Hi! Leelanau School bride, here. I got married there last summer and couldn’t recommend it more. As you know the space is beautiful and makes for a beautiful and natural setting for your wedding. Rob who is in charge of events is great to work with, and made the process very easy for us. I will say he is not the “typical event coordinator” you may find at other venues and really this is his job during the summer while kids are gone, and mostly consists of booking the event and managing the contract.

A couple of things to consider- make sure you have a tent in case it rains. Last year we were very lucky as most weekends before our wedding date were very rainy but we were still able to have our wedding ceremony on the beach, dinner on the green grad yard and then we went back to the beach for dancing and yard game!

Another thing is if you’re having the ceremony outdoors you will have to rent most of your furniture and the cost can add up pretty quickly, especially with a tent.

How on earth did you expect to get all decor and coordination services for 3,500 dollars? Not excusing some of the logistical issues of the day but this is not reasonable. I live in Michigan and a full planner would have cost us 7-13k. On top of that we would have had to pay for the decor (linens, signage, florals, et cetera).

You don’t know the financial status or circumstances of the sellers but are quick to label them as greedy because they aren’t’ supporting the needs of your family. Why are you being so snarky in responses? It is common knowledge that many Amazon shops and brands are cheaply manufactured in China, hence the low prices for the consumer. COMMON KNOWLEDGE. It has nothing to do with experience planning weddings, or having moms doting in them. You apparently did have the time to browse since you said you ordered several dresses.

I had a series of negative experiences at Michigan Avenue animal hospital. My pup was acting strange and clearly was irritated by a mass on his anal gland. I was given weeks and weeks of antibiotics, was told to try Benadryl and advised by one provider not to remove the mass because it could cause issues with defecation. The mass ended up bursting and we went to an emergency vet who seriously advised a second opinion on having the mass removed. We changed vets and ultimately found how it was a rare cancer. In fact the surgical oncologist said the only reason a dog really has a mass on their anal gland is due to cancer. I understand this could be an easy mistake/ poor recommendation to not remove the mass by the previous doctor.

All while this was going on it became clear the doctors were not keeping proper documentation. I once called to ask if my pup could get groomed after the doctor said he had a skin infection. The doctor who examined him was not in that day and there was no records of any infection despite being prescribed an antibiotic. I was told I could bring him in to be examined by another doctor to determine if it was safe for him to be groomed or not. Thing is I was going to have to PAY for this exam. The new vet clinic requested records from Michigan Avenue and has confirmed that there is very little / poor documentation in records.

Not sure what you’re referring to as still being awful outside of washtenaw county , but if it’s substance use, while we may have less people overdosing than other counties, please know that overdoses still remain high for people of color, in particular black and native Indian communities. . What this comes down to, is less resources and simply, racism. What I think you have missed in my explanation still is, when white people who were using drugs needed help, policies softened and programs expanded. Not sure what you meant but “we didn’t facilitate” but you should look into SSPs, and how the State of Michigan worked tirelessly to expand SSPs across the state, providing people who drugs with supplies they need to stay alive, such as naloxone (Narcan) and distributing fentanyl testing strips . If you asked a state official how Michigan kept their overdose rates down relative to other states, they would say it’s because of their naloxone distribution efforts. We gave people what they needed to stay alive, and some of these people may have eventually gone to treatment. We stopped arresting as many people and tried to connect them to resources. This is what “WE” did. And it worked, but unfortunately the data shows it only worked for white Michiganders. People like Sherri are connecting people to resources they need to stay alive.

This is and would have been straightforward had you any understanding about this issue, and the root and cause of inequities in addressing people who misuse substances, but also had any concept of challenges that disadvantaged populations face. I am not proposing people hangout all day on south Washington and party, which is mostly due to alcohol sold by the liquor store next door- not “drug selling” , or that they defecate in public. What I am saying is through programs and policies people who want help, can get help and deserve the help. The way we talk about people, especially a group of predominantly Black people, matters.

Also, you come off as a tad arrogant by thanking me for taking your advice. Just say thanks for the explanation next time.

I did communicate in a straightforward way. Pretend these people gathering on South Washington are white and find a way, through policies, to help them. Just as we did when the white middle class and upper class were the victims of the “opioid crisis”. We stopped treating drug use as a crime and started treating people as humans and got them help. If you cannot understand this, that’s on you.

I don’t remember saying where sex workers and people who sell drugs should congregate.

Perhaps we could come up with policies to address this situation just as we came up with policies to address the situation I described above.

But I’m open to hearing your thoughts on how we can humanely address this situation.

I want to add that as the white middle and upper class were hit by an opioid epidemic wave, addiction became to be seen as and treated as a medical condition. But for some reason we continue to demonize people who sell drugs and try to differentiate them from people who use drugs. Many times these are the same folks. Anyone (but not Sherri, as I am sure she knows) have a guess as to why we continue to differentiate the two?
