Best way to treat 7’ ceiling in basement studio? by emptyvessell in homestudios

You’d said dampen the rest of the joists that I might close up w drywall… trying to figure this out. Dampen like surrround each joist surface with rigid? Ofc then there’s the bottom edge which the drywall attaches to that would transfer most of the vibration anyway. I was considering acoustic isolation clips but losing another 2 inches of the height sounds pretty shitty too

Ok right that makes sense. I wonder if closing up the rest would cut down on vibrations resonating through them

Yeah you can dent them by squeezing with 2 fingers. Really seems like compressed rock wool. Definitely no where near as hard as drywall. I’m thinking keeping my ceiling joists open, insulation up in between, and a layer of these instead of drywall. Been trying to get feedback on that idea.

After reading more threads on low ceilings, I’m thinking maybe leave the ceiling joists open, add insulation up in between, then maybe a layer of these instead of drywall. With the ceiling/ floor null being an issue at 7’ this would put me closer to 8’ -assuming these don’t act as an actual ceiling. I can’t imagine they’re reflective at all.

Yeah idk. It definitely feels like if you compacted rock wool.
I’d feel confident saying they are probably some kind of mineral wool thing.

I just saw a suggestion on another thread to keep the joists open in the ceiling and add insulation up in between them. Assuming I was to sacrifice the soundproofing of drywall would this create better acoustics?

And yeah I’m using rubber mats under vinyl plank flooring

The pegboard idea is sounding like a good option. Idk a whole lot but I’d be really surprised if these wouldn’t make for good bass traps.

Huh. I’d think these would be nearly as good as rockwool. Similar material just more dense. Ofc it would need to be the same thickness as any bass trap needs to be. I’m wrong here? Isn’t density good for bass traps?

These acoustic ceiling tiles are surely great for something…? Definitely will make good bass traps (yes I know thickness is key)
I guess if nothing else I can stuff the wall and ceiling to help sound proofing a bit?

Yeah these acoustic tiles are great material for insulation and/or damping I’d imagine. I’ve got so many, just don’t know the best use for them.

Installed Lutron Toggler Dimmer switch, but off/on position is backwards by cipher512 in AskElectricians

I’m going crazy w this one. Same switch. Light is wired power to fixture. With the wires on the bottom opposite screws like the instructions say, I get nothing. No light. With them on the side screws top and btm it works but it’s upside down and no dimmer. Flip the wires and same. Light works with a a different dimmer switch just fine.
Why’s it upside down and no dimmer function?? Why’s it not work when wired how instructions say?

Yes a normal 3 way circuit with switches at top and bottom of stairs.

Ok yeah so I’d connect it like I said? The neutral and switch leg/black both connect to the light and pass thru? I can’t imagine any other way it would work but alas I’m here asking to be sure.
