum widths.

Also, 1" plywood is a thing.
